Temporary cattle markets planned for Eid

Sacrificial animals at the cattle markets set up at Bata Chowk in Rawalpindi ahead of Eidul Azha. PHOTO: EXPRESS/FILE The district administration has begun preparations to establish seven temporary cattle markets ahead of Eidul Azha. Deputy Commissioner Captain (retd) Nadeem Nasir has tasked all relevant departments with ensuring these markets are fully operational and compliant with government regulations. Under the plan, one market each will be set up in Faisalabad City, Saddar, Samundri, Tandlianwala, and Chak Jhumra, while Jaranwala will host two markets due to higher demand in the area. Presiding over a high-level meeting attended by ADC General Captain (retd) Tayyab Sami, assistant commissioners, cattle market officials, traffic police, local government representatives and other departments, the deputy commissioner issued detailed instructions to ensure timely arrangements and adherence to standard operating procedures (SOPs). He directed that no illegal cattle markets will be tolerated anywhere in the district. "Proper sanitation and drainage, especially in the event of rain, must be ensured," he stressed, adding that fool proof security and an efficient traffic management plan are also critical components of the preparations. All departments have been instructed to remain in close coordination with assistant commissioners. Special checkpoints will be established to prevent the emergence of unauthorized sale points for sacrificial animals. ADC General Captain (retd) Tayyab Sami stated that the cattle markets would be operational 10 days before Eidul Azha. "Various facilities will be available at these markets, including fodder stalls, mobile banking units, water and electricity supply, tenting arrangements, medical booths, and rest areas for visitors," he said. He added that efforts are underway to make this year's arrangements more comprehensive than in previous years, ensuring a convenient and regulated environment for both buyers and sellers. "No one will be allowed to sell sacrificial animals outside the designated markets," he reaffirmed.

Jaranwala ramps up emergency preparedness

While routine life across the city and the rest of Punjab remained largely unaffected by recent Indian strikes, the district administration has ramped up its emergency preparedness in response to the escalating national security situation. A comprehensive contingency plan has been activated, which includes the establishment of a Control, Command and Response Centre (CC&RC), convening of District Implementation and Advisory Committee meetings, and the updating of 22 war contingency schemes. Authorities have also reactivated early warning systems, conducted mock exercises and evacuation drills, and initiated training sessions for emergency response teams. In addition to these security measures, special security arrangements have been made at sensitive locations, and public health institutions are on high alert to deal with any potential crisis. Public engagement efforts have also intensified, with seminars and solidarity walks organized to support the armed forces. Media and stakeholder engagement campaigns are underway to raise public awareness and counter misinformation. A toll-free landline facility has also been launched to enhance civil defense readiness. Under the directives of Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz, practical drills are being conducted across the province, including in Faisalabad, to prepare for emergency scenarios. One such mock drill was recently conducted at Iqbal Stadium, Faisalabad, where Deputy Commissioner Captain (retd.) Nadeem Nasir personally supervised the proceedings. The exercise brought together key emergency response entities including Rescue 1122, the health department, civil defence, police and other agencies. The objective was to evaluate their coordination, response mechanisms, and operational effectiveness during a crisis. During the exercise, Deputy Commissioner Nasir led patriotic chants and reiterated the government's commitment to protecting public lives and property. He emphasised that these drills would continue to ensure a swift and coordinated response in the event of any unforeseen situation. A control room has also been established by the district administration to provide the public with verified updates. Citizens were urged to remain calm and refrain from paying attention to rumours amid the current geopolitical tension. "The safety and resilience of our people is our foremost priority," stated DC Nadeem Nasir. "We are fully prepared and will continue to enhance our response capabilities."

FWMC lifts over 14,000 tons of waste across four districts

A cleanliness drive was carried out under the "Clean Punjab" program by the Faisalabad Waste Management Company (FWMC), clearing 14,632 tons of waste from all four districts over the three days of Eid. FWMC CEO Rauf Ahmed supervised the field officers and staff, ensuring uninterrupted cleanliness services during the holidays. Waste collection figures stood at 5,251 tons on the first day, 4,861 tons on the second day and 4,520 tons on the third day, with all waste transferred to the designated landfill site. For the first time, the Eid cleanliness operation extended beyond urban areas to rural regions, covering mosques, Eidgahs, and graveyards, which were maintained through water sprinkling and lime disposal. Meanwhile, Deputy Commissioner Captain (retd) Nadeem Nasir visited the District Jail, Old Age Home and Children's Hospital on the first day of Eid and distributed gifts and sweets among prisoners, elderly persons and hospitalised children. At the Children's Hospital, the DC inspected staff attendance, ensuring medical personnel were present and attentive to patients. He also reviewed the quality of meals provided to inmates at the District Jail. Addressing the elderly at an old age home, the DC assured them of the district administration's commitment to their well-being, promising continued efforts to provide the best possible facilities.

