Moroccan citrus industry gathers in Marrakech for pioneering National Congress

Faced with mounting challenges—climate change, water stress, rising costs, labor shortages, and international competition—stakeholders in Morocco's citrus industry are joining forces to shape the future of the sector. From May 13 to 15, 2025, Marrakech will host the first-ever National Citrus Congress, initiated by the interprofessional group Maroc Citrus under the aegis of the Ministry of Agriculture. The goal: to make this event a strategic turning point for the industry. Producers, exporters, professionals, researchers, and institutional representatives will come together to exchange ideas, share practical solutions, and develop a common roadmap for the sector. A key highlight will be the exclusive unveiling of the results of a nationwide census and mapping of Moroccan citrus orchards—an in-depth study led by Maroc Citrus that will serve as a critical foundation for future decision-making. On May 13, strategic panels will address the sector's most pressing issues: revitalization, disease management, water resources, climate impacts, and agricultural technologies. The following two days will feature more than 20 presentations of applied research, along with discussions and actionable recommendations. The congress aims to be a platform for dialogue, a scientific forum, and a catalyst for collective action. It speaks to every link in the citrus value chain and seeks to breathe new life into one of the pillars of Moroccan agriculture.
