Nashville SC squanders two-goal lead and Columbus rallies for a point in 2-2 draw
COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) — The Columbus Crew capitalized on a Nashville SC own goal in the 81st minute and the Crew salvaged a 2-2 tie on Wednesday keeping the two teams deadlocked for third place in the Eastern Conference standings at 28 points apiece. Hany Mukhtar scored at 78 minutes to put Nashville ahead 2-1 in the 78th minute. The Crew responded when a service from Malte Amundsen bounced off the leg of Jeisson Palacios near the left post to level it. With the draw, Nashville (8-4-4) stayed unbeaten in May with five wins and three draws. The Crew (7-2-7) have four ties and a loss in their past five matches and have not won since May 3 when they beat Charlotte FC 4-2. Columbus keeper Nicholas Hagen's late stop of Andy Najar in extra time preserved the win. Hagen recorded four saves in his second start in net substituting for starting keeper Patrick Schulte. Sam Surridge scored two minutes for Nashville's first goal. Diego Rossi padded the advantage to make it 2-0 when his right-footed shot from the middle of the box found its way to the net's lower left. ___ AP soccer:

Nashville SC beats New York Red Bulls 2-1 for first time in MLS team history
B.J. Callaghan called it a "daydream" of a Nashville SC goal. But it was 100 percent real. The whole sequence happened in just six seconds. Sam Surridge and Daniel Lovitz played a one-two pass down the left wing. Surridge wound up for what looked like a shot, but shuttled the ball over to Alex Muyl on his right. Muyl walled off the New York Red Bulls' Raheem Edwards, and with his back the facing goal, put the ball on a tee for Hany Mukhtar, who had been waiting just outside the penalty box. Mukhtar drove his shot low, hard and past goalkeeper Carlos Coronel. Advertisement Mukhtar's goal was the clincher in Nashville's history-making 2-1 win over the Red Bulls on May 14 at Geodis Park. It's the first time Nashville (7-4-2, 23 points) has ever beaten New York (5-5-3, 18 points), and it continued the club's best-ever start to an MLS season. Nashville moved up to fourth in the Eastern Conference, its highest since July 2023. Nashville lost 2-0 to the Red Bulls, last season's MLS Cup runners-up, on March 1. The Boys in Gold are now on a four-match unbeaten streak in MLS play and haven't lost in five games in all competitions. "All of these little moments that we're accumulating in the season continue to allow us to learn and grow," Callaghan, Nashville's coach, said. NSC finishes off its homestand on May 17 against D.C. United. Patrick Yazbek opens scoring with his first Nashville goal Nashville had trouble getting through the Red Bulls until the 34th minute, when midfielder Patrick Yazbek jumped on a headed pass from Surridge. Yazbek tore toward the goal with a huge advantage in numbers, including Muyl open on his left. Instead of laying it off, he darted toward the middle and ripped a shot from the top of the 18-yard box. Yazbek's shot hit the back of the net so hard it caromed 30 yards back out. Advertisement "I'd be lying if I didn't say the thought crossed my head that he should have passed the guy in," Callaghan said. "But when you have confident players, and we do, he cuts off to his right foot and hits a great shot. We always want players to be able to make those decisions." The goal was Yazbek's first in 20 matches with Nashville. "It just came off nicely," he said. "I've been working on my finishing, and I think at times I probably should be a little more selfish than what I am." Hany Mukhtar finding form Mukhtar, Nashville's top attacker, has never been a particularly fast starter. He didn't register a goal contribution during his first three games. Last season was his worst since entering MLS in 2020, with eight goals and nine assists — a far cry from his 23 goals and 11 assists during his MVP 2022 season. Advertisement But with his latest goal — which came six minutes after the Red Bulls' Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting equalized in the 56th minute — Mukhtar has clearly put those struggles in the past. He has six goals, which ties Surridge for the team high. Four of those goals have come in his past four games. "Hany's a player that breathes, sleeps, eats soccer," Callaghan said. "He's someone who's constantly trying to improve himself, study the game and how he can improve . . . He's starting to figure out where he's finding the ball in the penalty box and doing more repetitions in those angled shots." It already has surpassed that total in 2025, with a 6-1-1 record at Geodis, and has outscored opponents there 18-6. NSC has won four straight home games since losing to first-place FC Cincinnati on March 29. Advertisement "From day one, we said we want to be a team that represents this city," Callaghan said. " . . . We want (fans) to come to the stadium. They give us great energy. And from there, we want to make this place a really difficult place." Sam Surridge scores twice as Nashville SC beats Toronto FC 2-1 on the road
Whatever Sam Surridge has against the city of Toronto, Nashville SC is thankful for it. Surridge scored two goals as Nashville (8-4-3, 27 points) took down Toronto FC 2-1 at BMO Field on May 24. The Boys in Gold extended their unbeaten streak to six games in MLS play and eight games across all competitions. Advertisement Last June, Surridge scored twice to lead Nashville to a 2-1 win at Toronto. The striker's latest brace brought him to a team-high eight goals, tied for fourth in the league. Jonathan Osorio scored for Toronto (3-8-4, 13 points) in stoppage time, but NSC held on the last three minutes to stay in third place in the Eastern Conference. "I wouldn't say it was our best soccer and our best ability to execute," said Nashville coach B.J. Callaghan. "But I thought the group really competed well." Nashville finishes off a three-game road trip against the Columbus Crew on May 28 (7 p.m. CT). Inside Sam Surridge's performance vs Toronto While Nashville dictated terms for most of the game, it made adjustments in the second half to counteract Toronto's defense. Callaghan said Nashville had better positioning in central midfield and made more runs in behind the defense. Advertisement That's how Surridge scored his first goal. In the 57th minute, Andy Najar laced a long, floating pass down the right wing to Hany Mukhtar, who crossed to Surridge in front of goal for a tap-in. In the 89th minute, Surridge found the net again when substitute Jonathan Perez threaded him a pass in transition. "We still had good chances where I think we could have gone one or two up, but we didn't panic," Surridge said. "At halftime, it was us staying calm. It was a positive halftime. It wasn't one where we think we have to do better, just a few tweaks." Walker Zimmerman returns from concussion Defender Walker Zimmerman, who hadn't played since sustaining a concussion against Charlotte FC on April 5, made his return after missing nine games. The center back, Nashville's team captain, subbed on in the 73rd minute against Toronto. Advertisement "His presence is always there, his leadership has always been there," Callaghan said. "But there's always a moment that when he steps back on the field, the group gets a lift." Nashville, which struggled mightily without Zimmerman last season, played well during his absence. Jack Maher and Jeisson Palacios took hold in the middle of the defense, helping NSC go 6-1-2 and outscore opponents 18-8. "I'm going to have very tough decisions," Callaghan said. "Center backs have been playing really well. The back line's been playing really well. That's what winning teams have, depth and guys who are called on." Nashville continues to manage challenging May May was supposed to be one of the toughest stretches of the season for Nashville, with nine games in a 28-day span. NSC has met the challenge with its best soccer yet, including a 3-2 win over Orlando City on May 21 to advance to the U.S. Open Cup quarterfinals in July. Advertisement MORE: Nashville SC to host D.C. United in U.S. Open Cup quarterfinals in July Nashville's current unbeaten run is tied for the third-longest in team history. It went 11 games without a loss as a United Soccer League club in 2018 and had a nine-match undefeated streak in 2021. "Credit to the staff, we have to credit Robert Butler and Sydney Gray with medical high performance in turning these guys over every three days to play," Callaghan said. "And credit to the players and their ability to prepare before. We reflect, we refine what we're going to do, we recover, and then we do it again."
