INTERVIEW/ Takeshi Nakano: Trump tariffs fueling inevitable collapse of world economic system
U.S. President Donald Trump's high tariffs levied on imports are tossing the world around and leading to irreversible global changes, according to Takeshi Nakano, an economics commentator. He said the ramifications of Trump's tariffs go much further than the immediate consequences of lost sales in the U.S. market. In a recent interview with The Asahi Shimbun, Nakano, known for his books including 'TPP Bokokuron' (The Trans-Pacific Partnership free trade arrangement would ruin the nation), said Trump is seeking a unilateral realignment of the international economic system, a trend that can no longer be stopped. Excerpts of the interview follow: *** Question: How do you see the Trump administration's tariff policy? Nakano: The important thing about the latest tariffs is that they are being imposed on (almost) all countries of the world. In particular, exorbitantly high tariff rates were set for China. So, it's no longer about bilateral trade friction between Japan and the United States. Products from around the world, which are losing the U.S. market, will flow into other nations. That will strengthen deflationary pressure and could trigger scrambles for markets, trade wars and tariff wars among countries other than the United States. Q: What do you think lies in the backdrop of the Trump tariffs? A: The United States has continued to import vast amounts of products, one-sidedly, from the rest of the world and has suffered, as a consequence, from trade deficits and current account deficits. Japan, which has relied on foreign demand, is one of the countries that have taken advantage of an international economic system that is dependent on the United States. All this has engendered the problem of a global imbalance. And the United States is saying that it can no longer withstand that. Japan should take an approach that is totally different from the traditional framework of bilateral talks. The country should increase its domestic demand by taking large-scale fiscal stimulus measures based on international cooperation and call on other countries to refrain from imposing retaliatory tariffs. AIMING FOR WEAKER DOLLAR Q: What is your take on nations' talks with the United States? A: The essential purposes of the Trump tariffs consist of weakening the dollar and tapping into tariff revenue to realize tax cuts in the United States. If Japan were to eliminate its 'nontariff barriers,' that would certainly please the United States, but it would not directly lead to lower (U.S.) tariff rates. What Washington is engineering here is not a trade war but a currency war. Trump is planning to do something that would be tantamount to the 'Nixon shock' of 1971 and the Plaza Accord of 1985. Q: Do you think Trump's policy emerged out of the blue? A: No. A blanket surcharge of 10 percent was imposed on imports by President Richard Nixon during the Nixon shock. That is the same rate as the 'baseline' part of Trump's 'reciprocal' tariffs. Trump cited the U.S. International Emergency Economic Powers Act as the grounds for imposing additional tariffs. That law is successor to the 1917 Trading with the Enemy Act, which was used as the grounds for the import surcharge during the Nixon shock. Trump is doing a repeat of that. Q: Do you think this trend will remain? A: Yes. A collapse of the global economic system appears inevitable even when Trump is no longer there. The burden on the United States has reached its limits, and the trend for going 'America First' did not change even under the administration of President Joe Biden. This is an irreversible trend that will continue into the future. Q: What will be the consequences of a merger between Trump and techno-libertarians (who seek libertarianism through advances in technology)? A: The Biden administration sought to break up the tech industry and regulate cryptocurrencies in an effort to rectify disparities. That infuriated the techno-libertarians, who all at once came to support Trump. Caps on political donations have been found unconstitutional and eliminated in the United States. That is allowing billionaires to do whatever they wish to do. With the huge resources of the tech industry flowing into the Trump camp, the Democrats have no chance of winning any longer. Q: What do you think will become of the United States? A: Properly speaking, Washington should not only be raising tariffs but also be devising industrial policies to bolster the manufacturing industry and taking measures for fixing the disparities. Trump, however, remains liberalistic when it comes to matters other than tariffs and cutting fiscal spending. The United States has become a nation that can no longer fix its own disparities. Trump's backers will realize, sooner or later, that they have been betrayed. When that happens, people in the United States will no longer have any idea who to trust. That could plunge the country into a state of civil war. *** Born in 1971 in Kanagawa Prefecture, Takeshi Nakano graduated from the University of Tokyo's College of Arts and Sciences before joining the Ministry of International Trade and Industry, the predecessor to today's economy ministry. The expert in political and economic thought was also an associate professor with the Kyoto University graduate school. Nakano has authored numerous books, including 'TPP Bokokuron,' 'Kiseki no Keizai Kyoshitsu' (The Miracle School of Economics), 'Sekai wo Senso ni Michibiku Globalism' (Globalism leads the world to war) and 'Jiyu Boeki no Wana' (Pitfalls of free trade). Infield Minerals Advances Exploration at the Kings Canyon Gold Project
