Van Zandt County lithium battery project raises concerns for residents, experts stress benefits

VAN ZANDT, Texas (KETK)- Residents of Van Zandt County have started taking notice of the effects a lithium battery storage project had on their town. Most are worried about the potential for a lithium battery fire and the lack of resources for local first responders. 'We learned a hard lesson in Van Zandt County,' resident Nancy White said. 'And that was that we were not watching the energy sector.' They worry that the effects of the lithium batteries could also affect their soil, air and property values. White is taking the fight to Austin hoping to gain the attention of lawmakers and show them Texans support securing the grid. 'I would like to put that evidence in the form of verified signatures in their hands for each one,' White said. While White and others are fighting against the implementation of these projects, experts in the field said battery storage is exactly what Texas needs to stabilize the energy grid. 'At a high level, battery storage is fundamental for the grid,' Texas Advanced Energy Alliance Executive Director Matt Bomer said. An issue Texas has is aligning renewable energy with demand, and the addition of all of these battery storage facilities could help solve that problem. Currently, Texas is the fastest-growing battery storage market, only behind California in installed batteries. 'We should see over 10,000 megawatts of battery storage online within the next two years,' Bomer said. For now, the decision lies in the hands of Texas lawmakers, whose session ends on June 2nd. Maggie Phillips provided everyone with the materials needed and talked everyone through the process. Carsphairn SWI president, Melissa Ade welcomed a good turn out to the meeting. The first part of the evening addressed relevant business. Nancy White gave the treasurer's report. Jennifer Harvie then updated members with her work on the heritage element of the SWI. ‌ Work is progressing well on Carsphairn's team entries for the Federation Show in May. Plans for Carsphairn's open meeting beetle drive were refined and there has been positive interest from other SWIs in the Stewartry to attend. Lots of enthusiastic discussion then took place on where the summer outing might take everyone and it was agreed that during the year there will be a visit arranged to The Great Tapestry of Scotland in Galashiels. Notice and reminders were shared regarding upcoming events both Stewartry-wide and more local. Melissa then handed the meeting over to Maggie Phillips. Maggie provided everyone with the materials needed to make an individual slate-based coaster. She explained and demonstrated how to do this by using a napkin, water, and modpodge. Everyone was absorbed by the process and the results were very pleasing indeed. Maggie shared ideas on how to transfer the same skills to glass. There was a great variety of colourful coasters to see when finished and some members had plans to carry on creating at home. Jennifer thanked Maggie for leading the workshop. This was heartily endorsed by everyone there. While everyone was enjoying the refreshments provided by Jennifer and Merle, Jennifer kindly judged the competitions. The daffodils on display which members had brought to enter the competition were beautiful and vibrant. ‌ Vase of daffodils (Watret Trophy) – 1 Irene McCreath; 2 Lavinia Morris; 3 Sheila Little. Judge halts lithium battery storage facility near Canton

CANTON, Texas (KETK) – The district court judge issued a temporary restraining order against the Finland-based company Taaleri Energia currently building a lithium battery storage facility just west of Canton. Van Zandt County Fire Marshal orders battery facility to meet fire codes or face consequences The Amador project was first announced in November 2024 and ever since then community members have been fighting against the development. 'If they meet all the demands, then that's one step closer to knowing we might be safe, but right now, there's a large fear,' community member, Nancy White said. Safety is a concern and reason behind the efforts to prevent the project from moving forward. 'I just don't have the confidence and the security,' White said. 'So, for now, I'm going to say that I'd rather than wait till the technology is ready and it's not.' Multiple community members cited potential threats to both soil and air quality as well as lack of resources for local first responders to handle potential emergencies like a lithium battery fire. The temporary restraining order lasts 14 days and means the company can't move any lithium batteries onto the construction site, or within Van Zandt County. Van Zandt County seeks Trump's support for unwanted foreign-owned lithium battery storage 'In our in our petition, we set out for the court some of our primary concerns,' Van Zandt County District Attorney Tonda Curry said. 'Those regarding the battery testing, the module testing, the container testing, as well as their hazard mitigation plan.' They're also concerned about the emergency operation plan and water access at the site. 'If you are going to come here, your system is going to have to be as safe as it can be,' Curry said. 'And that means it has to meet these National Fire Protection Association standards.' The Finland-based company said in a statement they are working to comply with state regulations for project Amador and said they are actively working with the Van Zandt County Fire Marshal to provide documentation. Curry said if the company doesn't meet the state regulations before the deadline they could proceed with a more permanent injunction. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved.
