Miami Twp Police, NHTSA team up to curb distracted driving

DAYTON, Ohio (WDTN) – The Miami Township Police Department and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration have partnered to encourage road safety this April. The joint effort will aim to reduce distracted driving in the Miami Valley. Named 'Put the Phone Away or Pay,' the campaign is being funded by an NHTSA Ohio Safety Grant. OSHP: What you can and can't do under Ohio's new distracted driving law Approximately 3,300 people were killed and nearly 290,000 injured by distracted driving in 2022, according to NHTSA. 'Distracted driving is a leading cause of vehicle crashes on our nation's roads and most of this distraction can be attributed to cell phone use,' said Acting Chief James McCarty. 'People who use their phones while driving put themselves and others at risk. It is illegal to text and drive, so our officers will be issuing tickets if they stop you.' Both the NHTSA and Miami Township Police gave advice on ways to prevent yourself from being a distracted driver. Do not use your phone while driving. To prevent feeding the habit, set your phone to the 'Do Not Disturb' feature or silent notifications. Place it in the glove box until you reach your destination. If you are driving and absolutely must send a text, pull over and park your car before doing so. Appoint a passenger as the 'designated texter' and give them your phone to so they can respond to calls and texts for you. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved.
