Teen struck by lightning in NYC's Central Park as severe weather strikes the east coast
A teenager was struck by lightning in New York City 's Central Park as severe weather swept across the east coast on Thursday. New York City, along with Philadelphia and Washington, D.C., were under severe thunderstorm watches, in the afternoon and evening, according to the National Weather Service. The service warned of 'large hail, damaging wind, and continuous cloud to ground lightning.' In Manhattan Thursday afternoon, a teenager was struck by lightning, CBS News reported. The outlet's sources say he was standing under a tree when he and the tree were hit. The New York City Fire Department told The Independent the teen was taken to Weill Cornell Medical Center. CBS News reported, citing police, that he had injuries to his neck. Its sources said the teen was in stable condition. The National Weather Service warned people to move inside 'immediately.' 'Lightning is one of nature's leading killers. Remember, if you can hear thunder, you are close enough to be struck by lightning,' the service said. Lightning strikes about 25 million times a year in the U.S., according to the service. Roughly 20 people are killed and hundreds more are severely injured by lightning strikes annually around the country, the service said. New York City Emergency Management warned of possible severe thunderstorms in the area until at least 9 p.m. ET. 'Main threats are damaging winds and a very small chance of flash flooding and hail. Regardless of severity, all thunderstorms are dangerous. When it roars, go indoors,' emergency officials wrote on X Thursday afternoon. The severe thunderstorm watches for Philadelphia and Washington D.C. will also be lifted at 9 p.m. ET, according to the National Weather Service. The severe weather has forced delays in air travel on the east coast Thursday evening. Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport has grounded flights until 6 p.m. ET, according to the flight tracking site FlightAware. John F. Kennedy International Airport's inbound flights to New York have been delayed for an average of two and a half hours, FlightAware says. Philadelphia International Airport is experiencing departure delays of more than an hour, according to the flight tracker.

Anne Burrell's TV co-star reveals their heartbreaking final conversation
Anne Burrell's Food Network co-star Melba Wilson has spoken out about her death, legacy, and their last conversation which came just a week before her death. Burrell, best known for hosting the Worst Cooks in America show and the Secrets of a Restaurant Chef, was found unconscious in her New York home's shower early on Tuesday morning by her husband Stuart Claxton, it is reported. She was later pronounced dead when the emergency services arrived. Her cause of death has not been confirmed, but according to the US outlet and the Daily Mail a rep from the NYC Fire Department said the incident was reported to them as a cardiac arrest. While Burrell has been remembered as a 'beloved wife, sister, daughter, stepmother, and friend' in a heartbreaking statement from her family, her industry friends are also mourning. 'This is a tough time for so many of us that knew Anne and that loved her. It was totally unexpected. So to hear yesterday that she's no longer with us is devastating,' New York City restauranteur Melba told TMZ. Opening up about her last conversation with Burrell, which came a week before her death, Melba explained: 'It was fine. We talked about karaoke. We loved karaoke. Anne loved games, she loved backgammon. We always went out to dinner, and did karaoke.' She continued: 'It's just shocking. It's unbelievable to know that someone so vibrant and full of life is no longer with us. '[Burrell] was at my birthday party a month and a half ago dancing; she loved to dance. Any type of music. Her and her husband Stuart were there and had an amazing time.' Asked whether Burrell has mentioned being sick to Melba, the Food Network star explained that she 'never mentioned anything' about that, which is why her death was 'such a shock'. Melba also described Burrell as being able to light up any room, and said her legacy was laughter. 'Her legacy is laughter. Anne always laughed. She always wanted to teach. She's a fierce competitor,' Melba shared. 'The food industry is full of men, and Anne would go toe-to-toe with the best of them. She always wanted to win. She was always very loving, very giving.' Burrell's family shared a statement announcing her death. 'Anne's light radiated far beyond those she knew, touching millions across the world,' they said. 911 call: Chef Anne Burrell may have suffered cardiac arrest before death
Celebrity chef Anne Burrell may have gone into cardiac arrest before she suddenly died in her Brooklyn apartment this week. Officers with the NYPD found Burrell unresponsive inside her Brooklyn home on Tuesday around 7:50 a.m., after a 911 caller reported that the chef had seemingly gone into cardiac arrest, a spokesperson for the NYC Fire Department told TMZ. Paramedics were unable to revive her and the Food Network star was pronounced dead on the scene. She was 55 years old. Burrell's official cause of death has not yet been confirmed by the Office of Chief Medical Examiner and an investigation into the matter is ongoing. Few other details have been provided. Burrell, beloved for her high-energy and enthusiasm for all things for food, became a fan favorite at the Food Network with her signature spiky platinum blonde hair. She got her start as a sous chef on 'Iron Chef America,' but she's perhaps best known for her role on 'Worst Cooks in America,' during which worked to whip struggling chefs into shape. With more than 200 culinary competitions under her belt, she also appeared on shows including 'Chef Wanted,' 'Chopped,' 'Food Network Star' and the new series, 'House of Knives,' which debuted in March. 'Anne was a beloved wife, sister, daughter, stepmother, and friend — her smile lit up every room she entered,' her family said in a statement. 'Anne's light radiated far beyond those she knew, touching millions across the world,' it continued. 'Though she is no longer with us, her warmth, spirit, and boundless love remain eternal.' Burrell is survived by her husband, Stuart Claxton, whom she married in October 2021, and his son, Javier.
