Former NRL star Nathan Merritt allegedly caught high-range drink driving in Sydney's inner west
Former rugby league player Nathan Merritt has spent his night behind bars after allegedly high-range drink driving in Sydney's inner west. The former South Sydney Rabbitohs star was stopped by police about 11pm on Saturday after running through a red light on New Canterbury Rd in Petersham. Officers from the Inner West Police Area Command conducted a random breath test as he blew 0.134 in his blood alcohol reading. According to New South Wales Police, Merritt was taken to Newtown Police Station after returning a positive breath test. 'The driver was stopped and arrested after a roadside breath test was positive,' a statement from NSW Police read. 'The 41-year-old man was taken to Newtown Police Station where he returned an alleged breath-analysis reading of 0.184. 'He's now been charged with high-range drink PCA and breach of bail. 'He was refused bail to appear in Parramatta Local Court today.' Meanwhile the 41-year-old has found himself caught up in trouble after he allegedly assaulted his partner Faith Phillips and tussled with security guards outside a pub in Sydney's CBD. He was granted bail on those charges back in February. His latest alleged incident now means he is charged with breaching the conditions of his bail. Merritt played 237 NRL games for South Sydney Rabbitohs and the Cronulla Sharks. Across his career he scored 154 tries in his first-grade games and played one time for NSW in State of Origin.

Father, 27, Dies After Coming into Contact with Live Power Lines During Storm
A 27-year-old father from Indiana has died after he came into contact with power lines that were brought down in a storm, authorities said. On Wednesday, April 2, Nathan Merritt was driving his pickup truck when he struck downed power lines that were blocking the roadway in his hometown of Danville amid a storm, the Hendricks County Sheriff's Office said in a statement obtained by PEOPLE. When Merritt got out of his truck, he 'came into contact with the live power lines,' according to the sheriff's office. When deputies arrived at the scene after 9:30 p.m. local time, they found Merritt's Dodge truck on fire. Merritt was discovered on the ground near the truck, but officials were not able to approach him until the power company shut off the power. He was pronounced dead at the scene. The investigation into his death is ongoing, according to the sheriff's office. Related: At Least 6 Dead as Tornadoes Barrel Through U.S. and People Brace for 'Catastrophic' Flooding Related: Mich.
