NEET UG Result 2025: Madras High Court dismisses petitions seeking re-exam over power outage
Decks have been cleared for the declaration of results of NEET (UG) 2025 examination with the Madras high court on Friday dismissing a batch of petitions, which sought to restrain the National Testing Agency (NTA) from declaring the results. In their petitions, S Sai Priya and 15 other students also sought a direction to the NTA to conduct re-examination for candidates, who had experienced power outages at four centres in Chennai, where they appeared for the examination. Dismissing the petitions, Justice C Kumarappan said, 'In the instant cases, I do not find any mala fides on the part of the respondents. Furthermore, all over India, there were about 22 lakhs students have participated in the NEET (UG) 2025 examination.' Against this background, if any re-examination is permitted on trivial grounds, the same would seriously affect the level playing field of more than two million candidates. Hence, the court does not find any merit in these writ petitions. In an interim order, a vacation judge had on May 17 restrained NTA from releasing the results of NEET-2025 due to alleged difficulties faced by a group of students because of power outage at four examination centres. In his order, Justice Kumarappan said 'If we look at the contention of the petitioners, the main ground urged by them is that on account of power outage, there was poor light in the Centres, which caused a distracting environment, and hampered the candidates' ability to concentrate and to perform at their best'. It was pertinent to mention here that the power outage happened due to sudden rain and storm. As rightly contended by the Additional Solicitor General, the examination was conducted during day time between 2 pm to 5 pm, where there was a natural ambient light, the judge added. When the authority (NTA), after field verification and with the scientific method, had arrived at a reasonable conclusion that there are no grounds for re-examination, the same needs to be accepted, unless the said report is tainted with mala fides', the judge added.

Power outage: No need for NEET re-exam, NTA tells HC
Chennai: There is no need to conduct re-examination for NEET-2025, as the power outage on May 4 at a Chennai exam centre did not cause any significant disruptions, National Testing Agency ( NTA ) told Madras high court on Tuesday. An inquiry revealed that the exam was not affected, and most students answered majority of the questions. Therefore, there is no need to conduct a re-exam, additional solicitor-general A R L Sundaresan said. On May 17, a vacation judge of the court passed an interim order restraining the NTA from releasing the results of NEET-2025 due to alleged difficulties faced by a group of students because of a power cut at an examination center in Avadi. The court passed the order on a plea moved by 13 students highlighting the issue. On Tuesday, when the plea came up for hearing before Justice C Kumarappan, counsel for the students requested the court to direct the NTA to produce CCTV footage of the exam center to prove whether there was proper lighting during the exam. Recording the submissions, the judge adjourned the plea to June 6 for passing orders. According to petitioners, at the Shri Kendriya Vidyalaya CRPF centre in Avadi, 464 students were issued admit cards to appear for the exam. The exam began at 2 pm as scheduled. However, due to heavy rain, a power outage occurred from 3 pm to 4.15 pm. No backup power facilities were arranged at the centre. As a result, students had to write the exam in poor lighting conditions, they said. Additionally, rainwater entered the exam hall, and students were asked to shift to another location, causing further disruption. Due to these difficulties, students were unable to fully demonstrate their abilities. A request made to exam authorities to allot additional time was also denied, the petitioners said.

Madras HC stays NEET-2025 results over power cut row
Representative photo CHENNAI: Madras HC on Friday stayed declaration of NEET-2025 results after hearing 13 candidates' pleas claiming that power outage at Avadi examination centre near Chennai had affected them. Justice V Lakshminarayanan issued the interim order barring National Testing Agency (NTA) from releasing the results. He also issued a notice to NTA directing it to submit its response by June 2. As per the candidates, 464 students wrote their exam at the Avadi centre between 2pm and 5pm on May 4. Heavy rain started around that time and power remained cut off from 3pm to 4.15pm. No power backup facility was arranged due to which the students had to write the exam under poor lighting conditions. Additionally, rainwater entered the exam hall, and students were asked to shift to another location, causing further disruptions. The candidates requested extra time to complete their exam but it was denied, their counsel told the court. Repeated requests for a re-examination were also not entertained. This violates students' fundamental right under Article 21 of the Constitution, they said.
