‘Back the Blue Lou' 5K raises money for injured St. Louis officer Nathan Spiess

FLORISSANT, Mo. – 'Back the Blue Lou' overcame the rain and hosted a 5K on Saturday morning for a very good cause. The race kicked off at 8:30 a.m. over at St. Ferdinand Park in Florissant. Around 80 percent of the money raised is going to injured St. Louis police officer Nathan Spiess, who was critically injured when he was struck by a vehicle on Interstate 70 back in March while trying to arrest a car thief. The rest of the money raised will go to the BackStoppers Inc. organization, a nonprofit that offers financial assistance to the families of fallen first responders. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. St. Louis officer Nathan Spiess, struck by driver while on duty, released from hospital

ST. LOUIS – Nathan Spiess, a St. Louis police officer struck by a vehicle last Monday on Interstate 70 while attempting to arrest a suspected car thief, is being released from the hospital. A police escort is underway, with firetrucks also honoring him by displaying an American flag on the Tamm Avenue overpass near Interstate 64. The escort will proceed west from the Barnes-Jewish Hospital and then onto South Kings Highway. During the escort, a large American flag will be displayed on the Tamm Avenue overpass on I-64. The St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department asks for onlookers to remain out of the street during this process. Officials say that both directions on South Kingshighway from the hospital will be temporarily closed, but it will reopen once the escort reaches westbound I-64. On March 17, Spiess was struck by a car while attempting to arrest a teenage carjacking suspect. The incident resulted in the amputation of the lower part of one of Spiess' legs. He has undergone three surgeries since the accident. Authorities report that Spiess was holding a 15-year-old carjacking suspect at gunpoint after a chase when both were hit by a vehicle allegedly driven by Frank Carr. Investigators say Carr fled the scene but was later apprehended and is facing charges. He is due in court on Wednesday. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. ST. LOUIS – Officer Nathan Spiess, 31, was struck by a vehicle on Interstate 70 while attempting to arrest a suspected car thief early this week. In the aftermath of that event, Spiess suffered severe injuries to his leg, requiring it to be partially amputated. On March 20, his former SLMPD partner, Colin Ledbetter, also injured in the line of duty, had the opportunity to share with FOX 2 on Spiess's service to his community. Now a few days later, Officer Spiess is beginning his road to recovery, with his family sharing a picture with him in the hospital.
