Specially trained nurses now caring for sexual assault victims in Baldwin County
MALBIS, Ala. (WKRG) — They are called SANE nurses, 'Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner – specialized trained nurses who take care of patients who are coming with a sexual assault.' George County Sheriff's Office to hold National DEA Drug Takeback event In the last two months, eight patients have been seen by these specially trained nurses, caring for their medical needs and collecting evidence that may or may not be used to prosecute the offender. Marcina Doze is the SANE Coordinator at Thomas Hospital Emergency Department in Malbis. 'You want somebody who is trained in how to collect a kit, how to take care and interact with these patients and how to get them the resources they need to go forward after this.' DNA, fibers, photos, and even statements made during that initial medical visit can make all the difference if the case ends up in court. 'In a sexual assault, you have to convince the jury it even happened and then convince them of who did it,' Assistant District Attorney Kristi Hagood prosecutes sexual assault cases in Baldwin County. 'If the evidence isn't collected usually within 72 hours then there may be no evidence to collect and so not having that makes a huge difference.' In the past, traumatized victims had to travel from Baldwin County to Mobile or Pensacola for this specialized care. University of South Alabama alumna named NOAA's acting administrator 'You know, sitting someplace else for that tends to say I don't care and we do care; that is what we are here for,' said Doze. There are now six certified SANE nurses at Thomas Hospital. More are being trained and eventually, it will be the nurses that are traveling to the victim, not the other way around.
