Indian wine country on the rise as award-winning vineyards draw tourists and domestic fans

At Nashik International Airport, there are so many posters advertising vineyards and wine tastings, you could be forgiven for thinking you have landed in California's wine country rather than India's west, 160km (100 miles) north of Mumbai. Yet in the past two decades, Indian wine production has become a thing, and Nashik is its epicentre. The greater wine industry is taking notice: Sula Vineyards, India's leading winemaker, won the gold medal for cabernet sauvignon at the Global Wine Masters in May 2024, the highest honour an Indian bottling has received at that annual competition. A viognier from Grover Zampa, which has vineyards in Nashik, and Bengaluru in India's south, was named best of show at January's Wine and Spirits Wholesalers of America competition. Sula Vineyards in Nashik is the largest Indian wine producer, making more than half of all wine consumed in India. Proposed flyover at choke point Dahava Mile to relieve highway traffic near Nashik airport

Nashik: Air travellers using Nashik Airport, especially those on tight schedules, often face delays due to traffic congestion on the Mumbai-Agra highway . One major choke point has been the Dahava Mile junction, a critical access point for commuters travelling to and from the airport. The construction of a new flyover at this junction is expected to significantly ease traffic and benefit frequent flyers. Located about 20 km from the city, Nashik Airport is accessible only via the Mumbai-Agra highway, requiring commuters to pass through the busy Dahava Mile junction. While the National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) has already built several flyovers along the highway in Nashik to ensure smoother traffic flow, the Dahava Mile junction remained a bottleneck until now. Travellers from Pimpalgaon heading to the airport often encounter heavy traffic while trying to cross the highway. Similarly, those arriving at the airport and heading into the city must navigate congested junctions, causing frustrating delays. Recognizing the urgency, the NHAI has initiated construction of a 1,120-metre-long flyover at the junction, with a projected cost of Rs45 crore. Work has already begun, starting with the construction of a service road to help divert traffic once the main flyover work begins. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Google Brain Co-Founder Andrew Ng, Recommends: Read These 5 Books And Turn Your Life Around Blinkist: Andrew Ng's Reading List Undo "Most businessmen flying by air have an hourly schedule. If an issue like traffic congestion disrupts their schedule, it is very frustrating," said Urvishbhai Patel, an industrialist from Nashik and former vice president of the Kirana Wholesalers Association. "It is good that a flyover is being constructed there. Those taking the road to the airport from the junction or arriving from the airport will no longer have to deal with the continuous flow of heavy vehicles." Manish Rawal, vice-president of the Nashik Industries & Manufacturers' Association (NIMA) and chairman of its aviation committee, echoed the sentiment. "The proposed flyover at Dahava Mile junction will definitely ease traffic congestion on the highway and smoothen the traffic from Nashik Airport towards the city via the junction," he said. He noted that traffic often used to build up at Dahava Mile following aircraft arrivals, but the flyover would provide relief in all directions.
