Malaysia Deeply Regrets UN Security Council's Repeated Failure to Act on Gaza
By Nabilah Saleh PUTRAJAYA, June 5 (Bernama) -- Malaysia has expressed deep regret over the United Nations Security Council's (UNSC) repeated failure to adopt a resolution calling for an immediate and permanent ceasefire in Gaza and the unconditional entry of humanitarian aid into the besieged enclave. In a strongly-worded statement Thursday, Malaysia's Foreign Ministry, Wisma Putra, said the repeated failure of the Security Council to respond to one of the most devastating human tragedies since the Second World War, as a result of the exercise of veto, was indeed regrettable and deeply disappointing. bootstrap slideshow 'Malaysia strongly opposes the Zionist Israeli regime's murder of civilians, their genocide and the perpetration of mass starvation and blockade of humanitarian aid as weapons of war,' the ministry's statement read. The United States (US) on Wednesday vetoed a UNSC draft resolution that called for an 'immediate, unconditional, and permanent ceasefire' in the Gaza Strip, according to international media reports. The draft, proposed by Slovenia on behalf of the Council's 10 elected members - Algeria, Denmark, Greece, Guyana, Panama, Pakistan, South Korea, Sierra Leone, Somalia, and Slovenia - received 14 votes in favour. The resolution expressed 'grave concern over the catastrophic humanitarian situation, including the risk of famine' and recalled the obligations of all parties to uphold international humanitarian and human rights law. Wisma Putra said despite the failure of the Security Council, Malaysia stressed that the international community must not relent in efforts to restore peace, security, and stability in the Middle East. It said the Zionist Israeli regime must realise that the only path to lasting peace and stability in the Middle East is through the establishment of an independent and sovereign State of Palestine, based on the pre-1967 borders, with East Jerusalem as its capital.

Anwar Reaffirms Commitment to ASEAN Cohesion, Maintains Strong Ties with Cambodia
By Nabilah Saleh KUALA LUMPUR, May 16 (Bernama) -- Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has reaffirmed Malaysia's commitment to ASEAN cohesion and constructive engagement with regional partners amid complex geopolitical challenges and growing concerns over cross-border repression. In an interview with Al Jazeera's 101 East, released Thursday on the channel's YouTube platform, Anwar stressed the importance of ASEAN remaining united as the region faces mounting pressure from major powers and intensifying trade tensions. bootstrap slideshow 'We have been quite cohesive. I think we need to strengthen that bond together in this changing geopolitical environment. 'The focus is on intra-trade, investment, and taking a common position vis-à-vis the big powers and our neighbours,' he said during the interview with senior journalist Mary Ann Jolley. Anwar also described Malaysia's relations with neighbouring countries as 'excellent' and emphasised that many regional issues are best resolved through direct personal engagement. He reiterated that ASEAN centrality must remain a core guiding principle as the region faces new global trade dynamics, including tariff policies that could impact member states. While acknowledging that tariff changes, particularly from the United States (US), could adversely affect Malaysia, he said : 'If we can secure ASEAN unity and cohesion, we may be able to slightly mitigate the impact.' Malaysia currently holds the ASEAN chairmanship for 2025.

How South Korea's Buldak Noodles Set the World On Fire – and What Malaysia Can Learn
By Nabilah Saleh SEOUL, April 22 (Bernama) -- What began as a daringly spicy noodle in South Korea has become a global food icon -- and Samyang Foods Inc is showing no signs of slowing down. With exports surpassing 1.34 trillion won (US$1 billion) in 2024, the brand behind the iconic Buldak Bokkeummyeon has ignited taste buds, trends, and trade charts in over 100 countries — including Malaysia. bootstrap slideshow Speaking exclusively to Bernama, Seoul-based Samyang Foods Inc attributed the export surge -- up 65 per cent from the previous year -- to the company's laser focus on consumer reactions. 'We created the taste of the street food that foreign visitors used to gather around in Myeongdong. Based on this experience, we have set a goal to spread Korea's spicy flavour globally,' said the company. According to Yonhap News Agency, exports accounted for 77 per cent of Samyang Foods' total revenue, which reached 1.73 trillion won in 2024. Samyang's momentum was further bolstered by the Buldak Challenge, a social media phenomenon that began in 2014 and sparked international curiosity about Korean spicy ramen. Samyang Food Inc said the virality of the Mukbang Challenge had significantly boosted brand visibility and led to stronger digital marketing strategies. The company also credited its proactive approach to halal certification as a key to penetrating Muslim-majority markets, including Malaysia and Indonesia.

Malaysia's Diplomatic Footwork In Myanmar Praised As Strategic Breakthrough, Say Analysts
By Nabilah Saleh KUALA LUMPUR, April 21 (Bernama) -- Malaysia's successful engagement with both the Myanmar junta and the National Unity Government (NUG) has been described by analysts as a diplomatic milestone that enhances the country's stature as a credible regional mediator ahead of its ASEAN Chairmanship in 2025. 'This is a significant breakthrough. Malaysia has been using back-channel diplomacy to bring the junta and NUG on the negotiating table,' said an Associate Professor at the Centre for Indo-Pacific Studies of Jawaharlal Nehru University in New Delhi, Dr Rahul Mishra, to Bernama. bootstrap slideshow 'It signifies the diplomatic footwork Malaysia has been putting in to resolve the crisis,' added Mishra. Echoing Mishra, foreign affairs, security and strategy analyst Collins Chong Yew Keat said Malaysia's bold move represents a deliberate shift from 'conventional models of the past'. Chong noted that Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim's meetings in Bangkok with both Senior General Min Aung Hlaing and NUG representatives mark a 'pragmatic yet delicate balancing act,' with Malaysia positioning itself as a neutral mediator focused on humanitarian outcomes. 'This is significant, as it exemplifies the leadership and readiness on our part to take charge and lead the grouping in finding new ways to seek breakthroughs. 'As the ASEAN chair, Malaysia is leveraging its diplomatic position to prioritise humanitarian aid and ceasefire extensions while navigating ASEAN's internal dynamics and the junta's pariah status within the bloc,' he said. He added that Anwar's framing of the engagement as a response to Myanmar's humanitarian needs — especially after the March 2025 earthquake — allows Malaysia to create 'a neutral space for dialogue' and a strategic opening to engage both sides of the conflict.
