UFC Rankings: Della Maddalena And Silva Break Into P4P Top 10

With his win over Belal Muhammad in the main event of UFC 315, Jack Della Maddalena captured the UFC welterweight title. That win caused a shake-up in the UFC rankings, moving the newly minted 170-pound champion into the top 10 of the UFC pound-for-pound rankings, while at the same time reshuffling the UFC welterweight rankings. Jack Della Maddalena executed a stellar game plan at UFC 315. He combined his top-notch striking with the ability to stop Belal Muhammad's takedowns. The strategy paid dividends, forcing Muhammad to engage in a five-round striking battle. That scenario favored the Australian, earning him a unanimous decision win and the UFC 170-pound title. Now at the top of the UFC welterweight heap, Della Maddalena surged in the pound-for-pound rankings as well, breaking in as the No. 9 fighter in the UFC. Belal Muhammad left UFC 316 without the UFC welterweight title he claimed in an upset win over Leon Edwards in July 2024. The setback, Muhammad's first loss since he dropped a decision to Geoff Neal in 2019, ended his 11-fight unbeaten streak. With the loss, Muhammad fell to No. 1 in the official UFC welterweight rankings. The former champ also plummeted in the pound-for-pound rankings, dropping to No. 13. Natalia Silva shook up the UFC women's flyweight division with her win over former champion Alexa Grasso on the UFC 315 main card. Silva entered the fight as the No. 5 fighter in the UFC women's 125-pound division, while Grasso was ranked No. 1. With her one-sided win over Grasso, Silva surged to the No. 1 spot in the women's flyweight rankings. Silva also improved to No. 8 in the women's pound-for-pound rankings. Silva is a perfect 7-0 in the UFC. Alexa Grasso took some hits at UFC 315, both figuratively and literally. While Silva marked up Grasso with her kickboxing skills, the former champ dropped from her No. 1 ranking to No. 3 in the women's 125-pound weight class. Grasso also lost ground in the pound-for-pound rankings, falling to No. 5. While some fighters did not agree with the judge's decision to give the UFC 315 bout between Jose Aldo and Aiemann Zahabi to Zahabi, their opinions don't carry any weight on the official record. Zahabi's decision win moved him to No. 11 in the UFC's bantamweight division following UFC 315. As for Aldo, he retired after the fight and is no longer a ranked UFC competitor. UFC 315 took place on Saturday, May 10 from Bell Centre in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. The main card streamed on ESPN+ following prelims on ESPN and early prelims on ESPN+. The next fight card on the UFC schedule, UFC Vegas 106 takes place on Saturday, May 17 from the UFC Apex in Las Vegas. In the main event, former welterweight title challenger Gilbert Burns faces the undefeated Michael Morales. The entire UFC Vegas 106 card streams on ESPN+ with prelims starting at 4:00 p.m. ET and the main card beginning at 7:00 p.m. ET. Alexa Grasso Posts Gruesome Post-Fight Image Following UFC 315 Loss

MONTREAL, QUEBEC - MAY 10: Alexa Grasso of Mexico looks on in a women's flyweight bout against ... More Natalia Silva of Brazil during UFC 315 at Bell Centre on May 10, 2025 in Montreal, Quebec. (Photo by) Mixed martial artists are known for showing the scars from war after a fight—win or lose. Monday was former UFC women's flyweight champion Alexa Grasso's turn to display the bruises from a one-sided loss to rising contender Natalie Silva on Saturday night in Montreal at UFC 315. Grasso took to Instagram to show off a pretty gruesome image of the aftermath of her fight with Silva. During Grasso's unanimous decision loss to Silva, she was picked apart by the Brazilian's combination of speed and striking accuracy. Grasso has displayed high-level boxing during her career, but she simply couldn't get a handle on the elusive Silva. (Photo by Chris Unger/Zuffa LLC) During the fight, Silva connected with 65 significant strikes to just 45 from Grasso. Even when Grasso attempted to zero in on Silva to secure a takedown, the speed and explosiveness were too big of an advantage for her to overcome. (Photo by Chris Unger/Zuffa LLC) The loss will drop Grasso to No. 2 at best for now, but there is a chance she could fall further. Erin Blanchfield and Maycee Barber clash on May 31, and the winner of that fight could move past Grasso in the rankings. Meanwhile, I'd expect Silva to vault to No. 1 when the new women's flyweight rankings are released since that's where Grasso was ranked ahead of their fight on Saturday. While Silva looked championship-ready in her defeat of Grasso, she will likely have to wait a while to get a title shot. Valentina Shevchenko successfully defended her 125-pound crown via unanimous decision over Manon Fiorot in the UFC 315 co-main event. It is likely she will get a super fight against reigning women's strawweight champion Weili Zhang, who is expected to vacate the strawweight crown to move up to 125 pounds. Silva's best chance is probably to wait for the winner of that fight and then to hopefully get an opportunity to challenge for the crown in early 2026. Grasso will probably get a decently long medical suspension because of the damage she took to her face, so we'll see when she will be cleared to train and to return to the Octagon. However, it would make sense for her to face the winner of Blanchfield-Barber or to face the winner of the June 14 fight between Rose Namajunas and Miranda Maverick. Namajunas-Grasso has some appeal, as it would be a battle between two former champions—and that's not commonplace in the women's division. As it is, Grasso showed her commitment to the sport and that she is a true warrior. Her return will be anticipated, but as she has now lost two in a row, the stakes will be even higher for the next fight—no matter who she fights.

