"Society Shaken Only When...": Javed Akhtar On Honeymoon, Drum Murder Cases

New Delhi: Lyricist and scriptwriter Javed Akhtar has questioned where society's outrage was when women were set on fire, assaulted by their husbands and tortured by their in-laws, alluding to recent cases of women killing their husbands including the widely reported honeymoon murder case in Meghalaya. Mr Akhtar, whose strong views on social and political issues often make headlines, said he has "mixed emotions" on two of the cases involving the murder of men by their wives - one in Uttar Pradesh's Meerut whose body was cut up and stuffed in a drum, and the other from Indore who was killed by his wife during their honeymoon in Meghalaya. "Women have been set on fire. If they are not set on fire, their lives in their in-laws' homes are worse than death as they get beaten up every day. But why is society not outraged by all these? What a shameless society," Mr Akhtar said at NDTV Creators Manch. "Two women are accused of murder and society is shocked. But where was the shock for years when women were tortured by men and is still happening even today?" To a question by NDTV on the honeymoon murder case that happened soon after the couple's wedding, Mr Akhtar said the woman committed a crime, but more information needs to be asked. "What she did was very wrong. But if she did it soon after their wedding, find out whether the wedding was forced on her against her wish. It would be easy to find out," Mr Akhtar said, referring to Indore resident Sonam who hired three hitmen and killed her husband Raja Raghuvanshi during their honeymoon in Meghalaya. "Is it easy for a woman from a small city in Hindustan to tell her mother and father that she will not get married? Can she say that?" he said. "I am not justifying murdering anyone, including husbands," he said in a lighter vein, which drew laughter from the audience. "There was a time when many daughters-in-law were killed in pressure cooker explosions. Even the pressure cooker would recognise who is a daughter-in-law. The mother-in-law or her daughter never died," Mr Akhtar added, alluding to daughters-in-law as kitchen workers who face an occupational hazard. #NDTVCreatorsManch | "Women are burnt alive every day. Poet Kumar Vishwas On Diljit Dosanjh's Sardaar Ji 3: " Yeh Jo Ahankar Ho Gaya Hain Na Stars Ko Ki..."

New Delhi: Hindi Poet, lecturer, and former politician Kumar Vishwas was recently a guest on NDTV Creators Manch. He shared his thoughts on the Hania Aamir- Sardaar Ji 3 row. Amid the ongoing backlash that Diljit Dosanjh has received for starring alongside a Pakistani actress in light of the heightened tensions between India and Pakistan following the Pahalgam terror attack on April 22, 2025, Kumar Vishwas reacts to whether boycotting the film is justified. He says, " Mera kehna yeh hai, mein toh mohabbat ki baat karu, aur aap waha kalakaar hoke nafrat ki baat kare mere mulk, fauji, aur sarkaar ke liye kare. Toh phir aisi aman ki asha ka kabutar aap mere darwaaze pe na bheje." #NDTVCreatorsManch | Poet Kumar Vishwas reacts to #SardaarJi3 row @DrKumarVishwas @awasthis — NDTV (@ndtv) June 27, 2025 He adds, " Aur yeh jo ahankar ho gaya hain na stars ko, ki mera kya hai? Mein toh gaa dunga. Yeh bohut galat baat hai, kiske banaye gaye ho tum? Meri responsibility yeh jo log ticket deke Kumar Vishwas ko dekhne aaye hai, unke prati hain. Inke ghar o mein toh gola aake padh raha hain, inka sipahi toh tirange mein lapet ke aa rahe hain. Aur uski mazaak bana ne waale ladki ke saath aap bol rahe hai mein uske saath film bana lunga, gaana bana lunga? Zaroor gaunga huzoor, gaana likhunga bhi aapke liye. Par aap bhi boliye yeh jung bekar hain kyunki aap ko bhi pata hain shuru kaun karta hai aur khatam kaun karta hain." What We Know So Far Diljit Dosanjh has been in the eye of storm eversince the trailer drop of Sardaar Ji 3 where the audience saw a glimpse of Pakistani actress Hania Aamir. The Internet has reacted strongly to Diljit Dosanjh's collaboration with Pakistani star Hania Aamir, especially after the Pahalgam terror attack earlier this year. The Federation of Western India Cine Employees (FWICE) urged the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) to deny certification to the film as the movie's cast members also included Pakistani actors Hania Aamir, Nasir Chinyoti, Daniel Khawar and Saleem Albela. As a result, the makers decided to skip the film's theatrical release in India. Sardaar Ji 3 has released overseas today.

