New drop-off rules at BNA spark backlash from rideshare drivers and travelers

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WKRN) — Starting Tuesday, rideshare users heading to the Nashville International Airport should plan to leave at least 10 minutes earlier. BNA now requires rideshare drivers to drop off and pick up in the same location — at the Ground Transportation Center. 📧 Have breaking news come to you: → Abdul Helmandai has driven for Uber Black in Nashville for three years and is a member of the Tennessee Driver Union. 'They are making a decision without discussing it with the drivers,' Helmandai told News 2. 'I mean, the drivers are the backbone; they are the real ones. If there is no driver, then I can bet there would be no airport.' Helmandai told News 2 that the airport's new policy will slow things down for both drivers and riders. Even before the policy change, Helmandai explained that drivers were already seeing pickup cancellations due to traffic. 'It will take more than an hour to pick up one customer just because drop off and pick up point same place,' Helmandai said. Airport officials said the move is part of a long-term plan to reduce congestion and support the airport's growth, but Helmandai told News 2 the change would devastate the rideshare business as people move toward more convenient modes of transportation. 'The taxi will become more convenient. You just walk out, 'Taxi!' get in and go,' Helmandai said. 'But if you take a rideshare, definitely it will take 30 minutes, an hour for every driver to get there.' The change also raises concerns for travelers with mobility issues or young children. 'This place is huge as it is, and to have to make a passenger have to walk that much farther is ridiculous,' Nashville resident Melanie said. '…[For] anyone that has to take a wheelchair on a regular basis, this is going to be totally inconvenient,' she added. BNA representatives said the walk from the Ground Transportation Center to TSA is under 10 minutes. 'You are just going to add more traffic, more delays, and more problems — and that's one thing Nashville does not need,' Melanie said. Helmandai's plea to BNA: 'Don't treat us like we are nobody.' To customers: 'I ask you just to keep patience.' 'We deeply value all of our passengers, and ensuring that Nashville International Airport® (BNA®) remains accessible to everyone — is one of our highest priorities. While the walking path from the Ground Transportation Center (GTC) to the Grand Lobby is ADA-compliant and designed to accommodate passengers with mobility needs, as are all our areas at BNA, we understand that every travel experience is unique. Those who require additional support are encouraged to check their rideshare app for alternative drop-off options that may better suit their accessibility needs once the reconfiguration goes into effect on June 3. The comfort and well-being of all our passengers are important to us, and we remain committed to ensuring every passenger feels safe, supported, and welcome at BNA.' You can't Uber to the front door of Nashville International Airport anymore: What's changing

Some passengers have complained about having to walk 10 minutes or less to the Ground Transportation Center for rideshare pickup at Nashville International Airport. Now, they'll be dropped off there too— if taking an Uber or Lyft. Starting at 12:01 a.m. on June 3, rideshare drivers will not be allowed to drop passengers off curbside at the BNA terminal entrance. Instead, they will head to the Ground Transportation Center. From there, travelers will follow the sidewalk to the right and cross the street to reach Terminal One. They can take the escalator, elevator or stairs up to the lobby where airline check-in counters and security lines are located. The Ground Transportation Center is on the bottom level of BNA's Garage Two. "Travelers utilizing ride-share services to BNA are encouraged to take this brief walk into consideration when making plans for when their ride-share driver will pick them up and take them to BNA," airport spokesperson Erin Thomas said in a statement. Nashville International Airport said in the May 29 announcement that centralizing rideshare activity will improve efficiency, streamline traffic flow through the main terminal roadway and help rideshare drivers "maximize their earning potential." "These upgrades play a vital role in BNA's broader long-term infrastructure plan, designed to enhance airport accessibility, efficiency and overall traveler experience," a statement from the airport said. This adjustment comes amid the airport's multi-billion-dollar expansion that has been ongoing for the last eight years. The total renovation costs since 2017 amount to $4.49 billion, including the ongoing Concourse D extension, another parking garage and road improvements. Friends and family dropping travelers off at the airport will continue to be allowed curbside drop-off at Terminal One, and the airport says to expect less curbside congestion once the change takes effect. The Ground Transportation Center drop-off zone is only for rideshare drivers and riders. The Nashville International Airport asserts that rideshare drivers will be able to maximize earnings under the new rule. Instead of dropping off a rider, circling out of the airport and then back in to the Ground Transportation Center for a pick-up, drivers can simply stay in one place. Airport officials expect that this will decrease the wait time for rideshare pick-up from BNA. Hadley Hitson covers business news for The Tennessean. Happy 100th Birthday, Belcourt Theatre!