Montreal weather: A week of sunshine is better than a kick in the teeth

It took May a while to get warmed up, just like the old clunker your trusty Gazette weather reporter uses to get around. Yet spring seems to have kicked into gear. Monday dawned at the delightfully early 5:27 and set about climbing toward a high of 21 C, with a UV index of 7, or high. The temperature is expected to dip to 11 C overnight. The rest of the week remains in the mid to high 20s, with no significant cloud cover till Friday. The long-range forecast is hinting at a rainy holiday weekend, but let's wait till we get there before panicking. As for the actual kick in the teeth (pictured above), Brazilian Natalia Silva (19-5-1) emerged victorious at UFC 315 in Montreal with a unanimous decision (30-27, 30-27, 30-27) against former champion Alexa Grasso (16-5-1). The No. 5 ranked Silva has won 13 straight fights, including seven consecutive wins inside the UFC octagon.

Natalia Silva wants next title shot following Alexa Grasso win at UFC 315 Show Caption Hide Caption Natalia Silva ready for title shot after beating Alexa Grasso UFC 315 winner Natalia Silva spoke to MMA Junkie and reporters post-fight after her unanimous decision victory over Alexa Grasso in Montreal. Natalia Silva believes it's her turn to get a crack at the UFC women's flyweight title. After dominantly defeating former UFC champion Alexa Grasso at Saturday's UFC 315, Silva (19-5-1 MMA, 7-0 UFC) called for her shot at the belt. Silva was asked about what she wanted next minutes before the UFC women's flyweight championship fight between Valentina Shevchenko and Manon Fiorot, so she didn't have a clear callout in mind. However, no matter who was going to win the belt, Silva was certain she could make a sellable fight with either Shevchenko or Fiorot. "My eyes are set on the title," Silva said at the UFC 315 post-fight press congerence. "That's what I want next. There's even stories with both of those girls to promote this fight. With Valentina, she was asked about me one time, and she said she doesn't know who I was, so it's about time she knows who I am. With Manon, she came in to replace me when I broke my arm, and I was supposed to fight Victoria Leonardo, and she came in to replacement, so there's story lines with both of them." Shevchenko defendex her belt in Montreal. She outpointed Fiorot in a unanimous decision in the co-main event of the card, just moments after Silva's dominant decision win over Grasso. In regard to her latest win, which put her on a 13-fight wining streak, Silva said she's happy with how things worked out for her at UFC 315. "I'm so happy and so emotional," Silva said. "I worked for this and worked a lot for this moment, and now I'm so happy. I'm feeling very emotional for this victory."

(Graham Hughes/The Canadian Press via AP) MONTREAL (AP) — Aiemann Zahabi shocked UFC Hall of Famer Jose Aldo in a featherweight main card fight at UFC 315 on Saturday night, after which Aldo announced his retirement. Zahabi (13-2) won by unanimous decision (29-28, 29-28, 29-28) and the Canadian has now won six straight fights. Advertisement The fight was originally scheduled to be disputed at the bantamweight division, but was changed to featherweight on Friday after both fighters checked in above the weight limit. Aldo (32-10), of Brazil, announced his retirement from MMA fighting after a 21-year career. The card is headlined by welterweight title bout pitting Belal Muhammad and Jack Della Maddalena and a women's flyweight title matchup between Valentina Shevchenko and Manon Fiorot. Saturday's card was the first in Canada since Donald Trump was re-elected U.S. president in November. It comes amid growing political tensions between Canada and the United States, as Trump has repeatedly suggested that Canada should become the 51st U.S. state, and some of that tension spilled over. Advertisement Canadian Mike Malott (12-2-1) won his fight with American Charles Radtke (10-5) by knockout 26 seconds into the second round of their welterweight bout. Malott took down Radtke with a clean left hook and would not let up, striking his opponent with repeated followup blows to seal the knockout. Radtke was met with jeers and curses from fans throughout the fight in response to comments he made to Canadian fans at a pre-fight news conference on Wednesday and the booing of 'The Star-Spangled Banner' at Canadian sporting events in recent months. Radtke said "when you all boo the national anthem, somebody's gonna have to pay for that.' In the women's flyweight division, Canadian Jasmine Jasudavicius (14-3) took down Brazilian Jessia Andrade (26-14) by submission just over halfway through the first round. Advertisement 'When I was preparing for this fight, I kept on thinking about it being a quick finish,' said Jasudavicius. 'I kept on telling myself to be ready for 15 hard minutes and everything." Marc-Andre Barriault (17-9) also knocked out opponent Bruno Silva (23-13) 1:27 into the opening round of their middleweight bout with an elbow struck to the side of Silva's head. Silva left the octagon on a stretcher. Benoit Saint Denis (14-3) beat Kyle Prepolec (12-8) by submission in the opening main card fight. The Frenchman took down the Canadian with an arm-triangle choke midway through the second round. Prepolec only found out less than two weeks ago he would be fighting in Montreal. The 35-year-old was called in to replace Joel Alvarez, who has a hand injury. ___ AP sports:
