Rescue a pup on National Dog Rescue Day
SHREVEPORT, La. (KTAL/KMSS)- May 20th marks National Dog Rescue Day, and Caddo Parish Animal Services is using the day to spotlight the importance of adopting rescue pets and to introduce one very special pup named Natasha. Kim Freeman with Caddo Parish Animal Services shares Natasha's story. Natasha and her brother Boris arrived at the shelter about six weeks ago as strays and are both still looking for loving homes. 'National Dog Rescue Day is a great time to come out and adopt,' Freeman said. 'You're not just changing one animal's life you're also opening up space in the shelter for another pet in need.' Freeman also addressed common misconceptions about adopting rescue animals. 'People worry about not knowing an animal's history, but what we see most are incredibly grateful pets who give so much love in return,' she said. All pets adopted from Caddo Parish Animal Services are spayed or neutered, vaccinated, and microchipped before going to their new homes. Natasha is fully vetted and ready to be adopted for just $50. Those interested in Natasha, Boris, or any of the shelter's other animals are encouraged to visit the facility and meet their potential new family member. ‘Code Red': Andrews Animal Shelter reaches capacity on National Rescue a Dog Day
ANDREWS, Texas (KMID/KPEJ)- The City of Andrews Animal Shelter was in 'Code Red' on National Rescue a Dog Day because it is was full capacity and did not have room to shelter more dogs. 'It's hard, Code Red is, I mean, I hate even using the term because it's emotional for a lot of people. But we need to get the awareness out there that way,' Sara Brus, Animal Services Supervisor said. 'We have animals that are at risk of not making it, and animals that would otherwise be great family pets. The only reason they would be put to sleep is simply because we don't have the space, and especially on National Dog Rescue Day, where we celebrate and encourage animal shelter adoptions. It's really hard to have those two days coincide.' National Dog Rescue Day is to bring awareness to the public and to encourage the community to adopt a pet. Shelter Staff said, bringing more awareness would help bring in more families looking to adopt a new best friend. 'As far as private adoption, if someone has been thinking about it and considering it, that kind of code red, and with it being National Dog Adoption Day,' Brus said. 'People will go 'you know what let's do it'. Now is the time to take a look at what they have. It definitely brings more people in.' While being under a code red, the shelter began reaching out to recues in the area to help them carry the load. 'We work with quite a few in the area. We work really closely with Midland Humane Coalition, and so we can reach out to them, and they will say 'hey we have this many space for this many dogs' and they will come and look,' Brus said. 'I am in contact with a few recues right now that are looking to see what they can do.' The animal shelter said it plans to break ground on June 2nd to add a new adoption center that will have 19 large dog kennels, nine small dog kennels, and nine cat kennels in addition to the existing shelter. This shelter will add more space to care for more dogs. But adding space isn't enough. Brus said one way the community can help with the dog problem in West Texas is to have their dogs spayed and neutered. On a lighter note, eight lucky pets were been adopted Tuesday. A perfect storm of post-lockdown overbreeding, rising living costs, and plummeting adoption rates has left rescue centres at capacity and struggling to cope with the number of dogs in need. According to the RSPCA the number of dogs needing help now far exceeds the space available. The charity recorded 48,814 neglect reports in 2024, a 25% year-on-year rise, and has seen adoption rates fall by nearly a third since 2019.* Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad Behind these numbers is a darker reality. Under UK law, unclaimed stray dogs can be euthanised after just seven days. With shelters full and no official records kept, many fear a hidden crisis — with huge numbers of healthy, adoptable dogs quietly being put down in council pounds each year. Will Young Miraculous Meals offers a new way to help — with 50% of profits donated to rescue centres like Birmingham Dogs Home, Hope Rescue and many more, every meal helps give dogs in need across the UK the second chance at life they deserve. Will's voice helps spotlight a crisis too often overlooked and his role as Co-Founder ensures the brand's impact grows even further, reaching more dog owners and funding more life-saving rescue work across the UK. The announcement of Will's new position at Miraculous Meals coincides with National Dog Rescue Day. To mark the occasion, he's calling on dog owners to join him and make their everyday purchases make a real difference for dogs in need. So many people want to do more to help, but don't know where to start. That's why Miraculous Meals is so special. With 50% of profits going to rescue centres, we're giving people a simple way to make a real difference.' Will Young Will joins Miraculous Meals' existing Co-Founders, Ed Pellew and Matt Judkins, on their mission to solve the UK's dog rescue crisis. Ed Pellew and Matt Judkins, Miraculous Meals' Co-Founders, added: 'Will has been a passionate voice for rescue dogs for years, so having him join as Co-Founder feels like the perfect match. With Will by our side, we can reach more people, support more rescue centres, and help ensure every adoptable dog gets the second chance at life they deserve.' Miraculous Meals launched 18 months ago and has already made over £50,000 of donations to dog rescue centres, and with Will Young's support the brand aims to donate £4 million over the next 5 years to help tackle the dog rescue crisis in the UK. Rescue centres are beyond capacity, and the number of dogs needing help keeps rising, leaving teams to make impossible choices no one should have to face. That's why we're so grateful for the support of Miraculous Meals. And now, with Will Young joining as Co-Founder, they're not just backing rescue work, they're helping bring national attention to a crisis that's too often ignored.'
