Iconic KCK burger drive-in reopens under new ownership
KANSAS CITY, Kan. — A historic burger joint is back open in Kansas City, Kansas' Armoudale neighborhood after closing during the pandemic. Paul's Jr. Drive-in is under new ownership but still serves the same menu. It's grand opening was last week but people decided to wait out the long line Wednesday on National Burger Day. Storm chaser shares memories of 2019 Linwood tornado 'I came down here the other day, and the line was way back there, and now it's National Burger Day , so I'm going to go try it out,' said customer Vaughn Taylor. It's got a slightly different name, but the establishment still holds the same memories. 'My mom used to bring us down here. She's no longer here, but it's one of her favorite spots,' Taylor said. 'I came down with my parents when we were kids at that time we had to share a basket,' customer Frances Ferguson said. '[Now] I got the adult money, they're going to share a basket this time.' Stories customers get to relive again, thanks to Daniel Macias, the new owner. 'I grew up with the original owners, they were friends of the family, so I used to go to the back door and help them out,' he said. He knows the original owners, Harry and Mary Smith, would be proud. Harry died several years ago, Mary died last week. 'I wanted her to be here to make the grand opening and unfortunately she wasn't able to but she was able to see the videos from the week before when we did our soft opening and that was just as crazy,' Macias said. After waiting years to see if it'll reopen, waiting in these lines for a bite, customers say it's worth it to support a staple in the community. 'I had my nephew come down and he stood in line for four hours, he stood in line for four hours,' Ferguson said. While there are some small changes, Macias said the menu is the same. BJ's Restaurant and Brewhouse is offering a bundle deal for their classic cheeseburger. Those deals begin at $45 and includes four cheeseburgers, shredded lettuce, tomatoes, pickles, salad and chips or fries. The restaurant will also offer a burger and 'Pizookie' meal deal for $13. This meal includes a cheeseburger, lettuce, tomatoes, dill pickles, burger sauce, fries and a personal Pizookie. If you're in the mood to eat a burger from a restaurant known for its chicken wings, Buffalo Wild Wings is offering a deal that'll provide you one for half the usual price. This applies for takeout and delivery orders. Just use the code 'GOBURGER.' A more traditional choice for burger enthusiasts, the home of the Whopper is offering a free hamburger with a $1 purchase. The offer can only be used once and caps off a week of deals. Dairy Queen will offer its Stackburger for 99 cents if you purchase one at regular price. This deal ends June 1. The retail company is providing a digital coupon which will net customers a six pack of 'Private Selection Angus Beef Chuck Patties' for $6.99. The coupon can be downloaded via the app and redeemed there or in-store. Red Robin has been hosting a sweepstakes that will earn the winners a year's worth of burgers. Rewards members are automatically entered throughout the month of May. Single burgers today will cost $5.28, and that's valid for in-store, online and app purchases. Use code 'JUST528.' Beginning today and until June 1, Wendy's will be offering registered app users a Jr. Bacon Cheeseburger for 1 cent alongside any purchase. They made mincemeat out of the competition. In honor of National Hamburger Day on May 28, Yelp has ranked the top 25 fast-food burger chains in the US — with In-N-Out snagging the top spot. They reportedly based this meat-centric Mount Rushmore on Yelp reviews for companies with over 100 branches spanning multiple states, primarily categorized under 'burgers' on the site. 6 Yelp compiled the list in honor of National Burger Day. Mat Hayward – 'From nationwide favorites to iconic staples and emerging brands, the best burger joints are building fan bases by flipping great patties,' they wrote. Without further ado, here are Yelpers' votes for the best burger spots in America. In-N-Out 6 Started in 1948, In-N-Out's offerings have changed little over the years with its Double-Double — a burger with double meat and double cheese — consistently ranking as a fan-favorite. Mustard Assets – In a move that's sure to ignite beef between regional ground meat die-hards, California's In-N-Out was named the best purveyor of beef pucks between two buns. The Golden State burger chain boasts over 119,000 Yelp reviews across more than 400 locations, with most patrons claiming they're generally satisfied.
