Police warn about new DMV text message scam: What is brushing scam? What you need to know

Officials are warning drivers and cellphone users about new text message scams claiming to be from the Department of Motor Vehicles — threatening 'final notice' to target victims — and other brushing, spoofing and smishing scams to look out for. The latest DMV text scam threatens to suspend vehicle registration and driving privileges if fines aren't paid immediately by clicking on the fake link. It has been reported across several states such as Illinois, Pennsylvania, Florida, New Jersey, Georgia, New York and more. The DMV scam is the latest amid a slew of smishing text activity in the past year aimed at getting unsuspecting victims to click on malicious links to pay outstanding fines, reply "Y" to the messages, copy the links into your browser or confirm personal information, among other methods. "The New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission (NJMVC) has received multiple reports of a recent phishing scam impersonating the DMV for Enforcement Penalties," the NJMVC said on social media on May 29. "These messages are designed to steal your personal and financial information." 'Phishing scams are designed to create a sense of panic, catching the receiver off guard and causing them to react before thinking,' warned DMV Director Amy Anthony. 'I urge everyone to think before you click on links of any kind especially those requesting money, payment, personal information, credit card details, social security number, or anything else that could be used negatively.' Here's what you need to know to avoid getting ripped off. If you receive a text message from a DMV or other state agency, demanding money, the Federal Trade Commission suggests the following: Report the text to the Federal Trade Commission at and/or file a compliant with the FBI's Internet Crime Compliant Center at Do not respond to the text or click any links. State DMVs would not ask for your information or money by text. If you think the message might be real, contact your state's DMV using a trusted phone number or website. Copy the text message and forward it to 7726 (SPAM). This will help your wireless provider spot and block similar messages. Report the text on the messaging app you use. Look for the option to report junk or spam. According to the FBI, the definition of smishing is a social engineering attack using fake text messages to trick people into downloading malware, sharing sensitive information or sending money to cybercriminals. "Smishing" combines "SMS"—or "short message service," and "phishing." "Phishing" generally pertains to attacks on the internet, email, or websites. Spoofing is when someone disguises an email address, sender name, phone number, or website URL — often just by just changing one letter, or a symbol, or a number — to convince you that you are interacting with a trusted source, but makes it seem otherwise familiar to the recipient. Brushing scams are a type of online fraud where sellers send unsolicited packages to individuals, although they never actually placed the order, such as through Amazon or AliExpress. Once the item is delivered, the fraudster will write a fake positive review about the product to help the seller's ratings rise, according to Mcafee. This scam also indicates that your personal information may have been compromised. New Jersey launching Real ID Tuesdays to add appointments past federal deadline

New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission centers will launch "Real ID Tuesdays" to offer more appointments after the upcoming federal deadline. About 5,200 Real ID appointments will be made available every other Tuesday, starting on May 20. Those appointments will be made available through NJMVC's appointment scheduler Monday morning. The NJMVC previously launched "Real ID Thursdays" in an effort to make more Real ID appointments available in the months leading up to the deadline. Emergency appointments are also available for those who urgently need a Real ID. According to a CBS News analysis from April 7-18, just 17% of New Jerseyans have gotten a Real ID – the lowest compliance rate in the United States. Real ID deadline is Wednesday Starting Wednesday, May 7, travelers will need either a Real ID or a U.S. passport to go through airport security for domestic flights or to get into a government building. To get a Real ID at a NJMVC Licensing Center, you will need to bring two proof of address documents, your Social Security Number and several other documents to prove your identity. For a list of what to bring, visit the NJMVC's website. Anyone whose license expires in the next three months can also upgrade to a Real ID at a license renewal appointment.

NJMVC to add more than 5000 REAL ID appointments

NEW JERSEY (PIX11) — With the new REAL ID air travel guidelines set to go into effect in less than a week, the New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission (NJMVC) is making it easier for residents to get REAL ID ready. Starting May 20, the NJMVC will add 5,200 REAL ID appointments every other Tuesday going forward. Residents will be able to book those added appointments starting Monday. More Local News 'As we quickly approach the federal deadline for REAL ID, I am proud to announce the addition of 'REAL ID Tuesdays'—another tool we are using to expand access to REAL ID appointments,' said New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy. Starting next Wednesday all travelers heading to the airport will need a REAL ID to fly. Without either a REAL ID or a passport travelers could risk being pulled aside by a TSA agent for additional screening or asked to leave, according to the agency's website. More: Latest News from Around the Tri-State Residents heading to a REAL ID appointment are expected to bring a social security card, a W-2 or 1099 form to confirm their social security number. Additionally, residents will need two forms of proof of address that can be found on a license, a bank statement, a utility bill, a U.S. high school photo ID card with a report card or a U.S. computer-printed pay stub, the DMV said. REAL ID ‘emergency' appointments added in NJ after airline reminders

The REAL ID requirement will take effect on May 7, when Americans must have a new form of identification in order to fly domestically. Other forms of identification that will be accepted in lieu of a REAL ID include a valid U.S. passport or passport card; DHS trusted traveler cards such as Global Entry; Department of Defense IDs; permanent resident cards; and border crossing cards. Last week in New Jersey, the Department of Motor Vehicles (NJDMV) website showed '0 appointments available' on various days for REAL ID services on its site. On Wednesday afternoon, two REAL ID appointments were open in the Garden State. In an effort to meet demand, the state of New Jersey announced it has launched a 'REAL ID Emergency Issuance Program,' which begins Thursday. The emergency issuance program is 'for qualified customers who need to board a domestic flight within 14 days for life-or-death reasons or for urgent travel plans and do not have an acceptable form of identification to clear TSA checkpoints,' said a NJMVC press release. 'Anticipating the recent increase in demand, which is being seen all over the country, we have made many additional accommodations to service as many customers with REAL ID as possible, including with this new emergency program,' said Acting NJMVC Chief Administrator Latrecia Littles-Floyd. The program will continue beyond the May 7 deadline and will be offered to 'a limited number of customers who meet certain criteria,' the release also noted. 5 With the REAL ID requirement taking effect on May 7, New Jersey is launching an emergency issuance program to meet demands.
