Local media outlet Nasha Niva said the release was possible following U.S. special envoy Keith Kellogg's visit to Belarus, without giving details. A court in Belarus sentenced Tsikhanouski in 2021 to 18 years in jail after he was arrested during an attempt to run for president against incumbent Alexander Lukashenko. Tsikhanouski is now in Lithuania's capital Vilnius, a spokesperson for his wife said. A total of 14 prisoners were released, the spokesperson added. "We're not done," Tsikhanouskaya said, calling for the release of a further 1,150 prisoners. REUTERS Join ST's Telegram channel and get the latest breaking news delivered to you.

Ukraine's Foreign Ministry calls Lukashenko a "cockroach" for insulting Zelenskyy

Ukrainian Foreign Ministry spokesman Heorhii Tykhyi called self-proclaimed Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko a "cockroach" after he referred to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy as a "louse". Source: Tykhyi on social media X (Twitter), Lukashenko quoted by Nasha Niva Details: On 14 March, Lukashenko spoke about Zelenskyy on Russia 1 TV channel: "Volodia [Zelenskyy - ed.] was like a son to me, but he acted like a louse". In response, Tykhyi wrote on Saturday: "Insults to the head of the Ukrainian state are unacceptable, especially from an accomplice in the crime of aggression against Ukraine. In addition, the transition to the field of entomology will definitely not benefit the cockroach." Background: This is not the first time Lukashenko has called the Ukrainian president names. In March 2023, he said that Ukraine had challenged Belarus with the "sabotage" of the A-50 radar plane at the Machulishchy airfield, and he called Zelenskyy a "louse" for it. Belarusian leader's dog urinates at polling station where its owner voted

The dog of Belarusian self-proclaimed president Alexander Lukashenko has urinated at the polling station where its owner cast his vote. Source: European Pravda Details: On 26 January, Lukashenko arrived at the polling station with his spitz Umka. The dog urinated on the wall at the entrance. This moment was captured on a broadcast by Belarusian channels. Belarusian newspaper Nasha Niva highlighted that as of 1 January 2025, Belarus has enacted a law on responsible treatment of animals. According to this legislation, pets – excluding guide dogs – are prohibited from entering shops, healthcare facilities, and educational institutions. The polling station where Lukashenko voted is located within a physical education university. Background: Belarus will hold so-called presidential elections on 26 January, with self-proclaimed Belarusian president Alexander Lukashenko poised to secure a seventh term. EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas called the presidential "elections" in Belarus an affront to democracy and does not recognise the legitimacy of Alexander Lukashenko. Lukashenko said that he does not care whether the West recognises the presidential "elections" taking place on 26 January. Support UP or become our patron!