Eight held over irregularities in Ramazan relief package

The district administration has taken action against officials and retailers involved in irregularities related to the Nigahban Ramazan Package (NRP) 2025. Four medical officers from the District Health Authority and four union council secretaries have been suspended due to unsatisfactory performance, non-compliance with departmental directives, and a sluggish approach to delivering pay orders to beneficiaries at their doorsteps. Additionally, 12 First Information Reports (FIRs) have been registered against device retailer agents (DRA) for illegally deducting money from beneficiaries across the district. The Punjab government launched the Ramzan relief package to support low-income families by providing pay orders for purchasing essential food items. To ensure fair distribution, the district administration formed 1,076 survey teams, consisting of revenue staff, union council secretaries, and medical officers, to collect accurate door-to-door data. As a result, 237,234 eligible beneficiaries were registered—the highest number recorded in Punjab so far. Authorities disclosed that 225,750 pay orders have been successfully distributed, covering 89% of the total beneficiaries. However, 6,857 pay orders were returned due to various reasons, including 1,659 deaths, unmatched CNIC records, overseas migration, and 234 cases of unverified biometric identification. Faisalabad Deputy Commissioner Capt (retd) Nadeem Nasir confirmed that disciplinary action was taken against officials responsible for negligence. Those suspended include medical officers Rehana, M Zeeshan, Iftikhar and M Saleem, along with union council secretaries Asif Manzoor (UC-64), Saeed Ahmad (UC-92), Ashraf Ali (UC-176), and Shaukat Ali (UC-76). A two-member inquiry committee, comprising the Deputy Director of Local Government and the Chief Executive Officer of the District Health Authority, has been formed to investigate the matter and assign responsibility. Deputy Commissioner Nasir emphasised that Chief Minister Punjab has a zero-tolerance policy for corruption and is committed to ensuring relief reaches the underprivileged during Ramadan. Additional Deputy Commissioner General Capt (retd) Tayyib Sami, who is overseeing the NRP, revealed that dozens of retailers have been arrested after video evidence surfaced on social media, exposing them illegally deducting Rs1,000 to Rs500 from beneficiaries. The district administration registered 12 FIRs under Section 420 of the Pakistan Penal Code against the involved retailers.

Women's Day goes mostly unnoticed

An elderly woman sells bangles along Satyana Road in Faisalabad. International Women's Day was observed across the world on Saturday. photo: online International Women's Day passed with little official recognition in Faisalabad, as no significant events, rallies, or awareness programs were organized at the government level. The only official acknowledgment came from Commissioner Faisalabad, Mariam Khan, who issued a statement through the information department, expressing solidarity with Pakistani women. However, she spent the day attending an official meeting on the Ramadan pay order distribution package. Similarly, Deputy Commissioner Faisalabad, Captain (retd) Nadeem Nasir, limited his involvement to chairing a District Design and Planning Committee meeting, which approved commercial projects, including plazas and petrol pumps in the city. Despite Faisalabad's large female population, the absence of official observances stood in contrast to past years. However, a silver lining emerged in the private sector, where Human Rights Focus Pakistan (HRFP) and the Taiwan Foundation for Democracy (TFD) marked the occasion with a dedicated event focusing on gender equality and the challenges faced by marginalised women. The HRFP-TFD event, held under the UN theme "For All Women and Girls: Rights, Equality, Empowerment," brought together women from diverse backgrounds to raise awareness about discrimination and promote collective efforts toward a more inclusive society. Discussions centered on gender equality as a fundamental component of achieving the United Nations' 2030 Agenda and its 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). HRFP President Naveed Walter emphasized that gender equality is a basic human right and a key driver of economic development, productivity, and social progress. However, he pointed out that deep-rooted discrimination continues to limit women's opportunities, particularly in the workforce, where wage gaps and professional segregation persist. Walter also highlighted the specific challenges faced by religious minority women, particularly Christian and Hindu communities in Pakistan. He noted that these women are disproportionately subjected to physical, sexual, and psychological abuse, as well as forced conversions and marriages.
