Amit Shah to lay foundation stone for National Forensic Science University tomorrow
Nagpur: Union home minister Amit Shah will lay the foundation stone for the Nagpur campus of the National Forensic Science University (NFSU) at Kamptee on Monday, marking a major milestone in Maharashtra's efforts to become a hub for forensic science education. As first reported by TOI on Jan 15, the Nagpur campus, located on a 50-acre site in Mouza Chicholi, will be NFSU's tenth across India and the second in Maharashtra after Pune. The permanent campus is expected to be ready within two years. Until then, the university will operate from a temporary campus at Nagpur University's building near the Visvesvaraya National Institute of Technology (VNIT), currently housing the Police Bharosa Cell. This facility has two vacant floors that will be repurposed for NFSU's academic and research activities. Amit Shah will also inaugurate the temporary campus virtually. "This new campus will strengthen forensic research and innovation, equipping students with specialised skills crucial for law enforcement and cyber investigations," said a home ministry spokesperson. The Nagpur campus will offer courses such as MSc in Forensic Science, MSc in Cyber Journalism, and a Professional Diploma in Crime Scene Management. Online admissions for the first academic session started on March 18, with applications closing on May 5. The initiative aligns with the growing demand for forensic experts across India, aiming to nurture professionals for careers in law enforcement, criminal justice, and beyond. Prime Minister Narendra Modi, then chief minister of Gujarat, established the NFSU in 2009 to develop skilled professionals in forensic sciences. The Gandhinagar-based university currently operates campuses in Delhi, Bhopal, Goa, Tripura, Pune, Guwahati, Manipur, Dharwad, and Uganda, with new campuses planned in Raipur, Chennai, Bhubaneshwar, and Jaipur. The establishment of the Nagpur campus is expected to bolster Vidarbha's educational landscape and enhance India's forensic capabilities, supporting the region's aspirations to emerge as a knowledge hub. Bhosale-era well choked with algae and garbage
Nagpur: A centuries-old stone well, located in the secluded forested patch along the stretch of road — locally known as Amraipara road — between Sonegaon and the Nagpur Airport, lies in a state of disrepair. Once a vital water source and an example of traditional water architecture , the well has now been reduced to a dumping ground, its waters stagnant and choked with algae and waste. The structure, believed to be from the Bhosale period, features a deep, stone-lined reservoir with curved walls and arched alcoves, hinting at the craftsmanship of a bygone era. The multicoloured brick layers and symmetrical design suggest multiple construction phases, pointing to its historic civic utility—possibly as part of a step well system or a colonial water network. Now, the well stands buried under years of neglect. Rusting iron beams span the width of the well, indicating retrofitting efforts that have since failed. The surface is covered with green moss and algae, while the bottom is littered with plastic bottles, polythene bags and other debris. Tree roots creep through the walls, and the air is heavy with the stench of decay. Locals living nearby are dismayed. Janardhan Kale, a resident of HB Estate, said: "It's very sad that such an old monument lies in this sorry state. It could have been a heritage attraction, but now it's a health hazard. The site is often overlooked because of its hidden location near the temple and tree cover." The well, supposedly once a source of clean water, has now become a breeding ground for mosquitoes and a risk to nearby groundwater. With no fencing or signage, it poses a danger to children and passers-by. Despite the evident heritage value of the structure, efforts toward conservation remain non-existent. When approached by The Times of India, officials from the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) said the well is not listed as a protected site under either state or national heritage categories. "It does not fall under our jurisdiction," an official stated, adding that the ASI cannot allocate resources to structures not officially recognized. Citizens, however, argue that lack of documentation or listing should not prevent authorities from preserving culturally significant structures. "Every time we lose a piece of history to garbage and neglect, we lose a story," said Shrey Verma, a resident of HB Estate. Locals are now demanding that the Nagpur Municipal Corporation or the State Archaeology Department take responsibility for cleaning and fencing the well, and begin the process of heritage recognition.

CISF conducts security drill at Nagpur airport after Operation Sindoor
NAGPUR: The Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) carried out a mock exercise at Nagpur Airport on Thursday, May 8, 2025, following Operation Sindoor , which was carried out by the Indian Armed Forces inside mainland Pakistan and in PoK in response to the Pahalgam terrorist attack. The exercise was conducted amid heightened security measures at all Indian airports. The exercise involved CISF's QRT team, alongside their personnel and officers. Upon activation of the siren, airport staff were directed to evacuate and assemble at a designated location. During the exercise, CISF officers briefed airport staff about safety protocols to be followed during hostile situations or military conflicts. The drill was part of nationwide security measures implemented after the Ministry of Home Affairs instructed all states and union territories to evaluate their preparedness against new and complex threats.

Heat and hail: Temp rises in Nagpur, Akola, other parts of Vid brace for thunderstorms
1 2 Nagpur: The maximum temperature once again shot up to 43.2 degrees Celsius in Nagpur on Tuesday before a thunderstorm and gusty winds brought much needed respite towards the evening. Earlier in the day, hailstorms lashed Gadchiroli keeping its maximum temperature at 40 degrees Celsius. Hail measuring the size of chickpea were reported from some parts of Gadchiroli. The district also recorded 15.4mm rainfall in the last 24 hours. A yellow alert has been issued for Nagpur, Wardha, Bhandara, Gondia, Gadchiroli and Amravati for the next three days as more thunderstorms and lightning are like to occur. Chandrapur has been put on orange alert for another day with similar weather conditions, but with higher intensity. Akola was the hottest in the region on Tuesday at 44.6 degrees Celsius followed by Nagpur. Amravati, Wardha, Brahmapuri, Chandrapur and Washim too recorded over 42 degree Celsius. Gondia recorded the lowest maximum temperature of 37.4 degrees Celsius and rainfall of 6.2mm. The regional meteorological center (RMC) issued a hail and thunderstorm warning for Bhandara, Gondia and Gadchiroli with some parts under orange alert in the evening. Lightning and moderate thunderstorm warning was issued for Nagpur, where squalls hit several parts of the district towards the evening. Meanwhile, the aerodrome 'nowcast' accurately picked up a thunderstorm near the airport. Thunderstorm, lightning, and gusty winds occurring near Nagpur Airport at around 4pm on Tuesday was accurately picked up by the aerodrome nowcast service of regional meteorological centre. The thunderstorm accompanied by lightning and very light rainfall occurred near the airport, driven by gusty winds reaching speeds of approximately 40 knots. The weather event was associated with the approach of cumulonimbus (CB) clouds, aerodrome meteorological office (AMO) director Rizwan Ahmed said. "In response, an aerodrome warning was issued at 1040 UTC (4pm IST) by the duty officer of AMO Nagpur, valid for four hours. Such warnings are critical for alerting aircrews and airport personnel to potentially hazardous meteorological conditions — such as CB clouds — that could impact ground operations, including aircraft handling, maintenance activities, and the safety of parked helicopters," he said. The satellite and radar imagery effectively captured the development of this weather system, aiding in the timely issuance of the warning, he said. Of late, the RMC has been accurately predicting weather developments, which have helped various authorities to respond with full preparedness.
