A cut above the rest: Butchers showcase their skills in Penn State competition

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. (WTAJ) — Many from across the state competed in the 2025 Best Butcher Contest at the Penn State meat lab to see who had the best cut of meat. Competitors were judged by four expert judges on their technique, precision and yield. The butchers showcased their skills and had just 45 minutes to do so. The event was also meant to showcase the importance that butchers play in the supply chain. 'For us, it's kind of twofold, shining a light on their skills and their craft, but also educating them on how they can better sell these, within their retail shops,' Northeast Beef Promotion Initiative Director of Marketing Kaitlyn Swope said. Huntingdon County highlights local beef farmers during National Beef Month Swope explained that the butcher's yield was important as they wanted to minimize waste and utilize the beef efficiently. The butchers and those who play a role in those businesses used the competition as an opportunity to fine-tune their craft and figure out how they could continue to deliver a high-quality product. 'We have a lot of spectators that are just watching the contest today, kind of seeing, maybe if they want to do it in the future,' Swope said. The contest was held in conjunction with the Pennsylvania Association of Meat Processors' annual meeting. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. Huntingdon County highlights local beef farmers during National Beef Month

HUNTINGDON COUNTY, Pa. (WTAJ) — May is National Beef Month, and officials in Huntingdon County are highlighting the importance of farmers throughout the country. Agriculture is one of America's top industries and certainly Pennsylvania's. Rodney Davis is a sixth-generation farmer who helps put food on the tables of many Americans, but not without uncertainty for future prices and a growing need for younger farmers. 'To actually get them to experience it. The reward, when you look down the pasture and the cow and calf are together. I realize that I'm helping feed people and helping make their lives better,' Davis said. A cut above the rest: Butchers showcase their skills in Penn State competition Pennsylvania has more cows than some other states have residents. According to State Board Director for District 12, Pennsylvania Farm Bureau, Marty Yahner, Pennsylvania is the top cattle-producing state in the Northeast with over 1.6 million head of cattle and calves. Many Americans don't realize what the process is from the time the cow is born until the time it hits the grocery store shelves. We're told it can take about 18 months. Not only are officials trying to show what farmers do, but they are also educating them on how big the industry actually is. 'About not only where our food comes from, but also policymakers and the public. We want you to know that beef is a big industry and a big part of our economy in Pennsylvania,' Yahner said. Davis emphasized that many don't know where their food comes from and this is why education is crucial on this topic. 'I don't understand what somebody experiences in the inner city, and it's important for me to hear from them and to understand why they think what they do. But I also appreciate when they're willing to listen to why we do what we do,' Davis said. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. 168,000 hotdogs to help amidst federal funding cuts

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO) — One in 9 South Dakotans don't know where their next meal will come from, according to Feeding South Dakota. With recent federal funding cuts, the uncertainty is only growing. This harsh reality has inspired two organizations to give back this month. Hotdogs, hotdogs, and more hotdogs could be found at Feeding South Dakota. 'The Cattlemen's Foundation is so excited and proud to partner with Jorgensen Land and Cattle on this 23,000-pound donation of all-beef hot dogs,' President of the SD Cattlemen's Foundation, Ryan Eichler said. Vote for South Dakota's best beef burger Those beef hotdogs are actually referred to as 'bulldogs' by Bryan Jorgensen. 'They're 100% our bulls. And so they grind the bull up. You know, make hotdogs and they're very, very lean and very good, so they're nutritious. So, yeah, they're kind of unique,' Chief Agronomy Officer, Jorgensen Land & Cattle, Bryan Jorgensen said. The meat is coming at a critical time for Feeding South Dakota. 'Recently with the $500 million in CCC funding cuts, we have lost 11 loads of USDA food. And in those boxes would have been beef. And so right now, more than ever, these all-beef hot dogs are going to make a huge difference,' CEO of Feeding South Dakota, Lori Dykstra said. 'The timeliness of the donation was not planned, but it really serves as a very unique opportunity and a blessing. In a time where they are on a little bit of a shortfall, for federal funding. This donation shows up just in time,' Eichler said. Giving a helping hand to those in need, in a time of uncertainty. 'These hot dogs are going to end up in boxes and in our partners across all 66 counties in the state, and the 168,000 hotdogs make up 17,500 meals for families in need,' Dykstra said. May is National Beef Month, and Feeding South Dakota said this large donation is a great way to kick off the month. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved.
