North Myrtle Beach Police Department cracks down on drivers violating bus stop laws

NORTH MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. (WBTW) — North Myrtle Beach police said they have been getting 'many' complaints of drivers passing school buses when stopped. Police said this is happening mostly at the intersection of Highway 17 and Westport Drive, in front of the Starbucks. State law states that drivers must stop for a school bus when it's stopped or preparing to stop with its red lights on or stop arm extended. NMBPD said if drivers are caught passing a school bus when stopped, they will receive a fine of more than $1,000 and six points off your license. 'Who knows, maybe a kid is running late for school and trying to get across the street or something,' Officer Pat Wilkinson with NMBPD said. 'So, if you see the lights, see the flashing red lights, come to a stop.' He added that in less than a month, the department received 12 complaints, from both community members and bus drivers, of vehicles driving past a school bus when red markers and lights are on. 'The traffic division took this incentive to start stopping cars and being mindful of these specific areas where buses are unloading in the afternoon,' Wilkinson said. 'Sure enough, when posting up, we have seen it is a problem. We have to take further enforcement on it.' NMBPD posted a video of someone violating one of the bus stops to their Facebook account. 'I think people need to think about the severity of it. You know it's not just us trying to catch somebody in a traffic violation, this is a time when kids are being dropped off and trying to get home from school,' he furthered. 'As we all know, kids are kind of unpredictable.' Along with the video, the police department directed people how to properly treat school bus stoppings. 'When you get on US 17, here in North Myrtle Beach, you have three lanes of traffic heading in the same direction that is separated by a double turning lane or a median and three lanes going in the opposite direction,' Wilkinson explained. 'So, when a school bus comes to a stop and let's say we're driving south, and in one direction, and the bus in front of us stops, all three lanes need to stop.' Wilkinson said this recent Facebook post on cars illegally passing stopped school buses has received lots of attention. One person commented a suggestion to put up cameras at the drop-off intersections. Wilkinson said many of the collisions they work are because people are either in a hurry or distracted. 'If you see the yellow flashing lights, go ahead and come to a stop,' he said. 'Be safe about it because the whole point behind it is keeping the kids safe.' Officer Wilkinson said once the stop sign and flashing red markers are put away, you may then proceed with caution. * * * Jackie LiBrizzi is a multimedia journalist at News13.
