Nissan Reimagines the MICRA

Nissan has unveiled the sixth-generation MICRA, a fully electric model set to re-enter the European B-segment in 2025. This latest incarnation marks a transformative moment for the long-standing compact car, now offering fully connected, zero-emission mobility while retaining the stylish, accessible personality that made it a mainstay for over four decades. Developed at Nissan Design Europe (NDE) in London, the new MICRA debuts with a striking and assertive exterior inspired by crossover cues. It blends premium finishes with rugged details, including pronounced wheel arches and SUV-like proportions, delivering a confident stance on the road. All variants will be equipped with 18-inch wheels, with a choice of distinct alloy designs depending on the model grade. Lighting plays a central role in the MICRA's bold visual identity. Protruding headlamps perform an animated 'welcome' and 'farewell' light display on unlocking and locking. The rear features LED taillights with elegant, circular patterns, reinforcing the model's modern yet playful aesthetic. Buyers will be able to personalise their vehicles with a selection of 14 colour combinations, including two-tone options featuring black or grey roofs. Inside, the MICRA emphasises minimalism and sophistication. A blend of simple design and subtle nods to Japanese heritage – including a discreet Mount Fuji silhouette in the front storage area- creates a sense of understated elegance. A three-spoke steering wheel fronts a 10.1-inch digital instrument display, while an equally sized touchscreen stretches across the dashboard to manage infotainment and vehicle settings. Customers can choose between three interior trim styles: Modern, Audacious, and Chill. Despite its compact dimensions – just under 4 metres long and less than 1.8 metres wide – the MICRA offers generous space and usability. A long wheelbase enhances interior comfort and handling, while boot space stands at 326 litres, outperforming many rivals in its class. The MICRA will be offered exclusively as a five-door model for simplicity and practicality. For the first time, the MICRA will be available solely as an electric vehicle. Two battery configurations will be offered: a 40kWh pack delivering a 308km range and a more capable 52kWh version with up to 408km, based on real-world testing. Both variants offer brisk acceleration and instant torque, with peak outputs of 120hp and 148hp, respectively. Fast-charging capabilities enhance the MICRA's practicality. The 52kWh version supports 100kW DC charging, enabling a 15% to 80% charge in approximately 30 minutes. The 40kWh variant supports 80kW charging. To optimise efficiency, both configurations come equipped with a heat pump and battery thermal management systems. Vehicle-to-Load (V2L) functionality is also included, allowing users to power external electronic devices using the car's battery. Performance has been engineered with precision to suit both city driving and spirited weekend escapes. The MICRA's low centre of gravity – courtesy of its battery placement within the new AmpR shared EV platform – supports its dynamic road behaviour. Suspension design includes independent front struts and a rear multi-link system more commonly found in premium segments, resulting in class-leading handling and ride comfort. With a starting weight of just 1,400kg (1,524kg for the 52kWh variant), the MICRA is notably lighter than many competitors, contributing to its agile and responsive driving character. Technology integration is central to the MICRA's user experience. Google built-in services form the core of the NissanConnect infotainment system, which provides seamless integration between the driver's smartphone and vehicle interface. The NissanConnect app extends connectivity off-board, enabling users to check battery status, find the car's location, review charging history, and remotely manage cabin temperature and charging routines. On the safety front, the MICRA is equipped with the latest driver assistance systems, including Nissan's ProPILOT assist for enhanced highway driving and a wide range of active safety features aimed at protecting occupants and reducing driver workload. Sales for the sixth-generation MICRA will commence in Europe later in 2025, as Nissan reintroduces one of its most iconic models to a new era of electric urban mobility.

Nissan has taken the wraps off the Micra EV, the electrified version of its popular hatchback. The electric version of the Nissan Micra has been designed at Nissan's Design Europe (NDE) in London and is likely to be up for sale in Europe first and later in other countries. The Nissan Micra EV is based on the brand's Ampr Small platform, and it gets two battery pack options- a 40 kWh or a 52 kWh battery. The 40 kWh battery is said to deliver 120 hp, while the bigger battery pack is capable of churning out 147 hp. The Nissan Micra EV claims to have a "friendly face" with distinctive headlights, semi-circular DRLs, giving an impression of "raised eyebrows". The brand highlights that the Micra EV will get six color options, two roof options, and 14 colour options. The ice-cream scoop feature line, prominent wheel arches with black panel inserts, and 18-inch wheels are the other exterior highlights of the Nissan Micra EV. Nissan claims that the new Micra might seem to be compact from the outside but ensures enough space on the inside. It has a trunk space of 300 liters and split folding rear seats. The other interior feature in the Nissan Micra EV includes 48-color ambient lighting, voice control Google assist for music control, change car settings, activate smart home devices, and more. The Harmon Kardon audio system is claimed to enhance the music experience.

