Codava council urges separate census code for Kodavas
Madikeri: A memorandum was sent to the Union minister for home affairs, the registrar general, and Census Commissioner of India by the
Codava National Council
(CNC).
The organisation president, NU Nachappa, welcomed the Union govt's decision and announcement regarding the conduct of a
caste-wise census
along with the General Census Enumeration 2025, which was originally due in 2021.
Meanwhile, in the memorandum, CNC demands and urges the inclusion of a separate code and column as part of the
social engineering process
for the minuscule, micro, indigenous, mono-ethnic warrior clan of
Kodavas
while conducting the caste-wise census along with the General Census Enumeration 2025.
Nachappa opines that the Kodava community believes a separate code and column in the general census, along with caste census enumeration, will facilitate their social engineering process. The benefits include accurate representation.
This will enable the govt to understand the community's specific needs and develop targeted policies for their social and economic development. This will also help protect the Kodava community's unique identity and entity.
As a mono-ethnological community, the Kodavas have a distinct cultural and historical identity that deserves recognition and protection. The Kodavas' warrior heritage is an integral part of their identity, and accurate representation in the census will help preserve their cultural legacy, explained Nachappa.
