Nathanael Greene Academy responds to backlash fueled by arrests of former teachers

The news that two teachers had sexual relations with a student at Nathanael Greene Academy (NGA) attracted so many negative comments and rumors on the school's Facebook page that the school announced this week that it had suspended the page. The two former teachers at the private Greene County school were both arrested recently and jailed following an investigation by the Georgia Bureau of Investigation Many of the social media posts were making false claims about current students, according to the statement sent to school parents and released Wednesday by the school's attorney, Daniel S. Woodrum of Athens. 'The persons posting the statements concerning the students are not authorized by NGA to post information about students. There are seemingly countless false allegations, baseless rumors, and tenuous speculations about, which are provably inaccurate,' the statement reads. Previously: Two former private school teachers in Greene County allegedly had sex with same boy, lawyer says As a result of the law enforcement investigation, the school announced that media members would not be allowed on campus and that meetings with the Board of Trustees will be scheduled with parents to address their concerns. The school announced it had completed a preliminary investigation into the alleged actions by Bonnie Elizabeth Brown, 25, of White Plains, and Sherri Delle Mauldin, 60, who had a Buckhead rural route address. Both face felony charges stemming from the alleged sexual contact with a male student who was under the age of 16. The school opened in 1959 in the incorporated town of Siloam, which the 2020 census shows has a population of about 200 people. The school reported that one of the suspects had left the school in May 2023 and the other in May 2024. Both have been indefinitely prohibited from returning to NGA property. Brown, an alumni of the school, is reported to have left the school last year and took a job in the Wilkes County school system, but was fired after her arrest. More: Second former teacher at private school in Greene County arrested in sex case The report also notes that none of the alleged conduct occurred on the NGA campus or at an NGA sponsored event. A lawyer for the victim said earlier that physical contact between the student and teachers did occur on campus. However, NGA reports that law enforcement disputes this claim. The school did receive a 'threat of civil litigation' in February from a lawyer representing a former NGA student, but the school said it had not previously received a complaint from the student or the parents regarding the former employees. The school noted that if such a complaint had been received, school administrators would have acted upon the matter. The school also noted it had never received any short message services or text messages regarding inappropriate behavior between a student and teacher. Rumors of such messages were made on social media, but interviews with those who may have knowledge of the messages all denied ever seeing such messages, according to the report. The school noted it has followed all laws requiring the hiring and screening of those seeking teaching jobs. Those rules include that no employee shall be in a room one-on-one with a student with the door closed. The two former teachers had both passed background checks. The report notes that school trustees are reviewing the case and may confer with a lawyer and law enforcement. The school is cooperating with law enforcement 'to the fullest extent,' according to the report. Two former private school teachers in Greene County allegedly had sex with same boy, lawyer says

The two former teachers charged recently with having sexual relations with a student at a private Christian school in Greene County allegedly knew that each other was involved with the same student, a lawyer for the victim said Tuesday. The alleged sexual activity occurred both on the campus of Nathanael Greene Academy in Siloam and off campus, Atlanta lawyer Ashley Mitchell said. The former teachers, Bonnie Elizabeth Brown, 25, of White Plains, and Sherri Delle Mauldin, 60, who resided off Lake Oconee near Morgan County, are each charged with improper sexual contact by an employee. Mauldin also faces charges of aggravated child molestation and statutory rape, according to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation. She remained in the Greene County Jail on Tuesday awaiting a bond hearing. Previously: Second former teacher at private school in Greene County arrested in sex case Brown, a graduate of Nathanael Greene Academy and the school's 2016 homecoming queen, has been released from jail on a $50,000 bond. The school, established in 1969, has grades from kindergarten to 12th grade. Brown was working currently as a teacher at Washington-Wilkes County Primary School, but the Wilkes County School District announced Monday that she was no longer employed there. The investigation that led to the arrests of Brown and Mauldin was initiated last June. 'It's the classic case of predators having access to children and not much oversight,' Mitchell said. The sexual activity between the teachers and student, who is under the age of 16, was exposed by other students, according to Mitchell. 'There were students who had knowledge,' she said. 'There was a situation where students were reporting it to their family and it eventually made its way to the Greene County Sheriff's Office.' Initially: GBI charges teacher in Greene County for alleged sexual contact with student Greene County Sheriff Donnie Harrison said Monday that upon receiving the complaint, he forwarded it to the GBI. Mitchell said complaints were also made known to the school administration. 'Their claim is they investigated it and found no wrongdoing,' she said, adding that the quality of an investigation is premised on "how good the investigation is." 'The GBI and law enforcement have done a thorough and diligent job. None of this was a hasty process,' Mitchell said. Two teachers from same private school accused of sexually abusing student, GA cops say

Two former teachers from the same private Christian school have been charged in a sex abuse case, state investigators said. Sherri Delle Mauldin, 60, of Greene County, was arrested and charged with having improper sexual contact with a student while employed at Nathanael Greene Academy, according to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation. Mauldin was also charged with aggravated child molestation and statutory rape, authorities said in a March 24 news release. Her arrest comes less than a week after Bonnie Elizabeth Brown, 25, another former Nathanael Greene Academy teacher, was also charged with improper sexual contact, according to investigators. Brown was teaching at Washington-Wilkes Primary School in nearby Wilkes County before her March 19 arrest, the school district said. It's unclear how long the alleged abuse occurred, though the GBI said it began investigating in June 2024 after reports of sexual contact between a student and former Nathanael Greene Academy educator. Authorities haven't said whether the cases involve the same student, or multiple students. McClatchy News reached out to the GBI for more information March 25 and was awaiting a response. Nathanael Greene Academy is a private, faith-based school in Siloam, a town about 60-miles west from Augusta. The school, which serves students K3-12, 'nurtures individuality, diversity, and morality in an academic environment,' its Facebook page said before it was deleted. In a statement posted March 24, administrators said they were aware of the former teachers' arrests. 'NGA's administration and Board of Trustees are cooperating with law enforcement and assisting them in every possible way,' the statement said. 'Nathanael Greene Academy is committed to the safety, welfare and education of all of its students - past, present and future.' An attorney representing a victim in the case confirmed their client had physical contact with both teachers 'at the school and outside the school,' WXIA reported. The student, through their attorney, expressed relief that both women were arrested. 'These women took advantage of their positions as my teachers,' they said, according to WXIA. 'My school did not protect me as a child. I see that now, and I hope that these arrests will protect our community and children in it.' Mauldin and Brown were both booked into the Greene County Sheriff's Office jail, the GBI said. Authorities said the investigation is ongoing. Once finished, the case will be handed off to the Ocmulgee District Attorney's Office for prosecution, the GBI said. Anyone with information on the case is asked to call the GBI regional investigative office in Milledgeville at 478-445-4173, or submit an anonymous tip online.
