Two men arrested for pasting Pakistan flag in West Bengal's North 24 Parganas
The West Bengal Police has arrested two members of a Hindutva group named Sanatani Ekta Manch after they allegedly pasted the flag of Pakistan on the wall of a washroom beside Akaipur railway station. The two men were arrested on charges of attempting to instigate communal violence in the Gopalnagar area of the North 24 Parganas district. 'Yesterday night, a Pakistani National flag was found to be pasted on the walls of a washroom beside Akaipur railway station under Gopalnagar PS [police station],' the police wrote in a social media post. It added: 'Investigation revealed that this was wilfully done by 1. Chandan Malakar (30) and 2. Progyajit Mondal (45), both local residents.' The police said that Malakar and Mondal confessed to the act. The two men had also planned to write 'Hindustan murdabad and Pakistan zindabad', or death to India and long-live Pakistan, on the wall to 'create communal disturbance', it added. 'We shall spare no efforts to bring to book those who are hatching such conspiracies to trigger communal unrest,' the police stated. This comes against the backdrop of incidents of violence and intimidation against Muslims being reported from several states in the wake of the Pahalgam terror attack. Twenty-six persons were killed and 17 were injured in the attack near Pahalgam in Jammu and Kashmir on April 22. The attack took place in the Baisaran area of Anantnag district. Militants fired at tourists, most of whom were from outside the state. The terrorists targeted tourists after asking their names to ascertain their religion, the police said. All but three of those who died were Hindu. Following the attack, Bharatiya Janata Party MLA and West Bengal Leader of Opposition Suvendu Adhikari on April 24 claimed that two Kashmiri men living in Baruipur, on the southern outskirts of Kolkata, had installed a 'NanoBeam 2AC compact and high-performance wireless network bridge' on the roof of their home. Police in Baruipur denied the claim and stated that both men are engineers from Madhya Pradesh and the device installed on their roof is for an internet connection.

BJP Leader Calls For Probe On "Suspicious Activity". It Was A WiFi Antenna
New Delhi: Suvendu Adhikari, Leader of Opposition in the West Bengal Legislative Assembly, on Thursday claimed that two "Kashmiri individuals" had sneakily installed a "high-performance" wireless gizmo on their rooftop in Baruipur, a township on the southern outskirts of Kolkata. He also shared an image of what appeared to be an antenna. However, Mr Adhikari's Sherlock-style probe turned out to be a bust - the two men are not from Kashmir, and the antenna was part of a JioFiber internet connection. The device in question, a NanoBeam 2AC wireless network bridge, is typically employed for long-distance, high-speed wireless internet transmission. Mr Adhikari suggested this installation may be linked to suspicious activities, and publicly called for a probe by both the state police and the National Investigation Agency (NIA). "A local contact of mine has shared information with me that two Kashmiri individuals have installed a NanoBeam 2AC compact and high-performance wireless network bridge at the rooftop. Its designed to provide efficient and reliable solution for high-speed, long-distance wireless connectivity. I would request DGP @WBPolice @NIA_India to look into it and find out whether any suspicious activity is going on," Mr Adhikari wrote on X. Within hours of the remarks, Mr Adhikari's post was plastered with a Community Note by X, citing a Baruipur Police statement refuting his allegations. "The input was immediately verified locally. In reality, the two individuals, one of them a Hindu and the other a Muslim, both from Madhya Pradesh, rented a flat in Baruipur about three weeks ago. Engineers by profession, they were exploring business opportunities in pisciculture in West Bengal through a local friend. There is a simple Jiofibre network in their flat as is used by numerous citizens, with nothing suspicious about it," police said. According to the police, they relocated to Kolkata approximately one year ago and rented a two-bedroom apartment in Baruipur. The incident occurred against the backdrop of heightened tensions following the terror attack in Jammu and Kashmir's Pahalgam, which resulted in the deaths of 26 people, including one from West Bengal. On Thursday, Mr Adhikari visited Bitan Adhikari's family in the Baisnabghata locality of south Kolkata. Bitan, who had been residing and working in Florida, was killed in the attack. "I am hopeful that both the Centre and the state government will promptly provide financial compensation. Bitan was the only earning member of the family and lived in Florida. His wife is a homemaker, and his ailing parents live in Behala," he said.

