Narathiwat court extends Eda Ezrin's detention for fourth time

KOTA BARU: The Narathiwat Provincial Court today granted a further one-month extension of detention against Malaysian dikir barat singer Eda Ezrin, marking the fourth such extension since her arrest in November last year. A court spokesperson said the decision followed a formal application by the Thai prosecution on May 30. The new remand period starts today and will expire on July 6. The extension also applies to the five other Malaysians detained alongside Eda, including her husband. The six were arrested by Thai police for their alleged involvement in the possession of 6,059 yaba pills - a type of methamphetamine popular in Thailand and neighbouring countries. "Investigations by the Thai prosecutors are still ongoing, and the extended detention is to facilitate further enquiries, as prosecutors consider whether to appeal a previous court decision that acquitted the group of the drug possession charges at other courts, including the High Court," said the spokesperson. In March this year, the Narathiwat Court ruled that there was insufficient evidence to directly link Eda and the others to the narcotics found during a raid in Sungai Golok in November 2024. However, they were each sentenced to six months' jail and fined 4,000 baht (approximately RM520) for drug consumption—a sentence they had effectively served. The fines were later waived. Despite the acquittal, the group has not been released, as the prosecution still retains the right to appeal. Eda's mother, Zaharah Mamat, has publicly voiced her frustration and concern, revealing that she had sold personal belongings—including gold jewellery worth over RM26,000—to help cover mounting legal costs that now exceed RM65,000. The case continues to draw public attention in Malaysia.

Family's hopes crushed over Eda Ezrin's continued detention in Thai jail

KOTA BARU: The family of popular dikir barat singer Eda Ezrin is heartbroken as hopes for her swift release from a Thai prison fade, denying them the chance to celebrate Aidiladha together. Her father, Wan Ismail Wan Yusuf, 52, said the family had actually hoped to reunite with her for Aidiladha. "She often cries and asks us when she will be released. Her body has also grown increasingly thin after more than seven months in Narathiwat Provincial Prison," he said. Wan Ismail was commenting on the extension of her detention, along with her husband and four of their friends. Malaysia celebrates Aidiladha on Saturday. Wan Ismail said the family's high hopes of being together over the weekend have been dashed. "Sad, disappointed, and resigned, all sorts of thoughts crossed my mind when I learned that my daughter's detention had been extended again until next month," he said. The popular dikir barat singer, her husband, and four friends will remain in detention at Narathiwat Central Prison in Thailand until July 6. "Even after next month, we still do not know what her fate will be, as we were informed the case may now be referred to the Supreme Court," Wan Ismail said. "I myself am confused, especially since the Narathiwat Provincial Court's decision on March 6 found my daughter and the others not guilty." According to an online portal, the Narathiwat Provincial Court has approved a fourth request from prosecutors to extend the time to file an appeal against the release of a group charged with possessing 6,059 meth pills. Eda Ezrin, whose full name is Wan Norshaheeda Azlin Wan Ismail, 30; her husband, Mohd Affendi Ahmad, 35; and their friends, Eridieka Mohd Noor, 33; Mohamad Alif Deraman, 33; Nur Aida Mamat, 33; and Zuhaira Nasrin, 26, will remain in custody during this extended period.

Thai court extends detention of Eda Ezrin, husband and four others until July 6

KOTA BARU: Popular dikir barat singer Eda Ezrin, her husband, and four friends will remain in detention at Narathiwat Central Prison in Thailand until July 6. According to Apa Khabar TV, the Narathiwat Provincial Court has approved a fourth application by the prosecution to extend the appeal period concerning the group's release over charges of jointly possessing 6,059 methamphetamine pills. A court spokesperson confirmed that the latest application was submitted on May 30. "This marks the fourth time the court has approved an extension for the prosecution to file an appeal since the group was acquitted on March 6. "Under Thai law, prosecutors are allowed up to four extensions to file an appeal," the spokesperson said. Earlier reports stated that the group was acquitted after a three-day hearing on Feb 11, 13 and 14. The court found them not guilty of jointly possessing methamphetamine pills with intent to sell. However, they continued to be held in custody after prosecutors were granted additional time to decide on filing an appeal.

#SHOWBIZ: Brother, sister-in-law are okay in Narathiwat Prison, says Jaa Suzuran

KUALA LUMPUR: Actor and radio announcer Jaa Suzuran has reported that his brother and sister-in-law, singer Eda Ezrin, are in good health while detained at the Narathiwat Prison in Southern Thailand. Berita Harian today quoted the 31-year-old Jaa, whose real name is Mohamad Faizal Ahmad, as saying that his mother visited the couple during the recent Hari Raya Aidilfitri holidays. Jaa said that his family remains hopeful for their release and return to their home in Kelantan. "My mother and other family members visited them, and they were in good health at that time. However, I don't have current information on their situation," he said. "I sincerely hope this matter is resolved quickly so they can begin a new life. We ask for everyone's prayers. My entire family wishes them the best, and God willing, they will be well," he added. In March, the Narathiwat Provincial Court acquitted the group of possessing 6,059 Yaba pills but convicted them of drug use. Eda Ezrin, or Wan Norshaheeda Azlin Wan Ismail, and five other Malaysians, including her husband, Mohd Affendi Ahmad, 35, were apprehended during an anti-drug operation in Sungai Golok on November 1 of last year. They admitted to drug use but denied the possession charges. The court sentenced them to six months in jail and fined them 4,000 baht each, but these penalties were waived due to the fact that they had already served more than four months in pre-trial detention. The other Malaysians involved are Mohamad Alif Deraman, 33; Nur Aida Mamat, 33; Erdeka Mohd Noor, 33; and Zuhaira Nasrin, 26. Erdeka and Zuhaira also faced charges of illegal entry and overstaying in Thailand. Despite the acquittal on the drug possession charge on March 6th, the prosecution successfully sought a one-month extension of their detention, effective from April 6th, to gather further evidence.

Thai court extends detention of Eda Ezrin and 5 others

KOTA BARU: The Narathiwat Provincial Court today granted the Thai prosecution's appeal to further extend the detention of Malaysian dikir barat singer Eda Ezrin and five others, including her husband, for an additional month. The extension was approved at 10.30am (Thai time), in the presence of legal representatives for all six individuals. According to a court spokesperson, the new detention period begins today and will run until June 6. "The court allowed the additional detention after the prosecution submitted a request last Friday (May 2). This is the third extension granted to the Thai prosecution," the spokesperson said. He said that the extended detention was necessary to allow investigators more time to gather evidence in the case, which involves 6,059 yaba pills allegedly linked to the group. The spokesperson added that the families of the detainees were informed of the court's decision by one of the lawyers around midday. On March 6, Eda Ezrin and the five others were acquitted of possessing 6,059 yaba pills in Sungai Golok on Nov 1 last year, following a brief 30-minute hearing before a two-judge panel at the Narathiwat Provincial Court. However, they were convicted on a separate charge of drug consumption and sentenced to six months' imprisonment and fined 4,000 baht (about RM526) each. The court ruled that the prison sentences need not be served as the six had already spent over four months in custody, and it also waived the fines.
