What we can learn about the 2026 Oscars from the 2025 Cannes Film Festival

What we can learn about the 2026 Oscars from the 2025 Cannes Film Festival The 2025 Cannes Film Festival might be far removed from the 2026 Academy Awards... far, far removed. However, as early as it is to think about what the 2026 Oscars will look like, Cannes has become a pretty vital bellwether for where the eventual Oscar season goes. The 2024 Palme d'Or winner Anora eventually won Best Picture this past March after such a commanding Cannes debut, and the same went for 2019's Parasite. The only film to win the Palme d'Or since Parasite to miss the Best Picture field was 2021's Titane, with 2022's Triangle of Sadness and 2023's Anatomy of a Fall both making it to the nomination field. Sure, you could attribute that to the fact that all of those films came from the same distributor in NEON, but you could also underscore the importance of what Cannes means to the more international Academy voting body. That means 2025 Palme d'Or winner It Was Just an Accident from beloved Iranian New Wave auteur Jafar Panahi should be considered a real contender for Best Picture, as Panahi's incredibly brave, storied career finally culminating in real Oscar attention would be yet another awesome wave of international influence on the Academy's decisions. Joachim Trier's Grand Prix-winning Sentimental Value also seems like a pretty clear Oscar contender, as Trier's 2021 film The Worst Person in the World made it into the Best Original Screenplay field and his new film perhaps got the strongest cumulative reviews of any Cannes competition title. A family drama set against the world of filmmaking that stars Renate Reinsve, Stellan Skarsgård, Elle Fanning and Cory Michael Smith sounds right up the new Academy's alley, so expect a lot from that one down the road. NEON has both, and the distributor has been a real force in the Oscar campaign cycle since 2017's I, Tonya. Both should be considered important topics of discussion going into next year's Academy Awards. Other Cannes films to watch in 2025 based on the buzz: Lynne Ramsay's Die, My Love, which could launch Jennifer Lawrence into the Best Actress race, Richard Linklater's French New Wave tribute Nouvelle Vague about the making of Breathless, Kleber Mendonça Filho's Brazilian political thriller The Secret Agent (particularly for Cannes Best Actor winner Wagner Moura), Mascha Schilinski's German drama Sound of Falling and Spike Lee's Akira Kurosawa reimagining Highest 2 Lowest with Denzel Washington. With Ryan Coogler's massive horror hit Sinners the only real Oscar contender to emerge from the 2025 film calendar year so far, look to France to help further fill out the very unfinished puzzle of how the 2026 Oscars might shape up next winter.

Cannes Winners: Palme D'Or Goes To Jafar Panahi's ‘It Was Just An Accident'; Grand Prize Is Joachim Trier's ‘Sentimental Value'; ‘The Secret Agent' Scores For Wagner Moura & Kleber Mendonça Filho

