Rain hit mango crop, for good in Malihabad, damaging in other districts

1 2 Lucknow: The sudden change in weather early Thursday morning did not have much impact on mangoes in Malihabad but other districts reported noticeable loss. "As the thunderstorm was not severe, fruit drop was minimal in Malihabad. The light showers will help the fruit not only gain in size but also ripen at least a week early," said Upendra Singh, general secretary of Awadh Aam Utpadak Bagwani Samiti, a group of mango growers from Malihabad. He further said in fruit belts in Unnao, Sitapur, Hardoi and Barabanki, there was considerable loss of crops. A mango orchardist Naseeb Khan said: "At this stage, when mangoes are developing in shape and size, farmers provide frequent irrigation to help fruits ripen and attain the optimum size. Light showers on Thursday would do that naturally for mangoes in Malihabad." This is the second time since April that untimely rain has had a positive impact on the mango crop in Malihabad. The sudden and light rain in the first quarter of April, when mangoes were only an inch long and had just set on trees, also had the same impact on the fruit. As a result, the fruit size was better this time. "After the fruit gets set and starts assuming shape, it needs water to gain in size. Malihabad produces Dussehri, Langda, Lucknauva Safeda and Chausa. Dussehri is the earliest ripening variety, followed by Langda, Lucknauva Safeda and Chausa. Malihabad bears a good mango crop every alternate year. This year, the trees had bumper flowering. "But it was the sudden rise in temperature at the end of Feb and in March that destroyed a lot of flowers," said Naseeb Khan. Mangoes are very sensitive to changes in weather while flowering. Weather conditions affect the emergence of panicles (baur), which is the first stage of the crop and starts in Jan. The fruit starts setting in by mid-March and by the end of May gain a certain size. While Dussehris start ripening naturally by May end or the start of June, other varieties do so by the end of June.

Abu Dhabi to be Afghanistan cricket's second home after signing 5-year deal

Afghanistan Cricket Board (ACB) and the Abu Dhabi Cricket and Sports Hub (ADCSH) have signed a five-year 'destination support agreement,' designating Abu Dhabi as the UAE host for every ACB training camp and all Afghanistan A and national age-group competitions, as per a report by ESPNcricinfo. As a potential subsequent stage in the agreement, which extends until 2029, the ACB and Emirates Cricket Board (ECB) will collaborate for Afghanistan to utilise the facilities in the UAE for conducting senior men's bilateral matches as well. Matt Boucher, CEO of ADCSH, announced that Abu Dhabi will continue to host the Afghanistan cricket team. This agreement strengthens ADCSH's commitment to fostering global sporting talent and leveraging its facilities for social good. "Our facilities have already welcomed the world's best players, and this agreement strengthens our strong commitment to nurturing global sporting and cricket talent and leveraging its capacity to be a force for societal good. We've loved hosting Afghanistan over the last couple of years and are pleased we can confirm Abu Dhabi as their second home," as quoted by ESPNcricinfo. ACB chief executive Naseeb Khan said, "All the premium facilities are available." He also stated that focusing on Abu Dhabi as a training base and home for youth cricket will help elevate Afghanistan's sporting achievements and create a strong future for cricket in the country. "The opportunity to now focus on Abu Dhabi as our training base and our home for age-group participation will allow us to elevate Afghanistan's sporting success and build a strong national future for the game of cricket in our country." The senior Afghanistan men's team has welcomed visiting teams at 'home venues' in India — Dehradun, Lucknow, and Greater Noida — as well as in the UAE. Abu Dhabi has previously served as the venue for three of Afghanistan's Test matches, two against Zimbabwe in March 2021 and one against Ireland in February 2024. They have also hosted teams for ODIs and T20Is throughout India and the UAE.

Ireland scrap home series against Afghanistan over fund crunch

Ireland have cancelled a multi-format series against Afghanistan this year due to financial reasons, but the Afghan board is hopeful it will be played next year. West Indies will play six limited-overs matches in Ireland in May-June before England arrive in September for a three-match Twenty20 series. Ireland were then scheduled to host Afghanistan for one Test, three one-day internationals and three T20s in August. "One planned series that won't go ahead for financial reasons is against Afghanistan," Cricket Ireland chief executive Warren Deutrom said after announcing the team's summer schedule on Tuesday. "This decision is part of our management of short-term budgetary constraints, as well as our requirement to comply with the Board's mandate to deliver balanced investment across the organisation's strategic objectives." Cricket Ireland was interested in staging the series next year, the Afghanistan Cricket Board (ACB) said on Wednesday. "While we acknowledge their reasons, this would have been a valuable opportunity for players from both countries," ACB chief executive Naseeb Khan said. "We are in discussions with Cricket Ireland to explore suitable options for rescheduling the series and will work collaboratively to find a mutually convenient window."
