Replica Columbus flagship arrives in Jersey
A replica of Christopher Columbus's flagship is in Jersey for the first time and has opened its decks to the public. The Nao Santa María arrived at Albert Pier is visiting the island and is due to continue to several ports in the UK, France, Spain and the Netherlands as part of a European tour. The Nao Victoria Foundation, which built the ship in 2018, said it was a "faithful, full-scale historical reproduction", with four masts, five sails, and five decks. It said the ship sailed "as a floating museum of its own story and Spanish maritime heritage". The ship, which was constructed in Spain, weighs about 180 tonnes, is 29m (95ft) long, and 8m (26ft) wide. "During its stay in Jersey, visitors will be able to board the ship and explore its decks to learn more about this famous 1492 flagship of Christopher Columbus," the foundation said. "Its features, rigging, navigation, the stories it tells, and how the crew lived on board under harsh conditions." The original Santa María was the largest of the three small ships used by Christopher Columbus in his first expedition across the Atlantic Ocean in 1492. It sank on the return leg of the journey, after running aground off the north coast of Haiti on Christmas Day the same year. The Nao Santa María is open until 20:30 BST on Sunday. A replica of Christopher Columbus' ship will dock in London later this month
Maritime enthusiasts might remember the Galeón Andalucía, the replica 17th century warship that sailed into London last summer. If you liked that, we have good news, because another mighty vessel is coming to the city this month. The Galeón Andalucía's sister ship, which happens to be a replica of the boat sailed on by Christopher Columbus, will voyage to the UK capital this May, dropping anchor at St Katharine Docks for more than a week. The 93ft Nao Santa Maria will sail into the city on May 28 (weather permitting), before opening its gangways to visitors from May 29 until June 8. The mighty ship will offer a peak into 15th century maritime life, as it will recreate the vessel used on the coloniser's 1492 voyage. Visitors will be able to explore the authentic wooden decks, peek into the captain's quarters and get an insight into the naval architecture, navigation techniques and conditions that faced sailors at that time. The Nao Santa Maria is operated by the Nao Victoria Foundation and was first launched in 2018. The construction of the vessel involved nearly a hundred professionals from various disciplines: shipwrights, ropemakers, and other maritime craftsmen, alongside historians and engineers who worked on planning the initial designs for the replica and the design of the ship's shapes and measurements.

Spanish galleon Santa Maria to fire cannon salute during Isle of Wight visit
The historic galleon Nao Santa Maria will sail from Spain to the Isle of Wight next month to fire a four-cannon salute as part of the Armada Coast 1588 commemorations. Taking place on May 21, the event includes the opening of the Coastal and Downs Armada 1588 Heritage Trail by Ventnor Town Council, a ceremonial flag-raising, enactments, bell-ringing, and live sea shanties and stories at The Spyglass Inn. The replica galleon will fire its salute from 2–3pm between St Lawrence and Bonchurch before docking at Cowes until May 26. Supported by Spain's Fundacion Nao Victoria, this event marks the launch of a major heritage project highlighting the Island's overlooked role in the Spanish Armada.
