Develop geospatial technology roadmap, departments urged

Bengaluru: Karnataka State Council for Science and Technology (KSCST) has urged govt departments to create a roadmap on how they will utilise geospatial technology. Addressing district officials from various departments Monday, KSCST executive secretary (Bengaluru) UT Vijay said: "Create a geospatial action plan on how you will use GPS, GIS and remote-sensing technology to implement schemes. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Over the past three decades, Natural Resources Data Management System (NRDMS) centres in 31 districts captured data from geospatial technology, and simplified reports in the form of maps were given to departments." Explaining the role of simplified reports, he said: "GIS (geographic information system) has been useful in security planning during elections. Districts have been helped to prioritise lake-revival projects based on the percentage of water-storage reduction, water spread area, catchment areas and acres it will serve — and these reports are in pictorial/map formats.. ." In the health sector, Vijay explained, infrastructure is mapped in PHCs and CHCs, and intervention during endemics can be better planned with data that can easily be comprehended. Geospatial data also tracks/optimises milk collection and distribution for Karnataka Milk Federation (KMF). It aids in responding to disasters more effectively, he added. Isro scientist Sunil S Kulkarni said pictorial data can be more impactful in making governance-related decisions than a bulky file of written reports.
