May rain caused 35cr farm loss in Nashik
Nashik: Over 35,000 farmers across 1,469 villages in Nashik district have reported crop losses covering 12,156 hectares, resulting in a combined estimated loss of Rs35 crore due to unseasonal rain in May. According to a senior officer from the district administration, a report was prepared based National Disaster Response Funds (NDRF) guidelines and the estimated damage was sent to state govt for further action. "A total of 35,757 farmers were affected due to unseasonal rain that wreaked havoc in Nashik district. The worst-hit talukas were Surgana, followed by Peth, Satana, Dindori, and others. The loss of crops that were damaged by 33 % or more was estimated at Rs 35 crore," said the officer. Among horticultural crops, 21,084 farmers from 957 villages suffered losses on 9,494 hectares, with a total loss of Rs25.6 crore. In Satana, 3,719 farmers in 145 villages lost crops over 3,069 hectares (including 3,042 hectares of onions and 27 hectares of other crops), resulting in a loss of Rs8.3 crore. Igatpuri reported damage across 1,087 hectares (169 hectares of onions and 918 hectares of other crops), affecting 2,919 farmers in 100 villages, with an estimated loss of Rs2.9 crore. In Niphad, 1,968 farmers from 110 villages lost crops across 964 hectares (636 hectares of onions and 328 hectares of other crops), with total losses of Rs2.6 crore. Farmers cultivating multi-year crops like mango and pomegranates also suffered major losses. Peth taluka saw losses of Rs3.5 crore, with 5,391 farmers from 138 villages reporting damage to 975 hectares of mango crops. Overall, 2,442 hectares of mango and 220 hectares of other multi-year crops were affected. The officer said as per recommendations of NDRF farmers will get compensation at the rate of Rs 27,000 per hectare for damage to horticulture crops and Rs 36,000 per hectare for multi-year crops.

Oppn criticises Union agri minister over no compensation announcement to rain-affected farmers in Maharashtra
Pune: A day after Union agriculture minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan visited Pune city, the opposition criticised him, claiming that the minister made several announcements but did not announce any compensation for the farmers of the state who faced losses due to recent heavy rain. The state witnessed unusually heavy rain in May, causing damage to crops like onion, bananas and vegetables. While the state govt has assured help to the distressed farmers, members of the opposition said since the Union agriculture minister was in the state, he should have announced some aid. "The agriculture minister spoke about using technology to improve production and to give clean saplings to farmers. We are not against the use of technology in agriculture, but at the moment, the priority should have been announcing immediate compensation to farmers who incurred huge losses due to heavy rain," Raju Shetti, founder of the Swabhimani Shetkari Sanghatana, said. The state govt has announced panchanama of all farms that suffered damages due to the heavy rain. The opposition members, however, said the process of evaluation of damage should finish fast, and the govt should start providing actual compensation. "We have not witnessed such heavy rain in May.
