Kickstart Process To Grant Metro City Tag To Nagpur: Fuke Writes To Fadnavis

Nagpur: MLC Parinay Fuke on Thursday wrote to CM Devendra Fadnavis requesting to kick start the process for Nagpur to be officially tagged as a 'metro city', something which will bring in multiple benefits for the area apart from boasting rights. The power to reclassify any city as "X" category, or a metro city, lies with the central govt's Directorate of Census Operations. While having a 50 lakh-plus population is needed to be reclassified as "X" city, the central govt's Urban Agglomeration (UA) clause allows population of neighbouring urban areas to be counted. This means that areas like Kamptee etc can be included in census of Nagpur city, thus propelling it to metro city tag. Fuke in his letter said, "Despite Nagpur being the second capital of Maharashtra, it has not yet received metro city status from the central government, which is concerning. Nagpur has institutions like AIIMS, the high court, Vidhan Bhavan, MIHAN project, along with significant industrial and government establishments. Yet, the consideration for granting Nagpur metro city status has not been done". Fuke added, "If the areas under NMRDA, including Beltarodi, Khapri, Hingna, Wadi, Piwala, Narsala, Godhni, Zingabai Takli, and nearby regions are counted within Nagpur's urban population (Urban Agglomeration), then Nagpur will immediately qualify for metro city status". by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like An engineer reveals: One simple trick to get internet without a subscription Techno Mag Learn More Undo Rina Sinha, president of Vidarbha Economic Development (VED) Council said Nagpur truly deserves the metro tag. "VED Council has always maintained that it's time Nagpur gets its due by getting a metro tag as it fulfils all conditions of UA clause," said Sinha. "We can easily achieve the 50-lakh population with the peripheral towns which are very much a part of Nagpur thanks to the phenomenal connectivity. Nagpur is becoming one of the fastest growing cities with major investments, literate population and central location," said Sinha. She added, "VED Council appeals to the District Collector to further its application to the authorities making Nagpur the next metro city in the country. The prestige of being called a Metro City is due for we Nagpurians." The Urban Agglomeration (UA) clause of the Census Department allows adjoining urbanised areas to be counted as part of a city's total population when determining eligibility for metro city status. For inclusion under UA, the growth must be contiguous, without rural gaps, and the adjoining areas must have urban infrastructure. This provision is used to account for suburban and peri-urban regions functionally integrated with the main city. Once applied, the combined population of the core city and its adjoining urban pockets can help meet the 50 lakh benchmark required for metro city classification. The Census Department assesses and certifies UA status. An X category city is a classification used also for determining allowances like House Rent Allowance (HRA) and Transport Allowance for central government employees. Cities with a population of 50 lakh and above, as per the Census Department, are categorised as X category. This status directly impacts employee benefits and service conditions.

City received 58% of July's monthly rainfall in a day

1 2 Nagpur: In line with the red alert issued by the weather department, heavy to very heavy rains pounded Nagpur city and surrounding towns, cutting off villages and flooding scores of localities besides crippling traffic. A staggering 202.4mm rainfall was recorded in the 24 hours ending 8.30am on Wednesday in Nagpur, the highest since 2018. An orange alert has been issued for Nagpur division for Thursday also. This was only the second time Nagpur received over 200mm of rain in 24 hours in July in the last 10 years. The heaviest rainfall for this month in 24 hours was 304 mm on July 12, 1994. On July 7, 2018, Nagpur had recorded 282mm rainfall in 24 hours. Nagpur's normal monthly rainfall for July is 347.7 mm, with 14.7 rainy days. More than 50% of Wednesday's rainfall — 124.8mm — hit Nagpur within a short period from 11.30pm on Tuesday to 8.30am Wednesday. The minimum temperature slid to 25 degree Celsius in Nagpur while it remained under 27 degrees in other Vidarbha districts. Upgrading its weather warning, the RMC had placed Nagpur on red alert with another 21cm of rainfall expected by Wednesday evening. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Little-Known RMD Strategy Approved by the IRS Undo Dense clouds with continuous rains greeted Nagpurians since late on Tuesday night, and on Wednesday morning many remained indoors and enjoyed a holiday. The intensity of the rains grew around 9am on Wednesday as Nagpur came to a standstill. The rains eventually took a break after a 72-hour run sometime in the afternoon. Visuals also showed Nagpur Railway Station tracks flooded with rainwater. The IMD has again issued a low to moderate flash flood warning, marking Bhandara and Gondia as areas of concern. Vidarbha districts, including Nagpur, Gondia, Bhandara, Chandrapur, and Gadchiroli, have been receiving heavy rains for the last three days, leaving many dams and reservoirs reaching the danger mark. Following overnight rains in Nagpur, all gates of Wadgaon Dam were opened at 8am with a discharge of 393.2397 m3/sec. Vehicular traffic was disrupted due to water flowing over the bridges of the Chandrabhaga River near Brahmapuri village, and the Kolar River near Patansawangi village on the Dhapewada to Patansawangi state highway in Nagpur district. A couple of villages were cut off in Kamptee town, 20km from Nagpur city. Images shared by district officials showed completely submerged roads in Pandhurna village of Kamptee. IMD scientist posted at RMC Nagpur, Dr Rizwan Ahmed, said the monsoon continues to remain active over Vidarbha, with several districts recording moderate rainfall in the past 24 hours. "Under the influence of a low-pressure area over the Bay of Bengal and an active monsoon trough, moderate to heavy and isolated very heavy rainfall is likely to persist across many parts of Vidarbha over the next 3 to 4 days. Also, isolated extremely heavy rains on Wednesday are likely to occur. The monsoon trough currently lies north of its normal position, further enhancing rainfall activity over Central India," he said. Satellite imagery from July 9 (8.30am) indicated intense to very intense convection with cloud top temperatures colder than -90°C over Vidarbha and adjoining areas of Chhattisgarh, supporting the forecast for isolated heavy to very heavy rainfall in the region during this period, Dr Ahmed said. Bhiwapur (192.1mm), Umred (180.1mm), Nagpur city (170.5mm), Nagpur rural (149.3mm), Kamptee (158mm), Hingna (158.3mm), Ramtek (139.3mm), Parseoni (103.9mm), Mauda (143.4mm), Katol (106mm), Narkhed (87mm), and Kalmeshwar (186.8mm) talukas were battered by very heavy to extremely heavy rains.

