Row over TMC MLA's remarks on Operation Sindoor; party distances itself

Trinamool Congress (TMC) MLA Narendranath Chakraborty has sparked a controversy by allegedly saying that Operation Sindoor was '…warmongering initiated by the BJP.' The BJP minority cell filed an FIR against Chakraborty, who represents the Pandabeswar seat in Paschim Bardhaman district, for his remarks, and alleged that the TMC legislator belittled the valour of the armed forces. TMC spokesperson Kunal Ghosh said Chakaraborty's remarks are 'his personal statements' and that the ruling party 'does not support it.' Despite repeated attempts to contact him, Chakraborty was unavailable for comment. BJP state President Sukanta Majumdar took to X to hit out at Chakraborty over his comments, saying, 'The outrageous and condemnable remarks made by Pandabeswar's TMC MLA Narendranath Chakraborty clearly reveals the extent to which the Trinamool Congress is trying to spread anti-national venom in West Bengal.' A BJP leader from the Asansol belt, Jitendra Tiwari, said, 'If he (Chakraborty) is so sympathetic towards Pakistan, it's better for him to go there, buy land and stay there. If anyone else had said anything similar to his remarks, by now the TMC would have ensured that an FIR is registered. But when it is their leader, there is no action.' The controversy broke out after a video of Chakraborty's purported remarks surfaced on social media. Leader of Opposition Suvendu Adhikari said in a post on X, 'This recent speech by Narendranath Chakraborty, TMC MLA… raises serious questions that cannot be ignored. Such statements demand immediate scrutiny.' 'We do not support the statement; it is his(Chakraborty's) personal remark. Our CM Mamata Banerjee and senior leader Abhishek Banerjee have made it clear that the TMC will not give any political statement on Operation Sindoor, nor will it participate in any debate or criticism concerning Operation Sindoor, in the interest of the nation, But we see BJP leaders are looking to gain political benefits…' Sweety Kumari reports from West Bengal for The Indian Express. Kolkata: Major controversy erupted over comments of Trinamool Pandabeswar MLA Narendranath Chakraborty 's on ' Operation SIndoor '. The TMC MLA called "Op Sindoor as India's gameplan and drama in coordination with Pakistan", which was scripted. Meanwhile, BJP has gone on an all-out attack against the MLA with Leader of Opposition (LoP) Suvendu Adhikari and BJP state President Sukanta Majumdar attacking the ruling party lawmaker. BJP Minority cell has lodged a complaint in Kulti Police Station against Chakraborty. The Pandabeswar MLA of Trinamool Congress , during a public rally, said, 'How did Sindoor Khela have been started by the BJP government! It is a war-war game. There has been a settlement done with Pakistan.' by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Villa For Sale in Dubai Might Surprise You Villas in Dubai | Search ads Learn More Undo 'If you have gone to Kashmir, you must have seen an army standing with guns at every ten feet distance,' the Trinamool MLA said, adding, 'It is not only Pahalgam but in every tourist spot in Kashmir, heavy security arrangements are witnessed. Barbed wires can be seen as road blockades. But a few days before the terror attack in Pahalgam, all forces were removed. It is a drama,' the MLA alleged. 'The terrorists have killed so many people. What was said before killing? Are you Hindu, do you wear sindoor or can you read Kalma ? If they said 'no', came 'boom'…They (the Centre) could not find the terrorists as it is a game plan and they played a Hindutva game, a script which was enacted. Everything was fitting,' Narendranath Chakrabarty said. Chakraborty is also District President of Trinamool's Paschim Bardhaman Organizational District. Live Events 'The terrorists could not be traced. They will never be found. It is a game plan,' the MLA said. BJP Minority cell has lodged a complaint in Kulti Police Station against Narendranath Chakraborty LoP Suvendu Adhikari said the lawmaker should be taken into custody by NIA and quizzed. Responding to Pandabeswar Trinamool MLA's comments, Adhikari said, 'When the Pandabeswar MLA knows everything about Operation Sindoor, Chakraborty should be summoned by the NIA. He should be kept in custody and interrogated. The Pandabeswar MLA was close to Mamata Banerjee . He is an international expert now." Adhikari took to the X Handle and said, '…If an elected representative like Chakraborty has prior knowledge or insights into such a heinous act, it is imperative that the NIA take him into custody for questioning to uncover the source and credibility of his information.' 'The outrageous and condemnable remark made by Pandabeswar's TMC MLA Narendranath Chakraborty clearly reveals the extent to which the Trinamool Congress is trying to spread anti-national venom in West Bengal. Wearing the party's scarf and standing on a public stage with the symbol, he shamelessly claimed that 'India had a fitting with Pakistan'! This statement is not just objectionable—it is blatantly anti-national. Sadly, he is not the first. Several other TMC leaders, including the failed Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee herself, have made indecent and disgraceful remarks about 'Operation Sindoor,' BJP State President Sukanta Majumdar posted in his X Handle.