VANCOUVER, BC / ACCESS Newswire / March 26, 2025 / Infield Minerals Corp. (TSXV:INFD) ("Infield" or the "Company") is pleased provide an update on recent field exploration work and strategy development for its Kings Canyon Gold Project ("Kings Canyon" or the "Property") in Utah. Infield's technical team has identified several exploration opportunities in key untested high-priority zones. These include high-grade feeder structures, known deposit extensions, untested favourable stratigraphic horizons, as well as anomalous geochemical anomalies that have seen limited historical work. Work campaigns dating back to the 1970s have been compiled by Infield for the first time in the history of the district. This data, in addition to new exploration tools, will be leveraged towards the expansion of the known deposits and additional discovery upside. Infield also reports results for seven rock samples collected in 2025. Highlights: Identification of untested high-priority target areas and discovery opportunities 2025 rock sample results up to 1.28 ppm gold (range <0.005 - 1.28 ppm gold) Low-cost surface program planned to advance exploration toward drill hole targeting "The characteristics and continuity of gold mineralization at the Crown and Royal zones provide excellent training ground for additional discovery within the Kings Canyon district," stated Evandra Nakano, President and CEO of Infield. Ms. Nakano continued, "we are encouraged by the exploration opportunities across the Property, which we believe would benefit from a suite of modern exploration methods." The Property is located in Western Utah, with excellent road access and infrastructure. Situated within an emerging sediment-hosted "Carlin-type" gold system, the Kings Canyon mining district boasts numerous mineral occurrences, however, has lacked consistent and sustained exploration. Geological analogies to the Kings Canyon opportunity include Long Canyon (2.2 Moz Au[1]), Alligator Ridge (1.4 Moz Au[2]) and Kinsley Mountain (0.5 Moz Au[3]) gold deposits (Figure 1). In addition to the ease of access, moderate topography and a Carlin-type geological pedigree combine for an excellent mineral exploration opportunity in an emerging gold belt segment. The geology of the Kings Canyon area is characterized by gently dipping favourable/reactive Paleozoic limestone clast breccia and silty limestone units assigned to the Guilmette and Simonson Formations. Jasperoid zones, silicified-clast breccia and limonitic fracture zones are abundant in the area, associated with strong gold signatures at surface. Classic Carlin-style alteration and mineralization define the known oxide gold deposits at the Crown and Royal zones (Figure 2). Limited historical samples were analyzed for arsenic and antimony and, where available, a correlation between gold mineralization and these elements has been observed. Recent rock sampling (Figure 2) conducted in 2025 also supports this observation and will be used in the future to serve as a guide to exploration. Gold and select multi-element results for the seven samples collected are available in Table 1. Table 1: 2025 rock sample results[5] Significant gold mineralization is contained at a key stratigraphic horizon, situated at the upper portion of the Simonson Formation, just below a geological contact with the Devonian Guilmette Formation (Figures 3 and 4). Exploration upside remains in expanding the extent of the known trends. Holes drilled at angles between 45-70 degrees are required to cross cut and test for potential high-grade feeder structures, whereas drilling to date has been largely vertically oriented. Despite the presence of geochemical anomalies throughout Infield's land position, historical drilling campaigns have not sufficiently tested the key stratigraphic horizons beyond the main (known) mineralized footprints. Infield plans to deploy a Carlin-type gold exploration toolkit to unlock new exploration opportunities and shareholder value. Infield is planning a low-cost surface exploration program intended for Q2-Q3, 2025, with the objective of progressing towards drill hole targeting. Main tools to advance exploration include: Geological mapping to constrain the position of favourable Simonson Formation silty limestone, as well as stratigraphic and structural traps within the overlying Guilmette. Property wide evaluation of drainages for the purpose of designing a stream sediment and soil sampling program that tests for gold and other trace element geochemistry. Stable isotope and UV work as a modern toolkit for Carlin-type exploration (subtle alteration and fringes of gold deposits can be detected using carbon-oxygen isotopic geochemistry as well as UV fluorescence of calcite veins). Structural evaluation using LiDar and mapping, seeking favourable fluid flow corridors such as feeder structures. 