Tale Of two NCPs & Senas: Civic Polls Pit Split Parties In Battle Of Survival

Nagpur: The palpating buzz around local body polls in Maharashtra is not without reason, as for the time ever civic bodies like Mumbai, Pune and Nagpur will witness six major parties competing to take control of these municipal corporations. Apart from national parties BJP and Congress, there are two factions each of Shiv Sena and NCP, which has added an interesting twist to the polls likely to be held later this year. For both factions of Shiv Sena and NCP, this is going to be a litmus test as they are the only major (in terms of MPs/MLAs) regional allies within Mahayuti and Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA). All four regional outfits are keen to stave off the growing footprint of their national-level allies. In short, it's a battle for political survival at the ground level. And compounding the problem is speculation of cousins Raj and Uddhav Thackeray joining hands ahead of the polls, apart from rumours that both NCP factions too may unite. Prashant Pawar, Nagpur city president (NCP-Ajit), said, "Whether or not the parties merge is known only to two people. Ajit dada and Sharad Pawar saheb. We all don't even think about it as the focus is just to work for the party." He added that last year's assembly polls have proved that NCP (Ajit) faction is the one which people favour. "All the major leaders are in our faction. Apart from this, people have seen the work that Ajit dada has done. People are fully behind us," said Pawar. Mangesh Kashikar, Shiv Sena (Eknath Shinde) leader from Nagpur, too added that their faction has proven its 'worth'. Kashikar said, "Check how many MLAs we have and how many they have. And even now, there are many leaders on the waiting list who are going to join us." About regional parties fighting for political turf in Nagpur, NCP (Sharad Pawar) leader Duneshwar Pethe said, "It has been just over a year since the NCP split. Before that, everything was done by NCP under the leadership of Sharad Pawar Saheb. Is it not a shame that the water problem exists in Nagpur despite BJP being in power for the last 15 years in the civic body, and over a decade in the state? People have told us that they are fed up with Mahayuti and want things to change. We will solve issues related to school fees and garbage collection. English medium schools will be started in NMC to ensure free education for kids. We need to plan out hawkers' zones so that traffic management is also smooth. Just making flyovers does not increase the beauty of the city." Shiv Sena UBT leader Nitin Tiwari said, "People will trust us with their votes because they know that Sena UBT has been at the forefront, fighting for the rights of Nagpurians. We have carried out multiple andolans, exposed corruption by contractors in civic body affairs, and questioned the deterioration of infrastructure in the city. Our party will transform the way the city functions by providing transparent and efficient governance. " His party colleague Kishore Kumeriya said, "Shiv Sainik's real DNA is the teachings of Balasaheb Thackeray, and they are the ones who are in UBT. Shiv Sena runs only because of the foot soldiers, and Sena UBT is filled with grassroot level workers. Also, people have seen the amazing work done by Uddhav Thackeray during his tenure as CM, and that also has an impact on the party image." Shiv Sena (Eknath Shinde) leader Kashikar said, "Our party is full of leaders who have not only come from UBT but also from other parties. Our strength is growing by the day and in the next week some other big names are joining. Statistically, we had only two seats in NMC so there really is not much to lose. And our study tells us that this time we will bag 12 seats." Follow more information on Air India plane crash in Ahmedabad here .
