Telangana to introduce flexible undergraduate curriculum in degree colleges under new University Grants Commission rules
Hyderabad: Thanks to the new rules of the University Grants Commission (UGC), students opting for undergraduate courses in degree colleges in Telangana are likely to get more flexibility this year as the state is considering adopting some of the best practices in the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, such as multiple entry and exit options. The Chairman of the Telangana Council of Higher Education (TGCHE), V Balakista Reddy, said that the revised curriculum will incorporate several key UGC frameworks. "This includes the National Credit Framework (NCrF), apprenticeship-linked degree programmes, short-term skill modules, multiple exit and entry options, and digital pedagogy," he added. "We started the revision of the syllabus two months ago. This forward-thinking exercise underscores our commitment to modern education in the 21st century through digital learning, skill enhancement, and holistic development," said Reddy, adding that the TGCHE is in line with the UGC's vision for curriculum modernisation. The TGCHE has taken the lead in revising UG courses to integrate emerging trends in skill development, multidisciplinary learning, and experiential education, as outlined in the NEP 2020. "Our efforts are focused on reducing content overload while embedding critical thinking, creativity, and industry-relevant competencies," he said. "This initiative aims to bridge the gap between academia and dynamic societal needs, ensuring students are future-ready." Reddy added that the ongoing discussion with vice-chancellors, academia, industry partners, students, and various committees has enabled TGCHE to undertake this initiative for the advancement of higher education. He added that TGCHE aims to elevate higher education standards in Telangana to be on par with global standards. Admissions into undergraduate courses in degree colleges will be through Degree Online Services, Telangana (DOST), the notification for which will be released on Friday.
