Louth captain Sam Mulroy began his acceptance speech by paying a touching tribute to Louth nurse and footballer Marie Claire Rodgers following her sudden passing at the end of April. Marie Claire (24) passed away following a short illness in Sydney on April 28. The talented footballer and nurse was visiting her sister Heather and cousin Roisin in Australia before falling ill. During her funeral mass, Parish Priest Fr Paddy Rushe joked that Meath "haven't a chance" in the Leinster final on Sunday as "Marie Claire will be bringing Louth to victory" and played club football with Naomh Fionnbarra. And after Louth's epic Leinster Final victory, captain Sam Mulroy began proceedings by paying tribute to Marie Claire. "Firstly, before I start congratulating or thanking anyone I just want to remember a special lady from Louth, Mary Claire Rodgers," he said. "Who lost her life over the last number of weeks so it has been a very sad time in Louth. So, for all of her friends and family and for the people of Louth, can we get a bualadh bos for her please. " Louth won their first Leinster title in the most dramatic of fashion as they beat Meath in a 3-14 to 1-18 thriller in Croke Park on Sunday. Over 65,000 packed into the Jones' Road venue in what was the first Leinster final not involving Dublin since 2010.

More info Funeral details have been announced for a young Irish nurse from Co Louth who died suddenly in Australia after a short illness. Marie Claire Rogers, 24, passed away in a Sydney hospital on Monday, April 28. Ms Rogers arrived in Australia several days before her passing to visit her sister Heather, who has been on a year's break there with friends. Friends say she wasn't feeling well on Friday, April 25, and went to see the doctor. She was immediately taken into hospital for urgent treatment but her condition seriously deteriorated over the weekend and she sadly died. Ms Rogers' parents, Andrew and Mary, had been travelling to see her but did not arrive before she passed away. The 24-year-old's family have announced that her funeral mass will be held at Saint Columcille's Church in Togher at 12 noon on Saturday, with burial afterwards in Clonmore Cemetery. She will repose at Connor's Funeral Home, Dunleer (A92 V38H) from 2pm until 8pm on Thursday and Friday and the family have asked that any donations be made to the Kevin Bell Repatriation Trust. Tributes have continued to pour in for the popular young nurse, who played Gaelic football with her local Naomh Fionnbarra club, where her dad is also a prominent ladies football referee. In an emotional tribute shared online, a close pal said: "My sincerest condolences to the Rogers family at this difficult time. The sudden passing of Marie Claire has been such a shock. "Marie Claire was one of the kindest, most gentle souls who brought so much light into the lives of anyone she knew. I had the honour of knowing her during our time together in Greenhills. She will be greatly missed by all who knew her. "Sending my thoughts to her family, boyfriend and all her friends. You will never be forgotten Marie Claire." Another person said: "My deepest sympathies to Marie Claire's family, friends and loved ones. Marie Claire had the ability to light up any room she ever walked into. It was such an honour knowing you, a truly beautiful person inside and out. May you rest easy MC." While a former classmate added: "I was truly heartbroken and shocked to hear of Marie Claire's untimely and sudden passing. Marie Claire was such a down to earth girl who played an integral part of my many great school moments in Greenhills. "I'll always remember the laughs and memories we shared and will be forever grateful for our friendship. The good times we had together are ones in which I will always cherish and fondly remember." A fundraiser has been launched for Ms Rogers to help support the travel costs to Australia for her family and boyfriend to accompany her on her 'final journey home', as well as to help with other unexpected expenses. Her funeral mass took place this morning at Saint Columcille's Church, in READ MORE IN IRISH NEWS Attendees heard about how Marie Claire had been living her life to the fullest in her final two weeks. Gifts brought to the altar included a GAA jersey, Fake tan and some high heels were also brought up, showing her love for dancing and going out with friends. During the mass, Parish Priest Fr Paddy Rushe said there were "no words that can carry the weight of this moment". 'INFECTIOUS ENERGY' Marie Claire's older sister, Grace, paid a touching tribute to her. She said: "Marie Claire had a smile that could light up any room, she had an infectious energy that inspired everyone around her, she wore her heart on her sleeve and it was open to everyone. 'This was evident in the love she shared with the love of her life Paraic. Paraic entered our lives two years ago and the impact he made on Marie Claire and our family can't be overstated. 'Every time he walked into our kitchen Marie Claire's eyes lit up. She loved nothing more than walking on the beach with him.' She added that her family found comfort in knowing that her final moments were spent with her favourite people - her best friends Heather and Roisin. She said: 'What an amazing two weeks they had. From a hot air balloon, to a sky dive to snorkelling in the great barrier reef, she experienced more things in those two weeks with her best friends than most people experience in a lifetime.' Fundraiser for Irish nurse who died suddenly on holiday in Australia passes €128k

A FUNDRAISER launched to support the family of an Irish nurse who died suddenly while on holiday in Australia has reaced more than €128k. Louth native Marie Claire Rogers died in Sydney on Monday, April 28, 'after a short illness", her family has confirmed. The 24-year-old, of Clonmor in Togher, was visiting her sister when she became unwell. She died days later in hospital. A fundraising page which was set up to help with the costs of bringing her body home to Ireland has already raised more than than €128k. 'As many of you know, our beloved Marie Claire Rogers tragically passed away unexpectedly while on holiday in Australia,' the page states. 'This gofundme page has been created for those who would like to support with travel costs for her family and boyfriend as they accompany Marie Claire on her final journey home to Ireland, and help them navigate the many unexpected challenges that come with such an overwhelming loss.' They added: 'On behalf of the family, they would like to sincerely thank everyone for the incredible love and support they have received.' Tributes have flooded in for Ms Rogers, who was popular figure among the ladies GFA scene in Louth. She played Gaelic football with her local Naomh Fionnbarra club, who posted a heartfelt tribute stating: 'Our club and community are beyond shocked and saddened at the sudden passing of our cherished club member and friend, Marie Claire Rogers in Sydney, Australia. 'As her many friends, teammates, and colleagues come to terms with the devastating news, we offer our heartfelt sympathies and condolences to the extended Rogers and Osborne families both at home and abroad.' Local club Dreadnots GFC, have also paid their respects to the young sportswoman. "We extend our heartfelt condolences to Andrew, Mary, Frances, Grace, Heather, the Roger's and Osborne families and to all at Naomh Fionnbarra on the sudden passing of Marie Claire," they said in a statement. "Marie Claire was a fantastic footballer who we were fortunate enough to have shared a field with as our underage teams amalgamated with Naomh Fionnbarra over the years," they added. "Not only a talented footballer Mariec caire was an amazing girl who will be missed by all who had the pleasure to know her." Colleague Eugene Meehan remembered Ms Rogers as a "compassionate and caring" nurse. "Marie Claire was a much respected and valued member of our nursing team," he said. "She was a warm, caring, compassionate nurse with a vibrant personalty and was extremely well liked by all who worked with her." Ms Rogers leaves behind her mother Mary, father Andrew, sisters Frances, Grace and Heather and her boyfriend Paraic. Funeral details have yet to be confirmed.
