Apprentices raise £1,500 for life saving charity
Nuclear apprentices have put teamwork into action to support a vital heart health charity, raising £1,500 for the cause. The Sellafield Ltd apprentices, who are trained by Lakes College, raised £1,500 for Logan and Gary's Lions Heart Fund, a lifesaving initiative that funds heart screenings in memory of two beloved figures from the rugby league community. The fundraising took place during National Apprenticeship Week and involved the Sellafield Ltd nuclear apprentices who are based at Energus. Divided into groups, they were tasked with developing creative and sustainable fundraising ideas - ranging from games to products - with all proceeds going to the charity. Josh MacAlister, MP for Whitehaven and Workington, attended the event, chatting with the apprentices and taking part in the activities. Lakes College Principal Chris Nattress praised the fundraising, saying: 'Seeing young people work together in teams is great, but to see them doing it for such a worthy cause is just amazing. 'Supporting heart screening for adolescents is so important, and this kind of initiative really makes a difference. Well done to everyone involved.' Logan Holgate was a Sellafield Ltd apprentice when he tragically passed away aged 18. His aunt Lisa Powe was presented the cheque at Energus, where the current apprentices train. Lisa said: 'We rely on donations, and what the apprentices have done is even more special because Logan almost started his career here. It's lovely to see people at Lakes College supporting the fund.' She added: 'The money raised goes directly to providing heart screenings for people aged 16 and over. There are young people out there with undiagnosed conditions, and this screening can save lives.' Helen Graham, social impact manager at Lakes College said: 'The learners and staff really put so much effort into the project and should be incredibly proud of the amount they raised for such a good cause.'

Bradford Jobcentre looking forward to assisting jobseekers and firms
Jobcentre Plus work coaches are ready to assist jobseekers and employers in Bradford. Jenifer Ward from Bradford Jobcentre said: "With spring just around the corner we're looking forward to helping more jobseekers and local businesses. "For jobseekers, our work coaches are geared up to provide the right support to get them job ready, including access to training and voluntary work experience. "This, along with specialist services through the Disability Employment Advisors, can act as a spring board to a new career. "For employers, we can host recruitment days and identify suitable applicants to fill their vacancies, and we'd encourage them to get in touch to find out more." The Jobcentre is also focusing on building community relationships. On February 13, Bradford's second Youth Hub was officially launched at the BEAP community centre in Manningham. Local employers and training providers attended to showcase opportunities available to jobseekers. This event coincided with National Apprenticeship Week, during which various information sessions were held to promote apprenticeships and support people in their applications. The Jobcentre continues to refer to skills boot camps, which are designed to help people develop skills that local employers are looking for in areas such as HR, leadership and management, and project management. A growth area is reportedly 'Green Skills,' with a number of local courses available to equip people with the knowledge and tools to thrive in a sustainable world. This includes courses in subjects like carbon literacy and the impact of climate change, environmental sustainability, and preventing plastic pollution. The Jobcentre is also working on local campaigns to raise awareness of jobs in the warehousing and care sectors. They will be arranging group information sessions in the Jobcentres, and working with employers to match the right people to those jobs. In Yorkshire and the Humber, the employment rate is 72.2 per cent, up 0.3 percentage points on the quarter and down 1.9 percentage points on the year - according to figures shared by a spokesperson. David Wilson Homes Burley in Wharfedale apprentice shares experience
A David Wilson Homes apprentice, who is developing her carpentry skills in Burley in Wharfedale, has shared her experience. The message was shared during National Apprenticeship Week, which ran last week, from February 10 to February 16. Twenty-six-year-old Bethany Padget is working at the housebuilder's Centurion Meadows development. When asked about her role, she said: "From when I was looking into apprenticeships, David Wilson Homes stood out as being extremely well-organised - the staff were very welcoming, and I was able to speak with some apprentices already on the course. "I really like the balance of the apprenticeship. "I work each day on site, and then will do a block at college. "This allows me to work with some great people and get hands-on experience; I'm always learning and it really doesn't feel like a job. "I will definitely be looking to complete the next level of the apprenticeship, and in the future I'd love to look towards site management!" Gavin Birch, managing director at David Wilson Homes Yorkshire West, said: "The construction industry is continuing to grow and this is an exciting time for anyone with an interest in housebuilding to join a market leading company. "As one of the country's leading housebuilders, we are absolutely committed to developing raw talent, and I believe that we have a duty to provide apprenticeship opportunities." The company, which deals in mechanical, electrical, instrumentation, control and automation, has committed to recruiting 20 more apprentices this year. Wrapping up the week, BGEN, based in Centre Park, hosted its largest early careers conference to date, aimed at helping apprentices enhance their skills and knowledge for a fulfilling career. The event saw more than 60 apprentices come together to learn and celebrate their contributions to the company and the local economy. "We will continue to invest significantly in our apprentices and support them as they develop a skill set which will benefit both themselves and our clients." BGEN is committed to creating rewarding career paths for apprentices. One success story is that of Ian McWha, who started as an apprentice with the firm in 1997 and is now the managing director of the Technology Strategic Business Unit. Ian McWha (Image: Supplied) Mr McWha said: "The hands-on experience I gained through my own apprenticeship was invaluable. "I'm proud of what I have achieved since completing my apprenticeship 24 years ago and I would recommend this as a very worthwhile route for others." Megan Thomas, a commercial assistant and Level 4 construction quantity surveyor, joined BGEN in 2022. She said: "BGEN and my mentors have been incredibly supportive throughout my apprenticeship journey. "My apprenticeship has helped me get to where I am today and I'm excited about my future career prospects thanks to the skills I'm acquiring."
