The first week in March is 'National Invest in Veteran's Week'– how one local veteran makes a difference
AUGUSTA, Ga. (WJBF) – The first week in March marks 'National Invest in Veterans Week.' Right here in the CSRA, there are many organizations working to help our Veterans.
Helping bridge gaps between life in service and life after– it's the mission of America's Warrior Partnership through the vision of one local veteran, Jim Lorraine.
'At the end of 2024, we had connected to over 9,000 veterans. We had served them and connected them to resources that improve their quality of life…' Lorriane said.
It's all made possible through his nonprofit organization called America's Warrior Partnership, founded right here in Augusta.
'We get to know who the veteran's are on one hand, and we know where the resources are on the other, and we connect the two. When it comes to National Invest in Veterans Week, one of our resources that we connect to are programs that help veterans start their own businesses– whether it's through a franchise, or independently, they teach them how to do it… '
Lorraine served 22 years as a United States Air Force combat nurse. After service he found navigating civilian life and connecting with benefits and resources a bit challenging.
'Housing, employment, education, entrepreneurship, relationships, spiritual, etc. If we can bring all those resources to a veteran, and improve their quality of life, the likelihood of them taking their life drops.'
Now, Lorriane's work through the AWP nonprofit makes it so no other veteran has to worry.
'Last year, we screened about 2,500 high-risk veterans for any thoughts about taking their own life. What we had was about 18% of those we screened, did have ideations within 30 days of our phone call. We maintained contact with those veterans, stayed connected with 'em and then as of today, we haven't had anyone call us to say– they're all doing well.'
If you're a veteran in the CSRA, or beyond, Lorraine and the America's Warrior Partnership wants to connect with you to help find you resources. For information on how visit here.