Move over, Grand Ole Opry, you're not the only Nashville icon hitting 100 this year. The Belcourt Theatre, the city's beloved indie cinema, has officially reached the century mark, and it's celebrating the only way it knows how: by rolling film. As part of its birthday festivities, the theater is hosting a special centennial series called 'Nashville: A City on Film,' a deep dive into how our city has appeared on the silver screen over the decades. (In other words, get ready to see Nashville play itself in a bunch of movies!) It all kicks off with the most meta choice possible: Robert Altman's 1975 classic Nashville. And to sweeten the opening weekend, actor Keith Carradine, who starred in the film and even won an Academy Award for the song he wrote and performed in it, will appear at the Belcourt in person on Sunday, June 1. Carradine's presence is a film buff's dream; after the screening, he'll share stories and answer audience questions about making the film. And that's just the beginning. 'Nashville: A City On Film' features eight films throughout June, each spotlighting different eras and corners of town, with more to be added as the celebration continues all year. The lineup ranges from a 1960s country-fried curio (Girl from Tobacco Row) and a 2000s concert documentary (Neil Young: Heart of Gold) to quirky indie fare like Harmony Korine's Gummo and the outrageous local musical satire Existo. There's also the '90s charmer The Thing Called Love (about aspiring songwriters in Nashville) and even the goofy Halloween romp Ernest Scared Stupid. In short, expect a little bit of everything – drama, music, comedy, and some weirdness – unified by one common show-stealer: the city of Nashville. Half the fun of this series is scanning the screen for familiar places. Altman's Nashville alone features a treasure trove of local spots, from the long-gone Opryland amusement park and the Exit/In to a climactic political rally at The Parthenon in Centennial Park. There's even a quick airport scene shot at Berry Field (known today as Nashville International Airport), which is sure to prompt some nostalgia. (Farewell, old BNA carpet!) The Thing Called Love (1993) offers its own sightseeing, as well as a much younger Sandra Bullock. Keep an eye out for Green Hills, the old Drake Motel on Murfreesboro Road, and a romantic moment on the then-Shelby Street Bridge downtown. But don't get too caught up in whether or not the scenes at Bluebird Café are legit. They were actually recreated on a Hollywood stage! Music history buffs will love Neil Young: Heart of Gold (2006), which captures an intimate performance at the Ryman Auditorium. You can practically feel the soul of the Mother Church in every frame. And for a lighter touch, Ernest Scared Stupid (1991) turns East Nashville's Five Points and Shelby Park into the backdrop for some slime-flinging, good-hearted Halloween mischief. There's nothing like seeing your neighborhood haunt pop up in a cult film to make a screening extra special. Of course, the Belcourt Theatre has plenty of its own history worth celebrating. It first opened its doors in 1925 as the Hillsboro Theatre, a silent movie house (complete with an orchestra pit for those pre-talkie flicks). In the 1930s, it even did a stint as an early stage for the Grand Ole Opry radio shows before the Opry moved on to bigger venues. Over the decades, the theater wore many hats, later hosting live plays as the Community Playhouse (home to groups like the Nashville Children's Theatre), then eventually transforming into the nonprofit art-house cinema cherished by Nashville film fans today. If those walls could talk, we have no doubt they'd have a century's worth of incredible stories. Now, at 100 years young, the Belcourt is proving that some classics never go out of style. This centennial film series isn't just a trip down memory lane; it's a chance for today's audiences to rediscover Nashville's cinematic moments and maybe learn something new about our hometown in the process. So, grab your popcorn (or perhaps a slice of birthday cake?), find a cozy seat, and enjoy the show. Happy birthday, Belcourt. See you at the movies! ********** Keep up with the best parts of life in Nashville and beyond. Subscribe to StyleBlueprint!

Residents in Glencliff Estates say noise from BNA has become excessive

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WKRN) — Every year, millions of people visit Nashville, which means a lot of planes and a lot of noise. However, some native Nashvillians have said it's just become too loud. Jeff LeGore has lived in Music City since 2017. Within the past eight years, he said the noise from the Nashville International Airport has become unbearable—especially at night. LeGore measured decibels as planes were taking off one day, finding that noise levels reached more than 98 decibels and peaked at about 101 decibels. That's about the same noise level as a running lawnmower. LeGore told News 2 he and his neighbors in Glencliff Estates are southeast of the airport, and the noise of the planes is so loud and clear that he is awoken in the night. He's gone as far as talking with his Metro Councilmember about it as well as attending neighborhood meetings about the noise problem, but he told News 2 that he's losing hope that anything could be done. Neighborhood News: Stories impacting your community | Read More LeGore has gone as far as talking with his district's council member about it, and has attended neighborhood meetings about the problem, but he says he's losing hope anything can be done. 'It's just getting louder and louder and it's going to affect my property value significantly,' LeGore said. 'We're doing pretty good up here. It's a nice little neighborhood, but it's definitely going to be affected if it keeps getting louder and louder.' News 2 reached out to the Federal Aviation Administration about air traffic and flight paths. As of publication, there has been no response. Do you have news happening in your neighborhood?