Police debunk Adhikari's claim on ‘Kashmiris' in Baruipur: No suspicious activity
The West Bengal Police on Thursday dismissed the allegations made by BJP MLA and Leader of Opposition Suvendu Adhikari, who claimed that two Kashmiri men were involved in suspicious activities in Baruipur in South 24 Parganas district. In a post on X, Baruipur police said the two persons in question are engineers from Madhya Pradesh exploring business opportunities in the state. Earlier in the day, Adhikari had posted a photo of a wireless network system disc on X, alleging that two persons from Kashmir were living in Baruipur and engaging in 'suspicious' activities. Adhikari, who shared the address of the flat where the two men live, alleged that they had 'installed a NanoBeam 2AC compact and high-performance wireless network bridge at the rooftop', and demanded NIA probe into it. In an official statement, the Baruipur police said the two persons —one Hindu and one Muslim—had installed a simple Jio Fiber network on the terrace of their rented flat in Baruipur and dismissed the suspicion of the BJP leader of any suspicious activities. 'The two individuals, one of them a Hindu and the other a Muslim, both from Madhya Pradesh, rented a flat in Baruipur about three weeks ago. Engineers by profession, they were exploring business opportunities in pisciculture in West Bengal through a local friend. There is a simple Jio Fiber network in their flat which is used by numerous citizens, with nothing suspicious about it,' Baruipur Police stated on X. 'It is unfortunate that some people choose to disseminate such inaccurate and potentially inciteful information through social media, instead of communicating it to a state or central agency. We expect citizens to exercise restraint and responsibility while using public platforms without jumping to any conclusions,' the police said. They further emphasised the importance of proper channels for reporting suspicious activity. 'Information of this kind shared through social media handles defeats the very purpose. It also merits mention that any kind of public insinuation against any individual without verifying the facts is legally punishable,' the statement added. Speaking to The Indian Express earlier in the day, Superintendent of Police (Baruipur) Prakash Chandra Dhali said that police began a probe soon after Adhikari made the allegations in a post on X. A police team questioned the two persons and verified their antecedents. 'The two are residents of Madhya Pradesh. They came to Kolkata a year ago. One is a civil engineer and the other is a computer engineer. Both had passed engineering in 2016 from Bhopal. They rented a 2 BHK in Baruipur and installed a Jio Fiber for internet connection on April 22,' the SP said. 'They have taken 9 acre of land in Bishnupur for a fishing business. Which is why they wanted to stay nearby. We have verified from all angles, and all the information given by them have been found to be true,' the SP added. It is a false claim that they are Kashmiris.' As per the police, they are also enquiring why it took so long for the owner to prepare a rent agreement. 'There is a hibernation period as the rent agreement sometimes takes time. However, we are enquiring about that too,' added Dhali.

Baruipur police dismiss Suvendu Adhikari's claim of ‘suspicious' device installation by alleged Kashmiris
Kolkata The Baruipur police on Thursday (April 24, 2025) refuted allegations made by Leader of the Opposition in the West Bengal Assembly, Suvendu Adhikari, regarding the presence of two alleged Kashmiri men in the Baruipur area and the installation of what he described as a 'high-performance wireless network bridge' on the rooftop of their residence. Mr. Adhikari, in a social media post earlier in the day, claimed that the individuals had installed a NanoBeam 2AC device, a compact wireless bridge used for long-distance internet connectivity. He also shared their residential address and expressed concerns over the device, suggesting it could be of suspicious nature. Mr. Palash Chandra Dhali (IPS); Superintendent Of Police; Baruipur Police District, firstly I appreciate that you were prompt enough to respond after my X Post regarding two individuals staying at Baruipur. I listened to the Press Conference where you were providing updates… — Suvendu Adhikari (@SuvenduWB) April 24, 2025 The police, following verification, stated that the individuals in question were not from Jammu and Kashmir but from Madhya Pradesh and had been residing in a rented accommodation in Baruipur for the past year. The device in question, officials said, was a standard JioFiber internet router and no suspicious materials or activities were found during inspection. 'It is unfortunate that certain individuals choose to disseminate inaccurate and potentially inciteful information via social media, instead of alerting appropriate State or Central agencies,' the Baruipur police said in a statement posted online. The statement further urged citizens not to share unverified information on social media and warned that 'public insinuation against any individual without verifying the facts is legally punishable.' Speaking to the media, Palash Chandra Dhali, Superintendent of Police, Baruipur, said that both individuals had come to Kolkata around a year ago. 'One is a civil engineer and the other a computer engineer. They are in the city to start a business. The device they installed was solely for internet access,' Mr. Dhali said. The development comes at a time when several incidents of alleged harassment and targeting of Kashmiri residents have been reported across different parts of the country, following the terror attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir, on April 22 that claimed the lives of over 26 tourists, including three from West Bengal. Later in the day, Mr. Adhikari issued a counter-response on social media, stating that if the police were confident about the individuals' identities and intentions, their details should be made public. 'Since you are willing to give a clean chit to them, why didn't you make them attend the press conference and reveal their identities so that the public would be assured and suspicions could be laid to rest?' he wrote. The police have not responded further to Mr. Adhikari's remarks at the time of publication.