Javed Akhtar On Diljit Dosanjh's Sardaar Ji 3: "Ban Karoge Toh Paisa Hindustani Ka Doobega, Pakistani Ka Nahi"

New Delhi: Indian screenwriter, lyricist, and poet Javed Akhtar recently in conversation with NDTV Creators Manch, addressed the ongoing Diljit Dosanjh controversy over his Punjabi film Sardaar Ji 3, featuring Pakistani actor Hania Aamir. He shared his thoughts on the ongoing situation and whether it is fair for the singer-actor. When asked about Diljit Dosanjh starring alongside Pakistani actress Hania Aamir in Sardaar Ji 3, and the backlash he received, Javed Akhtar said that he wasn't aware when the movie was shot. On being told that the makers say it was shot before the Pahalgam attack earlier this year, he said, " Ab kya karein bechara. The movie was shot earlier. Usko pata toh nahi tha ki aisa hoga. Iss mein Pakistani aadmi ka paisa toh nahi doobega, Hindustani ka paisa doobega. Toh phir kya faayda?" He adds, " Usko pehle pata hota yeh hone wala hain, toh woh thodi na leta Pakistani actress. I think the government and the censor board should look at the situation with a little sympathy. And say that don't do this again, but since you made this film before, then release it. But it should not happen again." The Sardaar Ji 3 Controversy Diljit Dosanjh's Punjabi film Sardaar Ji 3 has been released worldwide in theatres today, except in India. Even A Common Man In Karachi Knows Where Dawood Ibrahim Lives: Ex-Diplomat To NDTV

Every resident of Karachi is familiar with fugitive gangster Dawood Ibrahim's whereabouts in the Pakistani city, former Indian diplomat Ruchi Ghanashyam has said. "Even a common man knows about Dawood Ibrahim's whereabouts in Karachi. Our driver once told us that one can first find (former Pakistan Prime Minister) Benazir Bhutto's house and if you go further down, there is Dawood Ibrahim's house," Ms Ghanashyam, who was the first Indian woman diplomat to be posted in Islamabad, said at the NDTV Creators Manch. "But Dawood does not have just one house in Karachi, he has several. I was a bit surprised but not anymore. It's in Pakistan's nature to hide the truth. Everyone knows this but no one will make an official comment," she added. Dawood, who heads a vast and multifaceted illegal business empire, emerged as India's most wanted men after the 1993 Mumbai bombings in which 257 people were killed and 700 were injured. Besides this, Dawood has been accused of masterminding other terror attacks and also faces multiple charges of money laundering and extortion. India and the US have also accused him of financing terror groups, including Al Qaeda and Lashkar-e-Taiba. India has long held that there is proof that Dawood has been living in Pakistan's largest city and financial capital - an assertion also confirmed by the United Nations. Pakistan, which had also denied Osama Bin Laden's presence in the country, has refuted the charge. In 2020, however, the Pakistan government inadvertently mentioned Dawood's presence in Karachi. In a notification in August that year, it announced sanctions on key figures of terror outfits such as 26/11 Mumbai attack mastermind and Jamaat-ud-Dawa (JuD) chief Hafiz Saeed, Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM) chief Masood Azhar, and Dawood. It claimed Dawood Ibrahim lives in "White House, Near Saudi Mosque, Clifton" in Karachi, and listed his other properties as "House Nu 37 - 30th Street - defence, Housing Authority, Karachi" and "Palatial bungalow in the hilly area of Noorabad in Karachi". Islamabad, later, distanced itself from the addresses, saying it was not the source of the information. "When Pakistan wanted to come out of the FATF (Financial Action Task Force)'s grey list, then this matter (Dawood's whereabouts) came to light. His addresses were mentioned in the FATF's list. Whenever talks are held between India and Pakistan, Pakistan never officially acknowledges anything," Ms Ghanashyam said.
