Bahrain and US Go Green
TDT | Manama Bahraini officials and US diplomats came together this week to plant trees as part of a national push to expand green spaces and build climate resilience. The Ministry of Municipalities Affairs and Agriculture, in collaboration with the US Embassy in Manama, held the afforestation event in partnership with the Horse Welfare Authority and the Southern Area Municipality. The initiative falls under Bahrain's National Afforestation Plan, which seeks to green urban areas and promote environmental awareness among residents. Joint Effort Employees of the US Embassy and their families, along with participants in cultural and academic exchange programmes, joined government representatives in the tree-planting drive. Ministry officials said the event aimed to deepen community engagement in climate action while reinforcing bilateral cooperation. The activity reflects Bahrain's broader environmental strategy and its effort to include civil society, foreign missions, and local entities in sustainable development. Green Milestones Under the afforestation plan, Bahrain is targeting a twofold increase in its tree population by 2035, an interim goal toward reaching nationwide carbon neutrality by 2060. The ministry thanked all those who took part, calling the event a model for how grassroots participation and diplomatic partnerships can support national climate targets.

Bahrain Marks Earth Day with Renewed Commitment to Environmental Protection and Sustainability
On the occasion of Earth Day, observed annually on April 22, Minister of Municipalities Affairs and Agriculture, H.E. Eng. Wael bin Nasser Al Mubarak, reaffirmed Bahrain's commitment to environmental protection and the sustainable use of natural resources. The minister emphasized the Kingdom's dedication to advancing the National Afforestation Plan, which aims to double the number of trees in Bahrain from 1.8 million to 3.6 million by 2035. He stated that the ministry continues to expand greening initiatives and tree-planting efforts in line with global calls to reduce harmful waste and promote sustainable waste management. Al Mubarak highlighted Bahrain's ongoing implementation of the National Carbon Neutrality Action Plan, as announced by His Majesty King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa. The plan reflects Bahrain's direction toward a more sustainable future by embracing best environmental practices to address the challenges of climate change. He also praised the initiatives led by His Royal Highness Prince Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa, the Crown Prince and Prime Minister, which focus on environmental protection and the expansion of afforestation projects across the Kingdom. In the same context, the minister applauded the achievements of the 'Mangrove Bahrain' initiative, launched by His Highness Shaikh Mohammed bin Salman Al Khalifa, for its significant role in safeguarding marine ecosystems and preserving natural resources. Bahrain has made notable progress in mangrove reforestation, further strengthening its environmental legacy. The Ministry of Municipalities Affairs and Agriculture, according to Al Mubarak, continues to roll out various environmental initiatives. These include improving waste management services, expanding green spaces, enhancing sustainable waste disposal methods, and supporting a culture of recycling through the establishment of dedicated waste collection centers across the country. In his closing remarks, the minister described Earth Day as a vital opportunity to renew Bahrain's commitment to environmental conservation and natural resource preservation. He underscored that these efforts are essential pillars of sustainable development and quality of life, emphasizing that the land is a core part of national identity and an enduring source of prosperity for future generations

The Ambassador reaffirmed the U.S. Embassy's dedication to continued partnership with Bahrain and extended well wishes for the Kingdom's success and prosperity. The tree-planting event was attended by senior officials, including Engineer Shaikh Mohammed bin Ahmed Al Khalifa, Undersecretary for Municipal Affairs, and Engineer Asim Abdul Latif, Undersecretary for Agriculture and Animal Resources, along with representatives from the Ministry and the U.S. Embassy. This initiative underscores Bahrain's ongoing efforts to promote environmental sustainability while reinforcing the strong diplomatic ties between the two nations.
