Man crushed to death by gate while leaving Perth business

A man was crushed to death by a gate while trying to leave a Welshpool business on the weekend. The incident occurred on Saturday night when a 65-year-old man left a building at the corner of Welshpool Road and Ewing Street. The West Australian was told that as the man went to leave the building, a gate that he had attempted to close fell on him. It's believed the man's family lost contact with him before they discovered his body pinned underneath the gate. They called St John WA paramedics, firefighters and police to the business from 8.20pm. But despite the efforts of the first responders, the man died at the scene. The man died at the scene. It is understood the building previously housed an ice manufacturing business, but was not in use at the time of the incident. The building had signage which read: 'Welshpool Coolrooms and Kalamunda Ice Works'. A 3m-long metal gate was laid on the ground near an entrance to the building on Ewing Street. A man who visited the property on Sunday morning said the building was due to be demolished on Tuesday. He said he knew the man who died, and last saw him at the address on Saturday afternoon. The property was going to be used as a car dealership after the demolition, the man said. It is unknown what the man was doing at the time of the incident. Two WorkSafe investigators were at the scene on Sunday morning. Several cars were scattered throughout the property, which was partially fenced off on one side. Police said a report into his death will be prepared for the coroner.