'Staged drama': TMC MLA's remark on Operation Sindoor triggers row; BJP seeks probe

TMC MLA Narendranath Chakraborty NEW DELHI: Trinamool Congress (TMC) MLA Narendranath Chakraborty has courted controversy by allegedly calling Operation Sindoor "a staged drama," and accused Prime Minister Narendra Modi of "playing with the emotions of patriotic people." In a purported video clip which went viral on social media on Friday, Chakraborty is seen saying to an audience that "the way they ( BJP ) have started this Sindoor Khela (game of vermilion), it seems that the entire episode is a staged drama. This warmongering by the BJP is nothing but a game. In Operation Sindoor, PM Modi has played with the emotions of patriotic people, including women." — SuvenduWB (@SuvenduWB) However, he later claimed his comment was "twisted and misinterpreted with an ulterior political motive." "I have high regard for our security forces, including the Indian army. Part of my speech was being circulated and twisted for an ulterior political motive to demean me and my party. As a citizen of this country, I have always been opposed to the sponsoring of terror by Pakistan and have supported the way our forces guard our frontiers," the Pandabeswar legislator told news agency PTI. 'His personal remark; we don't endorse it': TMC Senior TMC leader and West Bengal minister Chandrima Bhattacharya described Chakraborty's comment as a "personal" one, and said the party does not endorse such a remark. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like [Click Here] - 2025 Top Trending Search - Local network access Esseps Learn More Undo "Our chairperson (West Bengal chief minister) Mamata Banerjee , and national general secretary Abhishek Banerjee, have already articulated the party's stand against terror and unequivocally supported our armed forces during Operation Sindoor. We are all united in this issue," Bhattacharya asserted. BJP demands NIA probe On the other hand, leader of opposition in the West Bengal assembly and BJP legislator Suvendu Adhikari demanded that the anti-terror National Investigation Agency conduct a probe to investigate if Chakraborty had "links with anti-India forces." Separately, a leader of the BJP's minority cell filed an FIR against the Trinamool member. In the FIR, the opposition party called for action against Chakraborty, alleging he had made an "anti-national statement belittling the valour and sacrifice of armed forces and encouraging Pakistan-sponsored terrorists to destabilise India". Operation Sindoor, conducted on May 7, was India's retaliatory strike on terror camps in Pakistan after the April 22 Pahalgam attack in which 26 people, mostly tourists, were killed in Jammu and Kashmir.

'Disgraceful': BJP Slams TMC MLA For Calling Operation Sindoor 'Scripted Drama'

Last Updated: TMC MLA Narendranath Chakraborty sparked a row by calling India's Operation Sindoor against terror camps in Pakistan a "scripted drama". TMC MLA Narendranath Chakraborty sparked a row by calling India's Operation Sindoor against terror infrastructure in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir nothing but a 'scripted drama", drawing the BJP's ire. In a viral video, Chakraborty claimed Operation Sindoor was a staged drama and that the BJP government had held discussions with Pakistan before conducting the May 7 strikes. 'It's all about staging a fake war — a complete act. Everything has been done in coordination with Pakistan," he was heard saying. BJP spokesperson Pradeep Bhandari called Chakraborty's remarks 'disgraceful" and yet another attempt to appease the party's votebank. 'Disgraceful remarks by Pandaveshwar MLA Narendranath Chakraborty — he has claimed that Operation Sindoor was nothing but a scripted drama! TMC can go to any lengths just to appease its vote bank!" he said. The party distanced itself from the comments, saying Guha's remarks reflect his 'personal stance" and do not align with the TMC's views. Chakraborty's remarks came days after West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee downplayed India's Operation Sindoor and called it a 'small skirmish", while her nephew Abhishek Banerjee was travelling abroad as part of India's official delegation to spread the word on Operation Sindoor on a global platform. Banerjee dismissed the military operation, questioning its name, launching personal attacks on the PM, and accusing him of indulging in 'war marketing". Her remarks were seen as a calculated move given the upcoming assembly elections in 2026. India had launched precise strikes at nine terror camps in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK) as part of Operation Sindoor in response to the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack, demolishing key terror hideouts and eliminating over 100 terrorists that were being sheltered by Islamabad.
