Kolkata: The Bengal govt will consider a request by the family of eminent jurist Radhabinod Pal to rename Beadon Street in his name. Pal's grandson, Sudhi Binod Pal, in a social media post, mentioned that the Bengal govt has already allocated a "huge grant" to the National University of Juridical Sciences (NUJS) in Kolkata to organise a conclave and dedicate a chair in his name. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now He also urged the Bengal govt, the Kolkata Municipal Corporation, and Trinamool Congress National General Secretary Abhishek Banerjee to take up an "unfulfilled request" to rename either Beadon Street or any other important street in north Kolkata after Justice Pal. The Bengal govt earlier gave a Rs 1-crore grant to NUJS to honour Pal. Abhishek paid his tributes to Pal's memorial in Tokyo on Friday. Sources said, Banerjee has indicated he will take this up with the Bengal govt and KMC upon his return to Kolkata. A jurist from Calcutta High Court, Pal was part of the International Military Tribunal for the Far East conducted by the Allies for the atrocities committed by the Japanese. He was the only judge to give a dissenting vote against the tribunal's verdict, insisting all defendants were not guilty. He is extremely revered in Japan, with the Yasukuni Shrine and the Kyoto Ryozen Gokoku Shrine having monuments dedicated to Pal. Pal, who graduated from Presidency and Calcutta University, was a Calcutta High Court judge and also the Calcutta University vice-chancellor. Beadon Street was named after Sir Cecil Beadon, the Lieutenant-Governor of Bengal from 1862 to 1867. It was during his tenure that the Calcutta High Court was established. This street has already been officially renamed Abhedananda Sarani after Swami Abhedananda, a direct disciple of Sri Ramakrishna.
