Tamil Nadu awards first large-scale battery storage project to NLC India Renewables
CHENNAI: In a major step towards augmenting clean and reliable power supply in Tamil Nadu, a first-of its-kind contract for setting up 500 MWh Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) has been awarded to NLC India Renewables Limited (NIRL). The project awarded by Tamil Nadu Green Energy Corporation Limited (TNGECL) is the first large-scale battery storage system to come up in Tamil Nadu after the state came up with an exclusive policy for energy storage systems. Under the central government's Viability Gap Funding (VGF) Scheme, 30% of the capital cost for BESS will be provided as financial support. Tamil Nadu is among the six renewable energy-rich states that were allocated BESS capacities under the initiative alongside Gujarat, Karnataka, Rajasthan, Telangana, and Maharashtra. Officials said the battery system will help store surplus solar and wind energy, which are seasonal energy sources, and supply the power generated when needed, especially during night hours or cloudy days. The award comprises development of three standalone BESS projects with a combined capacity of 250 MW / 500 MWh, to be established at 400/230/110 kV Ottapidaram Substation, 400/230/110 kV Annpankulam Substation and 400/230/110 kV Kayathar Substation in Tamil Nadu. A senior official from TNGECL said that large-scale tapping of renewable energy sources like solar and wind comes with its own challenges, including technology for storing power during lean seasons and managing the state's power grid, as these sources are not available throughout the year.

NLC India secures 250 MW/500 MWh battery energy storage project in Tamil Nadu
By Aman Shukla Published on June 22, 2025, 12:59 IST NLC India Renewables Limited, a wholly owned subsidiary of NLC India Limited, has secured a major project from Tamil Nadu Green Energy Corporation Limited (TNGECL). The company has received the Letter of Award (LoA) for developing three standalone Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) projects with a combined capacity of 250 MW/500 MWh. This initiative marks NLCIL Group's first large-scale BESS project, representing a significant milestone in its clean energy journey. The projects are designed to support two full charging/discharging cycles per day to ensure flexible, on-demand power usage. The BESS projects will be executed under the Build-Own-Operate (BOO) model with Viability Gap Funding (VGF) provided under the state scheme. The storage units will be installed at three key substations in Tamil Nadu: 400/230/110 kV Ottapidaram SS 400/230/110 kV Anuppankulam SS 400/230/110 kV Kayathar SS Awarded through a competitive bidding process, this project aligns with Tamil Nadu's push for green energy infrastructure and highlights NLC India's growing role in the renewable energy storage space. NIRL, MAHAPREIT forge green energy alliance for 2000 MW projects in Maharashtra
NLC India Renewables Limited (NIRL), a wholly owned subsidiary of NLC India Limited, on Thursday, signed a joint venture agreement (JVA) with Mahatma Phule Renewable Energy and Infrastructure Technology Limited (MAHAPREIT) in Mumbai. This partnership aims to develop up to 2000 MW of diverse renewable energy projects across Maharashtra, with ambitions to scale up to 5000 MW. The agreement, building upon a Memorandum of Understanding signed on April 16, 2025, establishes a joint venture (JV) with an equity structure of 74 per cent held by NIRL and 26 per cent by MAHAPREIT. The JV will initially focus on developing 500 MW in Phase I, encompassing a wide range of renewable energy sources, including solar, wind, hybrid, floating solar, Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS), pumped storage, and solar parks. Under the terms of the agreement, MAHAPREIT will play a crucial role in identifying and facilitating land allotment for the projects, as well as supporting the development of power evacuation systems to the grid. NIRL, on its part, will be responsible for preparing detailed project reports, arranging financing, and undertaking the development of these renewable energy projects. "The signing of this joint venture agreement between NIRL and MAHAPREIT is a demonstration of the government's commitment to fostering collaborative partnerships that accelerate the country's transition to green energy." said Vikram Dev Dutt, Secretary, Ministry of Coal. He further added that Maharashtra's immense renewable potential, coupled with NIRL's proven execution expertise and MAHAPREIT's regional strength, positions this JV as a 'catalyst for sustainable growth and energy security.'
