Princess Kako, the second daughter of Crown Prince Akishino and Crown Princess Akishino, on Wednesday departed from Narita Airport for a 10-day visit to Brazil. Kako is scheduled to arrive in Sao Paulo on Thursday morning local time. This year marks the 130th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Japan and Brazil. Brazil has the world's largest Japanese community with about 2.7 million people of Japanese descent living in the country. Kako will visit eight cities, participating in commemorative ceremonies in each location and meeting with Japanese-Brazilians. The princess is scheduled to pay a courtesy call on President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva and tour the world heritage site Corcovado in Rio de Janeiro, famous for its Christ the Redeemer statue, before returning to Japan on June 17. The trip is Kako's fourth official overseas visit. © Japan Today/Kyodo

Japan's Narita Airport to build third runway

The expansion of Narita Airport will allow it to accommodate 500,000 landings and take-offs annually by 2029. PHOTO: REUTERS TOKYO – Tokyo's Narita Airport has begun the construction of a third runway to help cope with an explosion in foreign tourist arrivals. The project, which kicked off on May 25 , will allow Narita to accommodate 500,000 landings and take-offs annually by 2029, compared with the 300,000 currently. Narita, located about an hour's train ride from Tokyo, serves as one of the two major international gateways to Tokyo, along with Haneda Airport. The expansion, which will also include lengthening the second runway, will almost double the size of the airport. Airport chief executive Akihiko Tamura said the project will help boost Japan's international competitiveness. 'It is an urgent issue to further enhance the functions of the airport to strengthen the international competitiveness of Japan and the Tokyo metropolitan area, to increase the number of foreign visitors to Japan, and to promote the development of the areas surrounding the airport,' he said at an opening ceremony on May 25 . The record number of tourists descending on Japan every month is infusing energy into the nation's fragile economy, while also causing congestion at popular destinations like Kyoto. The government has set an ambitious target of almost doubling tourists to 60 million annually by 2030. For the first four months of 2025 , Japan welcomed 14.4 million visitors, a rise of 24.5 per cent from a year ago. AFP Join ST's Telegram channel and get the latest breaking news delivered to you.

Narita Airport launches runway expansion to up capacity 60%

Narita Airport in Chiba Prefecture serves as a gateway to Tokyo, alongside the busier Haneda Airport in the capital. (Asahi Shimbun file photo) The construction of new and extended runways at Narita Airport began on May 25 as part of a broader plan to increase the international airport's annual flight capacity by more than 60 percent to 500,000 by 2029. The expansion at Narita Airport, located in Chiba Prefecture just outside Tokyo, aims to accommodate the growing number of visitors to Japan and strengthen its competitiveness against other major Asian airports. As part of the upgrade, the 2,500-meter-long Runway B will be extended another 1,000 meters northward. In addition, a third airstrip—3,500-meter-long Runway C—will be built south of Runway B. Together with the existing 4,000-meter-long Runway A, the airport will operate a three-runway system, making it Japan's second-busiest airport by runway capacity, after Tokyo's Haneda Airport. Currently, Narita handles around 300,000 flights annually. That number is set to rise to 340,000 by October 2025 through operational changes. The ultimate goal is to increase the airport's flight capacity by more than 60 percent by March 2029, reaching 500,000 flights per year once the runway expansion is complete. The total project cost is estimated at 670 billion yen ($4.69 billion), shared between airport operator Narita International Airport Corp. (NAA) and the government. To support the expansion, an additional 1,099 hectares of land is required. As of the end of March, NAA reported that 83 percent of the necessary land had been secured.

Narita Airport eyes completion of 3rd runway by end-March 2029

Narita International Airport on Sunday marked the start of full construction work to expand its capacity, including the addition of a third runway to be completed by the end of March 2029. As a result, the airport in Chiba Prefecture, which services Tokyo, will see the number of its annual landing and takeoff slots jump to 500,000 from the current 300,000. Including slots at Tokyo's Haneda Airport, the combined annual flights at the two main airports serving the capital will reach 1 million. As part of the ¥670-billion project, a 3,500-meter runway will be built while the 2,500-meter Runway B will be extended by 1,000 meters. The total land area of the airport will increase by 1,099 hectares, almost double the current size. The airport operator has secured 83% of the land needed for the expansion and plans to accelerate land acquisition this fiscal year through March 2026. "Global demand for air travel will double in the next 20 years. 'The Asia-Pacific region is growing fastest among all regions,' Narita International Airport President Akihiko Tamura said at a ceremony marking the start of full-scale construction at the airport. "It is urgent that we strengthen our capabilities to boost Japan's and Tokyo's international competitiveness, attract more foreign tourists, and promote development around the airport," he added,