UPDATE: In a triumphant in-person return to the Cannes Film Festival, 22 years after he last attended (though some of his movies have screened in the intervening time), Iranian filmmaker Jafar Panahi was awarded the Palme d'Or this evening for It Was Just an Accident. An emotional Panahi, who has spent most of his filmmaking career in the crosshairs of Iran's authoritarian Islamic Republic government — including more than a decade of multiple detentions, prison sentences, house arrests and filmmaking and travel bans — implored from the Lumière stage: 'Let's put all the problems, all the differences aside; the most important thing right now is our country and our country's freedom.' More from Deadline 'Homebound' Cast & Director Neeraj Ghaywan Talk Martin Scorsese's Notes, Gujarati Folk Singing & Artistic Vocations - Cannes Studio NEON Shines Brightly With Six For Six Palme d'Or Winners After Jafar Panahi's 'It Was Just An Accident' Neon Taking North American Rights To Natalie Portman Cannes Animation 'Arco' To cheers, he continued, 'Let's reach that moment together when no one dares to tell us what we should completely include, what we should say, what we shouldn't do… Cinema is a society. No one has the right to tell us what you should do, what you shouldn't do.' On a six-year Palme streak, Neon acquired It Was Just an Accident earlier this week, and also has Grand Prize winner Sentimental Value from Joachim Trier who dedicated his win to his grandfather. Brazil also had a great night with prizes for Wagner Moura as Best Actor in Kleber Mendonça Filho' The Secret Agent, which also scooped Best Director. PREVIOUS, 9:36am PT: It's the final day here at the Cannes Film Festival with prizes including the Palme d'Or due to be handed out across the next hour (scroll down for the list of laureates as we update live) Among those to arrive on the red carpet this evening were Sentimental Value star Elle Fanning, Resurrection director Bi Gan and cast, Sirat director Oliver Laxe and Two Prosecutors director Sergei Loznitsa. This final day got off to quite the bizarre start when, at about 10am local time, a mass power outage affected the region, cutting off electricity and greatly blocking cell service. The festival, however, was well prepared for such an odd scenario, pivoting to an independent power supply to keep the Palais juiced so that all scheduled events and screenings, including this Closing Ceremony, could proceed as planned. In the end, the lights came back on across town at about 3:30pm here — and the city heaved an audible sigh of relief. Otherwise, the past 10 days have gone down a treat, with the lineup of films being called the strongest in many years. The Competition films were well-reviewed except for an outlier or two, while outside of the Competition, there were such glossy events as the premiere of Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning with Tom Cruise bringing the mega-star wattage. As ever, Deadline timed the ovations inside the Palais, including one that saw the audience erupt with 19 minutes of praise. Although the length of applause is not always indicative of awards, that movie, Joachim Trier's Sentimental Value, is the one that Deadline's critics are tipping as the likely Palme d'Or winner. Other movies singled out by our critics include Jafar Panahi's It Was Just an Accident, Richard Linklater's Nouvelle Vague, Bi Gan's Resurrection, Mascha Schilinski's The Sound of Falling and Sergei Loznitza's Two Prosecutors. For all of their picks, see here. The jury is presided over by Juliette Binoche this year, and while no one really ever knows which way the panel will swing, we'll know more in just a little while. NEON Shines Brightly With Six For Six Palme d'Or Winners After Jafar Panahi's ‘It Was Just An Accident'

Call them a barometer, clairvoyant, or just god damn shrewd when it comes to choosing award-winning movies, but NEON has just scored its sixth Cannes Palme d'Or in a row with It Was Just an Accident. Deadline's Andreas Wiseman first reported two days ago that NEON scooped up North American rights to the movie. More from Deadline Cannes Film Festival Winners Announced: Palme D'Or Goes To Jafar Panahi's 'It Was Just An Accident' Grand Prize To 'Sentimental Value'; 'The Secret Agent's Wagner Moura Best Actor, Kleber Mendonça Filho Best Director - Updating Live Neon Taking North American Rights To Natalie Portman Cannes Animation 'Arco' 'Imago' Director Déni Oumar Pitsaev On Winning Two Prizes In Cannes: "I Didn't Expect It At All" This comes after last year's Cannes top prize winner Anora, Justine Triet's 2023 title Anatomy of a Fall, 2022's Triangle of Sadness, 2021's Titane and 2019's Parasite. Out of that bunch, Anora and Parasite went on to win Best Picture at the Oscars, which is whole other level of award campaigning genius on behalf of the Tom Quinn run distribution label. It Was Just an Accident blurb reads 'What begins as a minor accident sets in motion a series of escalating consequences.' The pic was one of the best-reviewed movies at the festival, deals in a fictional way with past wrongfully incarcerated working-class people seeking revenge against the guard who tortured and berated them. Interesting, NEON had all bases covered in regards to who might spring up as a Palme d'Or winner with their other acquisitions coming up with alotta gold tonight. Last year, Deadline exclusively reported that NEON took domestic on Joachim Trier's Sentimental Value which was buzzed to take the top prize as well, but settled with the Grand Prix. NEON's Un Poeta from Simon Mesa Soto won the Jury Prize. In addition, NEON took Brazil's buzzy 1977 political thriller The Secret Agent earlier this week, that Kleber Mendonca Filho directed movie walking away with Best Director tonight as well as Best Actor for Wagner Moura. No theatrical release dates have been set yet for these titles by NEON. October has been a prized timeframe for the distributor to launch Cannes titles, read, that's when Anora, Parasite and Triangle of Sadness opened.
