A group of around 500 teenagers was dispersed by police after gathering at a beach in New York for "Senior Cut Day" that descended into chaos. Somewhere around 500 teenagers went to Jones Beach in Wantagh, New York, after a flyer promoting "Senior Cut Day" spread on social media, drawing people to the beach. According to News 12, police had to break up the crowd. Witnesses told the outlet that the beach quickly spiraled out of control once the massive number of teenagers arrived. Teen allegedly shows off imitation gun to officers at Jones Beach: NCPD
JONES BEACH, N.Y. (PIX11) – An 18-year-old was arrested as 300 teenagers descended onto Jones Beach on Thursday during their 'senior skip day,' according to the Nassau County Police Department. Police said Kyle Thomas is accused of showing what appeared to be a gun in his waistband as officers tried to disperse the crowd. Fights broke out between the teenagers, who are students of schools in Nassau County and Queens, according to authorities. More Local News Police said at least four people were injured. In New Jersey, lawmakers are working to crack down on large public fights at area beaches. More than 70 people were arrested after a rowdy Memorial Day weekend in Seaside Heights, according to authorities. The Jones Beach crowd isn't the first 'senior skip day' that has turned violent on Long Island. Police said a teenager was shot on the Long Beach boardwalk last year. Man allegedly rams into police cruiser after damaging cars in NY: police
VALLEY STREAM, N.Y. (PIX11) – A man is accused of driving his car into a police cruiser with officers inside in Valley Stream on Tuesday, according to the Nassau County Police Department. Police said Shawn Maraj, 31, was seen damaging cars along West Valley Stream Boulevard on multiple occasions. When officers arrived around 10 p.m., Maraj allegedly got into his 2018 Honda Civic and rammed into their police cruiser, according to authorities. More Local News Police said Maraj is accused of crashing into the cruiser several times, injuring two officers. Maraj allegedly drove across a lawn and crashed into a fence and bush to run from the officers, according to authorities. Police said he was arrested and charged with assault, attempted assault, criminal mischief and reckless endangerment. He's expected to be arraigned on Wednesday. LI man arrested for arson after Memorial Day house fire draws 100 firefighters
A Long Island man was arrested late Monday night following a house fire that killed three pets and mobilized dozens of firefighters in Plainview, authorities said. The Memorial Day blaze broke out just before 8 p.m. at a home on Eileen Avenue, News 12 Long Island reported, citing the Nassau County fire marshal. Nearly 100 firefighters from six different departments battled the fire, which was mainly concentrated in the back portion of the residence, according to Bethpage Fire Department Chief Francis DeBobes. 'We had a fire out the rear of the house, the entire rear of the house, and coming out the front door,' DeBobes said. Later on Monday, the Nassau County Police Department arrested 40-year-old Jahan Kia in connection with the fire. Kia, who's described as a tenant of the residence, is charged with arson, criminal mischief and animal cruelty, online court records show. He's believed to have started the fire in the basement stairwell. The fire was extinguished in about 30 minutes, officials said. While no residents were injured during the blaze, two dogs and one cat were reportedly killed. Two firefighters were transported to a nearby hospital for smoke inhalation and burns to their hands. Kia is scheduled to be arraigned in Nassau District Court on Tuesday. Under New York law, a person convicted of third-degree arson — defined as 'intentionally [damaging] a building or motor vehicle by starting a fire or causing an explosion' — can face up to 15 years in prison.

Three on Long Island die in fiery Mother's Day wreck when SUV hits tree
Three people were killed in a fiery wreck Sunday when the SUV they were riding in smashed into a tree and burst into flames near Bethpage State Park on Long Island, authorities said. The 2022 Dodge Durango was traveling east on Stymus Avenue in Bethpage when it hit the tree with a resounding crash at about 1 a.m., the Nassau County Police Department told News 12 Long Island. The Bethpage Fire Department rushed to the scene and quelled the flames, ABC News reported. Nearby resident Angela Signoriello witnessed the aftermath. 'I ran, and all you could see is that car totaled, and it was just destroyed,' Signoriello told News 12. Neighbor Kazi Ahmed ran outside after hearing a bang and tried to open the vehicle's rear door, but it was locked, he told Newsday. Initially the fire was small, and he ran back across the street to fetch a baseball bat to break the window, he said. When he returned, the car was fully engulfed. Ring camera footage obtained by Newsday showed him running back and forth. The crash shut down a stretch of Plainview Road on Sunday morning as police rerouted traffic while they investigated and towed the charred vehicle as neighbors watched from their lawns, according to Newsday. Later in the morning, people who said they were friends of the victims came by the scene, News 12 and Newsday reported. Police did not publicly identify the three, who were pronounced dead at the scene. Other neighbors said the stretch of road, which Newsday noted runs alongside the Yellow Golf Course at Bethpage State Park, is known to be dangerous. 'It's a blind turn,' Bethpage resident Chris Theo told News 12. Moreover, the road is known as a high-speed shortcut between Bethpage State Parkway and Route 135, Newsday noted. Ahmed told the newspaper that for years he has been calling for speed bumps to be installed near where the crash occurred.
