Carmelo Anthony plans to have Sixers legend to present him at Hall of Fame
NBA legend Carmelo Anthony is being inducted into the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame as part of the 2025 class. The No. 3 pick of the legendary 2003 NBA draft, Anthony was a 10-time All-Star, made an All-NBA Team six times, and is a member of the NBA's 75th Anniversary Team while averaging 22.5 points and 6.2 rebounds for his career. As Anthony moves into the Hall of Fame, he now needs somebody to present him. While hopping on an episode of "Podcast P with Paul George", Anthony plans to have Philadelphia 76ers legend Allen Iverson as one of the three people he plans to present him: You have AI who impacted my whole professional career. We all know the impact that AI had on us. We can relate to that product of environments and still going out there and doing what you gotta do. Iverson, of course, was traded from the Sixers to the Nuggets early in the 2006-07 season and teamed up with Anthony in the Mile High City. The duo was incredibly tough to stop and were able to build a bond through the game as teammates. Need a break? Play the USA TODAY Daily Crossword Puzzle

Coppin State University, a proud HBCU located in Baltimore, will tip off its 2025–26 men's basketball season with a high-profile showdown against Big Ten contender, the University of Maryland. The game is set for November 3 at CFG Bank Arena in Baltimore as part of the prestigious Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame (HOF) Series, organizers announced Wednesday. Hosted in partnership with Position Sports, the event showcases top-tier college basketball programs in premier non-conference games across the country. Maryland currently leads the all-time series 2–1. However, Coppin State fans still remember the Eagles' dominant 70–53 victory in the first meeting in 1989. That game featured none other than current Coppin State head coach Larry Stewart, who was a standout forward at the time. Since then, the Terrapins have claimed victories in 2022 and 2023. The upcoming contest offers Coppin State a chance to even the series and make a national statement. "It's a great opportunity for our program and institution to be part of the HOF Series in Baltimore to kick off the season," said Stewart. "We're excited to play a top-tier program like Maryland. I expect a packed house full of Eagle and Terrapin fans, plus the great sports fans of Baltimore." The 2025 Hall of Fame Series will feature a doubleheader of regional matchups. Alongside Coppin State vs. Maryland, Towson will face off against Loyola Maryland. Details on game times, tickets, and broadcast coverage will be released soon. Melissa Meacham-Grossman, President of Position Sports, emphasized the importance of the event. "Returning to Baltimore shows the growing excitement around the HOF Series and the region's deep love for college basketball," she said. USA Basketball Names Sue Bird Managing Director of Women's National Team
Last month, Sue Bird was elected to the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame, which is often seen as the culmination of one's basketball journey. While being enshrined in Springfield, Mass., undoubtedly marks the end of Bird's playing days, she's far from finished when it comes to her overall basketball career. That became evident on May 8 when USA Basketball made Bird the first-ever managing director of the U.S. Women's National Team. This newly created position is the same one that Grant Hill, another Hall of Famer, currently has with the Men's National Team. As managing director, Bird is essentially the general manager of the Women's National Team. She will be tasked with identifying the coaches and players to compete at major international events such as the Olympics—with the next coming in 2028 in Los Angeles—and the FIBA World Cup, with the next women's tournament set for Germany in September 2026. 'It's a huge honor,' Bird was a member of Team USA at every Summer Olympics from 2004 through 2020, winning a gold medal each time. Her five Olympic golds are tied with Diana Taurasi for the most in Olympic basketball history, regardless of gender. Bird also won four gold medals and one bronze at the FIBA World Cup. The U.S. Women's National Team has won eight straight Olympic gold medals, dating back to the 1996 Games in Atlanta. That eighth straight gold at the 2024 Olympics broke a tie with the U.S. Men's Team (1936-1968) for the most consecutive gold medals in Olympic basketball history. The U.S. women's team has won gold medals in 10 of the 12 Olympics it has competed in, also winning one silver (1976) and one bronze (1992). Since losing to the Soviet Union in the semifinals of the 1992 Olympics, the United States has been undefeated in Olympic play. The United States also has won 11 FIBA World Cup gold medals, including in each of the last four World Cup tournaments. Related Stories 8/9/2024 8/10/2024 Throughout her basketball life, Bird has been a winner at every level. She won four WNBA championships during her 19-year pro career and is the only player to win a championship in three different decades. She also played overseas, simultaneously to her WNBA career, where she won five Russian League titles, was a five-time EuroLeague champion, and also won a pair of EuroCups. As an amateur, Bird was a two-time champion at the University of Connecticut, including an undefeated season. In her senior year at Christ the King Regional High School in Queens, N.Y., her team went undefeated and won the state and national titles. Bird said she believes that all of her basketball experiences have helped her prepare for this role, and that she can also translate some of her skills on the court into managing. 'At this point really every experience that I had along my journey as a player is going to play a role,' 'I know myself and I am a quick learner. The way that I played the game had a lot of understanding in it, so I expect the learning curve to go quickly.' Bird does have some front office experience. In 2018, while still playing in the WNBA, she took on an apprenticeship with the Denver Nuggets. She was temporarily a basketball operations associate for the team, a role that exposed her to the ins and outs of what basketball executives do daily. It just so happens that the headquarters of USA Basketball is in Colorado Springs, Colorado, just 70 miles from Denver. Also on Thursday,

Michigan State Makes Tom Izzo Decision on Thursday
At 70 years old, Tom Izzo has accomplished just about everything in his legendary career as head basketball coach at Michigan State. A member of the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame, Izzo has taken the Spartans to the NCAA Tournament Final Four eight times and racked up 737 career wins — 59 of those coming in March Madness. He has been the face of the program in East Lansing since taking over in 1995. And now, he's about to take on a new role. Advertisement For the first time in his illustrious career, Izzo will step into the front office. He's been named one of the co-interim athletic directors at Michigan State, alongside current deputy athletic director Jennifer Smith. They'll be taking over for Alan Haller, who is stepping down. Haller's final day will be May 11. Michigan State President Kevin M. Guskiewicz released a statement on the transition. 'I'm grateful for Alan's leadership since I joined the university and appreciate the success our programs have seen under his leadership," Guskiewicz wrote. "He is deeply committed to this university and has led with honesty and integrity.' Guskiewicz added more on the future of the school's athletic department: 'This is a pivotal time for college athletics, where innovation, effective communications and community engagement are more important than ever. Our next athletic director will lead one of the nation's more storied athletic programs — home to 23 varsity sports, a passionate fan base, a long legacy of academic and athletic excellence, and, most importantly, an ambitious future.' Michigan State head coach Tom Izzo.© Junfu Han / USA TODAY NETWORK Michigan State is coming off another strong season on the hardwood. The Spartans finished the 2024-25 campaign with a 30-7 record, including a 17-3 mark in Big Ten play. They were one win away from another Final Four appearance under Izzo. Advertisement During the season, Izzo passed former Indiana Hoosiers coach Bob Knight for most career Big Ten wins. And even with a new title on the way, Izzo isn't slowing down on the basketball side. He has already hit the transfer portal hard, landing Kalen Glenn from the Florida Atlantic Owls and Trey Fort from the Samford Bulldogs. It's going to be a busy offseason in East Lansing, and Izzo will be right in the middle of all of it.
