Photo: An Garda Síochána Kildare A teenage boy who was caught speeding on an e-scooter in Co Kildare refused to stop for Gardaí and "drove recklessly' in order to avoid capture. While on patrol in Newbridge in Co Kildare, the Naas Roads Policing Unit spotted a young teenager driving an e-scooter travelling at speeds of up to 50kmh on the R445, despite the law stating that e-scooters must not exceed 20kmh. The teenager was apprehended by Gardaí and the e-scooter was seized. Photo: Garda Traffic on X Three motorists have been arrested in Co Kildare in quick succession of one another for driving while on cocaine. The Naas Roads Policing Unit were out on patrol when they detected an unaccompanied learner driver speeding at 93kmh in a 60kmh zone on a wet local road at Castlekealy in Caragh. Once Gardaí stopped the vehicle, the driver was checked for drugs and subsequently tested positive for cocaine. The driver was arrested and is due in court, while their car was seized. The Naas Roads Policing Unit stopped a vehicle due to an ANPR alert for no insurance. This driver also tested positive for cocaine and was arrested for drug driving. A quick check on the Garda mobility app confirmed the car's insurance had expired in November and had not been insured since. Photo: Garda Traffic on X Meanwhile, in Maynooth, during a mandatory intoxicant checkpoint at Parson Street lead by the Naas Roads Policing Unit, Gardaí stopped a driver who was not wearing a seatbelt. Gardaí quickly discovered the driver was 'very intoxicated' so insisted on doing a roadside breath test. The driver refused to provide a roadside breath specimen and was arrested and brought to Leixlip Garda Station where Gardaí say they remained 'uncooperative' and again, refused to provide a breath, blood or urine sample. "The driver now faces a four-year driving disqualification, a fine of up to €5,000 and up to six months in prison,' said a Garda spokesperson. "Never drive under the influence of drink or drugs. While conducting a speed check on the R445 at Littleconnell in Co Kildare where the speed limit is 80kmh, the Naas Roads Policing Unit detected numerous motorists travelling at speeds significantly above that limit. One such driver was caught travelling at 144kmh, which is 64kmh over the 80kmh speed limit. Other drivers caught ignoring the speed limit included motorists travelling at 117kmh, 113kmh and 111kmh. Gardaí issued FCPNs to all the speeding drivers who received a €160 fine and three penalty points on their licence. "Speed is a major contributory factor in road traffic collisions,' said a Garda spokesperson. 'Slow down and protect lives,' they urged.

Members of the Kildare Roads Policing Unit were out on patrol across the county as part of the May bank holiday road safety campaign. During a checkpoint in Kilcock, the Naas Roads Policing Unit spotted a Renault Megane who attempted to avoid the checkpoint. Gardaí managed to stop the driver and discovered they had a fake driving licence, no insurance or tax. The driver also tested positive for cannabis and was subsequently arrested for intoxicated driving and is due to appear in court charged with multiple offences. As well as 19 drivers arrested for intoxicated driving, 29 vehicles were seized for offences such as no insurance and no tax, while a number of disqualified drivers and unaccompanied learner drivers were caught by Gardaí behind the wheel. Countless motorists were also caught speeding across the weekend. During another checkpoint, the Naas Roads Policing Unit caught a motorcyclist on the L1009 at Donadea speeding at 122kmh in a 60kmh zone. Gardaí soon discovered that the motorcyclist was a learner driver with no insurance. Their tax also expired a staggering nine years ago. The motorcyclist was arrested and is due in court at a later date. Meanwhile, in a 50kmh zone in the county, drivers were detected travelling at 90kmh, 89kmh and 83km, while in a 60kmh zone in Co Kildare, one motorists was caught speeding 100kmh.