Checking without damaging: IIT-Madras works on advanced tech for disruptive material testing

From sensors detecting leaks in pipelines, tanks, bridges and dams without tearing those down to robots for ending manual scavenging -- IIT-Madras has established itself as a global centre of excellence for developing disruptive material testing technology. "Non Destructive Evaluation" (NDE) is the broad name given to the field of testing and analysis used by industry to characterise components or structures for indicators of performance degradation, without causing damage to the original part. The "NDE 5.0 - Industrial Assets and Process Management CoE (CNDE)" at IIT-Madras is developing advanced inspection solutions using X-rays, infrared thermography, lasers, ultrasonics, microwave, terahertz and eddy currents, leveraging industry tools in robotics, drones, AI, Machine Learning, virtual reality, distributed ledgers, hyperspectral imaging and quantum computing. Krishnan Balasubramanian, Chair Professor, IIT-Madras, told PTI that the centre of excellence has a team of internationally acclaimed professors and researchers who have executed projects with a cumulative value over Rs 200 crore, attracted industry funding in excess of Rs 50 crore and CSR funding of Rs 10 crore for socially-relevant projects. "The research undertaken by this team has already led to 15 IIT Madras-incubated startups with a combined valuation in excess of Rs 2,000 crore. The vision is to carry out cutting-edge research on asset integrity platforms for society and industry validated and accepted as benchmarks that can be commercialised worldwide," he said. Balasubramanian also underlined that technologies from this CoE impact the efficiency of industry operations and increase the availability and safety of industrial and infrastructural assets. "The key objectives of this CoE include impacting industries by helping them reduce operating costs by 40 per cent, decrease failure risk, improve availability and uptime by 20 per cent and extend as well as maximise asset life safety," he added. The professor explained that India has a lot of national assets and physical infrastructure that need to be constantly monitored. "The country has the second-longest road network in the world (6 million km) and the Indian Railways is one of the largest rail networks in the world under one management. The ports handle 95 per cent of its international trade in and out of India. "The country is currently the fourth largest consumer of energy globally after the US, China and Russia and, hence, has over 40,000 km of cross-country pipelines and underground oil reserve storage facilities," he said. The CoE's target is to be among the top five research centres globally in this field by 2026, incubate at least 20 startups that could create 2,000 tech jobs and establish at least two industry consortia to ensure the research translates to industry impact in India and abroad. Tata Steel, Boeing, DRDO, ONGC, Gail, Shell and Indian Oil Corporation are among the major industry stakeholders that IIT-Madras has partnered with in multiple critical sectors. Prabhu Rajgopal, the deputy head of the Centre of Excellence (CoE) said the facility is working to develop deep research-based non-destructive technologies for improved performance, enhanced safety and increased life for industrial applications and relevant technologies for societal well-being. "We are leveraging industry tools to create disruptive solutions that enhance the quality of inspection data for end-users with effective decision plan strategies. Today, CNDE startups are globally recognized pioneers in the areas of marine and submerged asset integrity monitoring and pipeline inspections," he told PTI. "The extraordinary dual-use potential of our research is demonstrated by solutions such as the HomoSEP robot for eliminating manual scavenging or a start-up with AI automation for the underserved healthcare sector. These are technologies that we first developed and demonstrated in the industrial context," he added. For the ongoing projects, the centre is collaborating with researchers from top global institutions such as NTU Singapore; University of Nairobi, Dedan Kimathi University and Riara University Kenya; Kenia National Innovation Agency (KeNIA); University of Dar-es-Salam Tanzania; UNDP, Tanzania; Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft, Germany; Alternative Energies and Atomic Energy Commission, France. It has also joined forces with Airbus; University of Warwick, UK; University College London, UK; Ecole de technologie superieure, Canada; and Michigan State University, USA.
