US and Europe submit UN resolution condemning Iran 'non-compliance' with nuclear obligations
THREE EUROPEAN COUNTRIES and the United States have submitted a resolution to the UN's nuclear watchdog board condemning Iran's 'non-compliance' with its nuclear obligations. France, Germany, the UK and the US formally tabled the resolution at this week's board meeting of the Vienna-based International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), which is expected to come to a vote tomorrow evening at the earliest. It is the latest move in a years-long effort to restrict Iran's nuclear activities over fears that it is seeking to develop nuclear weapons, which it denies. The diplomatic manoeuvre comes as the United States and Iran have held several rounds of talks mediated by Oman aimed at securing an agreement on limiting Iran's nuclear programme in exchange for sanctions relief. 'The text has been submitted,' three diplomatic sources told AFP tonight. The draft resolution obtained by AFP calls on Iran 'to urgently remedy its non-compliance' with its commitments under the Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT). It also 'deeply regrets' that Tehran 'despite repeated calls from the Board and many opportunities offered… has failed to cooperate fully with the Agency'. The agency's 'inability… to provide assurance that Iran's nuclear programme is exclusively peaceful gives rise to questions that are within the competence of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC)', which can draw up sanctions. The resolution follows an IAEA report in late May that showed 'a general lack of cooperation' by Tehran, diplomats said, including in providing 'credible' answers to questions by the agency as well as the theft of confidential documents and the cleaning up of undeclared sites. Advertisement The report also criticised 'less than satisfactory' cooperation from Tehran, particularly in explaining nuclear material found at undeclared sites in the past. For years, the agency has been trying to obtain clarification on nuclear material and equipment found at undeclared sites and resulting from undeclared activities carried out until the early 2000s. Iran has accelerated its production of near-weapons-grade uranium in recent months. Iran's ambassador to the IAEA Reza Najafi rejected the recent IAEA report, telling AFP that it 'lacks a firm and hard foundation' and 'many issues in the report are referring to past issues'. 'Claiming that Iran is not cooperating fully is not acceptable,' he said, adding that the resolution was 'politically motivated'. Najafi also threatened that Iran will 'react very strongly', in case the resolution is adopted. Iran had earlier accused Israel of contributing 'unreliable and misleading information' to it. The development comes with high tensions in the Middle East over Israel's military offensive in Gaza. Iran has denied seeking nuclear arms and says it needs the uranium for civilian power production. © AFP 2025

Justice Najafi elevated to SC by JCP majority
Listen to article The Judicial Commission of Pakistan (JCP) has approved the nomination of Justice Ali Baqar Najafi to the Supreme Court by a majority vote of 9 to 4. Interestingly, four judicial members of the commission did not support Justice Najafi's elevation to the apex court. The meeting, chaired by Chief Justice of Pakistan Yahya Afridi, was held on Friday. It took up three agenda items, the first being the nomination of a former chief justice or judge from the high courts of Sindh, Balochistan, Peshawar and Islamabad, as outlined in the second proviso to Article 175A(5) of the Constitution. The second item was a request by LHC Senior Puisne Judge Justice Shujaat Ali Khan for the removal of certain remarks and observations from the minutes of the Judicial Commission of Pakistan (JCP) meeting held on July 2, 2024. The third item was considering the appointment of two Lahore High Court (LHC) judges to the apex court. Of the two nominees, only Justice Najafi received the necessary votes for his appointment to the SC. According to sources, a segment of the government was particularly in favour of elevating Justice Shujaat Ali Khan. However, the Pakistan Bar Council (PBC) representative opposed his appointment. Both the government and PTI supported Justice Najafi's nomination to the SC, though four judicial members did not back his elevation. Earlier, the commission, by a majority of its total membership, agreed that the words "negative public perception as to their integrity and reputation amongst the judicial and legal fraternity," used in the minutes dated July 2, 2024, be expunged. During the July 2, 2024, meeting, the JCP had unanimously approved the nomination of Justice Aalia Neelum as the new LHC chief justice, bypassing two senior judges, Justice Shujaat Ali Khan and Justice Ali Baqar Najafi. The JCP had noted that the judges were not suitable or fit to hold the office of the LHC chief justice "largely due to the negative public perception as to their integrity and reputation amongst the judicial and legal fraternity". It said that in a full and frank discussion, all the members of the commission either stated or endorsed the view that "there was a near-universal convergence of negative perception, then any expectancy stood displaced, and the candidature of the nominee ought not to move forward". The JCP minutes further stated that the foundational strength of a judicial institution is public trust. "All members of the commission were of the view that the person who is to be appointed as the chief justice of a high court must possess unchallenged integrity and unblemished reputation." The commission, by a majority of its total membership, has also nominated Justice ® Maqbool Baqar, Justice ® Nazeer Ahmed Langove, Justice ® Mian Shakirullah Jan, and Justice ® Shaukat Aziz Siddiqui as members of the JCP under the second proviso to Article 175A(5) of the Constitution. Meanwhile, it is learnt that the CJP has summoned a meeting of the JCP on April 18 to consider the appointment of chief justices for the Islamabad High Court, Sindh High Court, Peshawar High Court and Balochistan High Court.

CASIT to join forces with academic centres for academic hub launch
The University of California, Los Angeles' (UCLA) Center for Advanced Surgical & Interventional Technology (CASIT) in the US has announced the establishment of a Center to Stream Healthcare in Place (C2SHIP) academic hub in collaboration with over 24 academic and industrial centres. This hub, which was first chosen as a National Science Foundation (NSF) Industry-University Cooperative Research Centers programme in 2021, has now secured a $4m grant from the NSF. The funding will support C2SHIP's mission to enhance in-home healthcare technologies and improve chronic disease management outside the hospital environment. C2SHIP brings together six academic institutions, including UCLA, the California Institute of Technology, the University of Missouri, and the University of Southern California, with more than 20 industry partners. The collaboration aims to drive innovation in healthcare solutions, with a particular focus on empowering individuals to manage their health at home through advanced technology. This UCLA-led effort will be directed by Bijan Najafi, professor of surgery at UCLA Health and the research director of UCLA's CASIT. The team's projects, at the beginning, will concentrate on developing and testing next-generation in-home healthcare solutions such as wearable devices and smart home systems. These technologies will be evaluated in real-world settings, and the team may also initiate related clinical trials in the near future. Najafi said: 'We strive to support the ageing population and individuals with chronic illnesses by fostering a 'care-in-place' ecosystem that integrates remote monitoring, intelligent decision support, and patient-centred care solutions.' In addition to the NSF grant, the hub has garnered support from its industrial members, providing UCLA faculty with opportunities to receive pilot funding. By fostering cross-disciplinary partnerships between medical and engineering schools, the UCLA team, in partnership with C2SHIP's network, aims to accelerate the transfer of knowledge from the bedside to the bench and back again. Last year, UCLA Health acquired West Hills Hospital and Medical Center in Los Angeles, California and its related assets from HCA Healthcare. "CASIT to join forces with academic centres for academic hub launch" was originally created and published by Hospital Management, a GlobalData owned brand.