3D Leapfrog evaluation and modelling of multiple datasets compiled by Infield (historical and newly generated by Infield). Previous exploration has been hampered by: 1) vertical drill holes, 2) lack of gold pathfinder geochemical data, and 3) limited evaluation of consolidated datasets for the district. Infield Technical Advisor, Dr. Alan Wainwright stated: "The district has proven Carlin-style gold zones. We believe we can identify top tier drilling targets using modern geoscience tools and by deploying a systematic approach to the exploration search space." Infield Minerals is committed to building shareholder value with mineral exploration discoveries in the Western United States. The Company is actively evaluating additional base metal and gold exploration opportunities with a view to expanding its portfolio with projects of merit. Potential acquisitions are vetted for optimal exploration discovery odds, combined with favourable commercial deal terms, in Tier 1 jurisdictions. Qualified PersonTechnical information in this news release has been reviewed and approved by Andrea Diakow, a geological consultant and a Qualified Person as defined by National Instrument 43-101. The potential quantity and grade of mineralization described herein is conceptual in nature as there has been insufficient exploration to define a mineral resource and it is uncertain if further exploration will result in targets being delineated as a mineral resource. Public housing residents' associations in Sendai struggle to find leaders
Residents in public housing in Sendai, where many people who survived the Great East Japan Earthquake and tsunami on March 11, 2011, live, are rapidly aging, and residents' associations are struggling to find people who can serve as board members to work on maintaining the communities. 'We have to make it widely recognized that we have no one who can become a new board member,' said a section leader of the Mebuki residents' association — which comprises residents of the Moniwa No. 2 municipal-run housing complex in Sendai's Taihaku Ward — at a regular board meeting held at the building's meeting place in early February. The section leader gave the remark as the current board members were discussing who should succeed Yoshiaki Nakano, 76, the association's chair, whose term will expire at the end of March. Most of the board members are in their 70s or older. 'Do you understand what it means for a person with health issues, who has no job or money, to serve as the association's chair?' Nakano said as he left the meeting. Nakano was diagnosed with colorectal cancer about three years ago. His physical strength noticeably declined after he underwent surgery and was hospitalized for two months. Immediately after he was released from the hospital, he quit his business of exchanging window glasses and doing plumbing repairs that he had run as the sole proprietor. The Moniwa No. 2 housing complex started accepting residents in 2016. Out of 90 households in the complex, only 60 belong to the residents' association and pay association fees. Roughly 40% of the residents who applied to live there did so under a regular process, not as those whose homes had been destroyed by the 2011 disaster. Nakano is one of the residents in that smaller group. As the residents' association faced the difficulties of building a community consisting of people with varying backgrounds, in 2023, Nakano, then a section leader, was asked by a then-board member to become the chair, and he accepted the proposal. In December last year, the association organized a Christmas party at the complex's meeting place. Fewer than 20 people attended the party, and they were the usual faces, or mainly elderly association members. Nakano speaks during the association's board meeting on Feb. 2. | Kahoku Shimpo At 10 a.m., led by Nakano, the participants made a toast with cups of tea. Soon afterward, one of the participants noticed that a man who had said the previous day he would come to the party was not there. A man in charge of general affairs, worried about the man who was absent, called him. 'I've been drinking. ... I'm not in a condition to meet everyone,' the man replied in a feeble voice. The man, who had been drinking alone from early morning, did not come to the Christmas party. But others were able to get in touch with him via a phone call. Nakano says he has continued to serve as the chair because he feels it is important to maintain such relationships. 'I wish I could quit, but I don't think anyone would want to take up the task,' Nakano said. 'I can't just give it up.' A decade has passed since people started moving into disaster public housing in Sendai. Elderly people — defined as those age 65 and older — make up 43.9% of the residents in such housing. This is 18.7 percentage points higher than the ratio of the elderly population in the entire city. At the Tagonishi No. 2 public housing complex in Sendai's Miyagino Ward, the board members of the residents' association are all in their 80s. The association was once disbanded at the end of March in 2023 after the relations among board members soured. Its meeting place was even temporarily locked up. Four months later, Hiroshi Omura, 83, a former board member, led the move to reestablish the association and became its chair. Omura's house in Miyagino Ward was completely destroyed by the 2011 earthquake. He moved into the Tagonishi No. 2 housing complex in 2015. His wife moved in with him, but her health deteriorated, and she now lives in a care facility. Two people who work with him at the association — the vice chair and the person in charge of accounting — are both 85 years old. 'We want to help each other as people in similar circumstances,' he said with a smile, though his words hinted at worries he may have. This section features topics and issues from the Tohoku region covered by the Kahoku Shimpo, the largest newspaper in Tohoku. The original article was published Feb. 19.
