Following ship capsize, 29 cargo containers washed ashore in Kollam
T'puram: As many as 29 cargo containers from MSC ELSA 3 were washed ashore at several places of Kollam coast on Monday.
Kollam collector N Devidasan said necessary measures were taken to shift them to Kollam port using tug boats.
"From the port, they will be shipped to the company after completing necessary procedures.
As of now, we are concerned about moving them to the port," said Devidasan.
Considering possible leakage of hazardous chemicals from the containers, police cordoned off the localities. However, the police had to seek local fishermen's help to tie the containers using ropes to the shore in the turbulent sea.
The containers were washed ashore near Parimanam Temple and a hotel bar, IRE Guest House near Chavara, St John De Britto's Latin Catholic Church near Sakthikulangara and Cheriyazheekkal and Pandarathoppe near Karunagappally.
Fourteen of the 29 containers were washed ashore near Sakthikulangara.
Tea powder covered the surface of the sea near some containers while textiles and huge quantities of thermocol were also washed ashore. A life-rescue boat was also washed ashore along with the containers. All the containers remained open.
Officials from the customs, revenue, fire force and police departments visited the spots and did necessary inspections.
