Brain Cancer Canada Awards $68,000 Research Grant for Clinical Trial of Anti-Cancer Vaccine Targeting DIPG, the Most Aggressive Pediatric Brain Cancer

TORONTO, May 17, 2025 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — Today, on DIPG Awareness Day, Brain Cancer Canada is pleased to award $68,000 for an innovative research initiative led by Dr. Aru Narendran, MD, PhD, and Dr. Patrick Sipila, PhD, at The University of Calgary and Alberta Children's Hospital. The project, 'Biological Correlative Studies to Improve Current Outcomes of Diffuse Intrinsic Pontine Glioma (DIPG) and High-Risk Brain Tumours with a Neoantigen-Based Anti-Cancer Vaccine in Clinical Trial,' focuses on advancing a novel immunotherapy approach for some of the most aggressive childhood brain cancers. DIPG is a devastating pediatric brain tumour, with fewer than 10% of children surviving two years post-diagnosis. As DIPG progresses, it severely impacts essential brain functions, making it increasingly difficult for children to see, walk, and even breathe. Current treatment options, including radiation therapy and chemotherapy, offer only temporary or limited benefit, and survival rates have remained largely unchanged for decades, despite broader advances in cancer research. In response to this urgent need, Dr. Narendran and Dr. Sipila's team are investigating a new anti-cancer vaccine designed to train a patient's immune system to recognize and eliminate tumour cells. Their research aims to validate the safety, activity, and potential clinical applications of this neoantigen-based immunotherapy. By providing critical biological insights into the vaccine's effectiveness, the project seeks to accelerate the development of promising new treatment options for children affected by DIPG and other high-risk brain tumours. Dr. Narendran explains, 'Every advancement in DIPG research brings renewed hope for the entire brain cancer community. By discovering new and effective treatments, we aim to prove that even the toughest human challenges can be overcome through compassion, collaboration, and innovation. The progress we make today paves the way for tomorrow's cures, where no child's future is cut short by a brain cancer.' This groundbreaking work represents an important step toward improving survival outcomes and offering renewed hope to families impacted by these devastating diagnoses. Brain Cancer Canada acknowledges the tremendous contributions of grassroots fundraisers including Trinity's Army, the $9 Challenge, and Dr. Surya's 8th Charity Raffle that have made this award possible. Immensely grateful for the support, Dr. Narendran explains the critical need for funding, 'Philanthropic organizations such as the Brain Cancer Canada give true hope for children fighting brain cancer, granting the crucial support needed to advance translational research and the preparation of innovative treatment protocols for the future. By funding collaborative efforts and high-risk, high-reward projects, your giving ensures that scientists and physicians continue to work to discover safer, more effective novel treatments for our patients.' In recognition of DIPG Day, Brain Cancer Canada is proud to have The Peace Bridge connecting Canada and the U.S., Cabot Tower on Signal Hill in St. John's, NL, and the CN Tower Toronto, ON, illuminated in yellow. The lighting serves as a powerful symbol of awareness and solidarity in the fight against DIPG. This announcement is part of a series of six grants announced during Brain Cancer Awareness Month. Brain Cancer Canada remains committed to driving forward innovative solutions and pursuing hope for those affected by brain cancer by investing in critically needed research. About Brain Cancer Canada Brain Cancer Canada is a national charity dedicated to improving the lives of those affected by primary malignant brain tumours by funding research, advocating for effective treatment options, and investing in neurosurgical technologies. 3 Kerala HC judges, families narrowly escape Pahalgam terror attack

Three Kerala High Court judges — Anil K Narendran, G Girish, and PG Ajithkumar — along with their families, had a narrow escape from the terror attack in Jammu and Kashmir's Pahalgam on Tuesday. The group, comprising eight members, had been vacationing in Jammu and Kashmir since April 17. They visited several locations in the region and arrived in Pahalgam on Monday, The Hindu reported. After spending the day sightseeing and exploring prominent tourist attractions, they decided to depart Pahalgam just a few hours before the terror attack that claimed 26 lives and injured many others. According to Justice Narendran, the group left Pahalgam at around 9:30 am on April 22. "...I insisted on returning to Srinagar today itself to take a boat ride in Dal Lake as I had visited the area earlier, and we reached Srinagar safely,' Justice Narendran told The Hindu. Justice Narendran added that they encountered a hotel guest in Srinagar who had narrowly escaped the incident and was visibly shaken. Justice Ajithkumar said the group reached Srinagar around 2 pm, shortly after the attack occurred, and they were preparing to return to Kerala. Pahalgam terror attack The attack, which occurred at Baisaran meadow, was one of the deadliest attacks in the region since the 2019 Pulwama strike. The Resistance Front, a shadow group linked to the banned Pakistan-based Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT), reportedly claimed responsibility for the attack. PM Modi condemned the attack as a "heinous act", assuring that "those behind this heinous act will be brought to justice". Union Home Minister Amit Shah travelled to Srinagar and then to the Baisaran meadow, the site of the attack. Shah paid tribute to the victims by laying wreaths and met with the families of those killed and survivors. He chaired a security review meeting in Srinagar involving all concerned agencies to coordinate the ongoing response and investigation. Security forces, including the Indian Army's Chinar Corps, launched extensive search operations in the area to track down the terrorists involved. The National Investigation Agency (NIA) has also deployed a team to assist local police in the probe. The attack drew international condemnation, with leaders including US President Donald Trump, Russian President Vladimir Putin, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, and UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer expressing solidarity with India and condemning the violence against civilians.

Three Kerala high court judges narrowly escape Pahalgam terror attack

NEW DELHI: Three Kerala high court judges narrowly escaped the Pahalgam attack, in which over 28 people tourists lost their lives, during their visit to Jammu and Kashmir. The vacationing group comprised Justices Anil K. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Narendran, G. Girish and P. G. Ajithkumar, who were accompanied by their family members in their trip to Jammu and Kashmir. Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan also confirmed and said, "Kerala High Court judges, Justices Anil K Narendran, P G Ajithkumar and G Girish, as well as MLAs M Mukesh, K P A Majeed, T Siddique and K Ansalan were in Srinagar, but safe." The CM said that the judges were expected to return to Kerala on Wednesday. The attack is the deadliest terrorist act in the valley since the 2019 Pulwama strike. The incident took place at Baisaran meadow, situated 7 km away from Pahalgam, a tourist destination known for its tranquil atmosphere and scenic landscapes. Witness accounts reveal that six foreign militants, wearing military uniforms, conducted a targeted assault based on religious identity. The perpetrators reportedly asked people to state their names and demonstrate knowledge of Islamic verses before shooting them at close range. The incident unfolded at 1.30 pm whilst visitors were spending time in the grassland, which is encompassed by snow-topped peaks and pine trees. Despite robust security measures, including multiple checkpoints and armed personnel patrolling the area, the assailants successfully infiltrated the tourist location and created devastation. In response, security personnel have initiated an extensive search operation to locate the militants responsible for the attack. "The search operation is currently in progress, with all efforts focused on bringing the attackers to justice," the Indian army's Chinar Corps said in a statement overnight.
